  • This paper presents a new DR(Dead Reckoning) algorithm in client-server-based networked virtual environment using network delay estimation. In the algorithm, a new update packet is sent to server (or client) whenever the difference of current real value and tracking value after network delay is larger than threshold. To confirm the proposed algorithm, a test network game was implemented. Through iterative field tests, we knew that this algorithm provides fair service and stability.

  • This paper proposes a current differential relaying algorithm for power transformers using the third difference function of a differential current. The algorithm observes the instants when the wave-shape of the differential current is changed due to the change of the magnetization inductance. If the value of the third difference is bigger than the threshold, the output of a current differential relay is blocked for a cycle. In the cases of magnetic inrush and overexcitation, the blocking signal is maintained: however, for internal faults, reset in a cycle. The test results clearly show that the algorithm successfully distinguishes internal faults from magnetizing inrush.

  • Main objectives of this study were to investigate accuracy, bias and power of linear and threshold model segregation analysis methods for detection of major genes in categorical traits in farm animals. Maximum Likelihood Linear Model (MLLM), Bayesian Linear Model (BALM) and Bayesian Threshold Model (BATM) were applied to simulated data on normal, categorical and binary scales as well as to disease data in pigs. Simulated data on the underlying normally distributed liability (NDL) were used to create categorical and binary data. MLLM method was applied to data on all scales (Normal, categorical and binary) and BATM method was developed and applied only to binary data. The MLLM analyses underestimated parameters for binary as well as categorical traits compared to normal traits; with the bias being very severe for binary traits. The accuracy of major gene and polygene parameter estimates was also very low for binary data compared with those for categorical data; the later gave results similar to normal data. When disease incidence (on binary scale) is close to 50%, segregation analysis has more accuracy and lesser bias, compared to diseases with rare incidences. NDL data were always better than categorical data. Under the MLLM method, the test statistics for categorical and binary data were consistently unusually very high (while the opposite is expected due to loss of information in categorical data), indicating high false discovery rates of major genes if linear models are applied to categorical traits. With Bayesian segregation analysis, 95% highest probability density regions of major gene variances were checked if they included the value of zero (boundary parameter); by nature of this difference between likelihood and Bayesian approaches, the Bayesian methods are likely to be more reliable for categorical data. The BATM segregation analysis of binary data also showed a significant advantage over MLLM in terms of higher accuracy. Based on the results, threshold models are recommended when the trait distributions are discontinuous. Further, segregation analysis could be used in an initial scan of the data for evidence of major genes before embarking on molecular genome mapping.

  • Purpose: In this study, the effects of stability exercise, extracorporeal shock wave therapy, and taping on pain and function in patients with myofascial pain syndrome of upper trapezius were compared. Methods: The subjects were divided into the stability exercise, ESWT and the taping treatment group and the clinical outcomes were evaluated by visual analog scale (VAS), pressure pain threshold (PPT) and a constant-murley scale (CMS) at pre-treatment and post-treatment. Paired t-test and ANOVA was used for statistical analysis. Results: All groups were statistical significance in the change in visual analog scale (p<0.05). The difference between the ESWT group and taping group was statistical significance in the change in pressure pain threshold (p<0.05) except for the taping group. Using the constant-murley scale, the stability exercise group showed a significant decrease in pain, and a significant increase in ROM, ADL, strength, total score of shoulder (p<0.05); however, the ESWT group showed no difference on ADL. In addition, there was no difference in strength for the taping group. The comparison of the effect between the stability exercise group, ESWT group and taping group in CMS showed a statistical significant difference in pain, ADL and ROM (p<0.05). Conclusion: These results indicate that stability exercise, ESWT and taping could be considered an effective and efficient treatment modality for myofascial pain syndrome of upper trapezius.

  • This paper proposes the rate control algorithm based on the S-JND (Saliency-Just Noticeable Difference) model for considering perceptual visual quality. The proposed rate control algorithm employs the S-JND model to simultaneously reflect human visual sensitivity and human visual attention for considering characteristics of human visual system. During allocating bits for CTU (Coding Tree Unit) level in a rate control, the bit allocation model calculates the S-JND threshold of each CTU in a picture. The threshold of each CTU is used for adaptively allocating a proper number of bits; thus, the proposed bit allocation model can improve perceptual visual quality. For performance evaluation of the proposed algorithm, the proposed algorithm was implemented on HM 16.9 and tested for sequences in Class B and Class C under the CTC (Common Test Condition) RA (Random Access), Low-delay B and Low-delay P case. Experimental results show that the proposed method reduces the bit-rate of 2.3%, and improves BD-PSNR of 0.07dB and bit-rate accuracy of 0.06% on average. We achieved MOS improvement of 0.03 with the proposed method, compared with the conventional method based on DSCQS (Double Stimulus Continuous Quality Scale).

  • Objectives Despite considerable advances in technique, experience and skill, the precise place of surgery in the treatment of facial nerve injury remains uncertain. We designed a facial nerve crush injury model in rats and evaluated the recovery of crushed nerve which is the most common injury type of facial nerve using adenovirus vector mediated in vivo gene transfer of Brain derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF). Materials and methods In 48 Sprague Dawley rats, we made a facial nerve crush injury model to main trunk before the furcation, and injected a $10^{11}$pfu adenoviral BDNF in experimental group(BDNF adenoviral injection group; ad-BDNF) and $3{\mu}l$ saline in control group(Saline injection group; saline). After a period of regeneration from 10 to 40 days, nerve regeneration was evaluated with functioinal test (vibrissae and ocular movement), electrophysiologic study(threshold, peak voltage, conduction velocity) and histomorphometric study of axon density. Results Vibrissae and ocular movement, threshold and conduction velocity improved as time elapse in both group, however axon density was increased significantly only in experimental group. Functional test in 10 days and 20 days showed no difference between experimental group and control group. Vibrissae movement, threshold, conduction velocity and axon density in 30 days revealed that the regeneration in quality of experimental group was significantly superior to that of control group. Conclusion In general, there is tendency for nerve regeneration in experimental group (BDNF-adenovirus injection group) during 40 days, functional recovery was detected successfully after facial nerve crush in 30 days postoperatively.

  • The Association between myofascial pain syndrome and some tests was assessed in a cross-sectional study of 904 female telephone operators using video display terminals(VDTs). 105 cases were diagnosed as Myofascial pain syndrome with symptom questionnaire, laboratory examination and physician's physical examination and 550 controls were defined to show only musculoskeletal symptoms using NIOSH symptom criteria. Data on demographics, musculoskeletal symptom and visual analogue scale(VAS) were obtained by questionnaire. Anthropometric measurements, pressure pain threshold, Grip & Pinch strength and laboratory test were conducted. No significant difference between case and control at comparing of demographics, occupational history and body measurements were observed. But, Grip strength, pressure pain threshold and VAS showed the statistical difference between case and controt. Age, pressure pain threshold of Rt. Upper trapezius and VAS were associated with myofascial pain syndrome in multivariate logistic regression analysis. This results suggest that, to diagnose of myofascial pain syndrome, the consideration of the objective aspects among patients' subjective symptom complaints through the VAS and pressure pain threshold is required.

  • This study aimed at evaluating tile relationship between pressure pain threshold(PPT) and electromyographic(EMG) activity in 30 healthy volunteers and 30 patients with temporomandibular disorders. PPTs were determined with electric pressure algometry over masseter, temporalis anterior, sternocleidomastoid, and trapezius muscle during resting and clenching. To obtain more reliable result, two examiners measured PPTs two times on each muscles, randomly. Resting and clenching EMG activity and tenderness of all muscles were measured to evaluate the relationship with PPTs. The collected data were processed by SAS/STAT program. The obtained results were as follows : 1. Pressure pain thresholds in tendered muscles were lower than those in non-tendered muscles. This tendency was more prominant in masticatory muscles than in cervical muscles and in clenching than in resting. 2. There ware a tendency of higher PPTs in unaffected side than in affected side, but there were no significant difference statistically. 3. There wert no difference of PPTs between in preferred side and in ipsilateral side, significantly. 4. There was a significantly positive correlation between resting and clenching PPTs, but there were no correlation between PPTs and EMG activities. 5. Comparison of EMG activity between in higher group and in lower group by resting PPTs didn't show any significant difference. But resting EMG activity in the higher group of clenching PPTs were lower, on the contrary, clenching activity were higher than those in lower groups of clenching PPTs. From this results, the author concluded that the clenching PPTs was more important than resting PPTs in diagnosis of muscle dysfunction. And the author recommanded that all of three following test were performed for the proper diagnosis and treatment of orofacial Pain : muscle tenderness, EMG activity, and PPT.

  • This study aimed to investigate the difference of sensory changes by central and peripheral stimulation for improving life care in chronic low back pain patients. Twelve chronic low back pain patients were randomly assigned to central stimulation (CS, n=6) and peripheral stimulation (PS, n=6). Quantitative sensory test (QST), pressure pain threshold (PPT) and Korean oswestry back pain disability index (KODI) were used to quantitatively measure and analyze. As a result, QST, PPT and KODI showed significant differences by period (p<.01) but did not showed any difference between the two groups (p>.05). Therefore, both stimulations had significant effects on increased sensory threshold and function improvement of the muscles that became sensitive due to pain. It is thought to be significant in improving life care for patients with chronic low back pain.
