  • In order to investigate the characteristics of the effects of various emission sources such as ships around the Busan North Port area, PM2.5 samples were analyzed by SEM/EDS (scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer). In the port city Busan, the main emission source of PM2.5 is ships, and soot was observed as the main exhaust particles of a ship diesel engine. As a result of the individual particle analysis of PM2.5 at the sampling site, carbonaceous particles such as soot and water droplet-shaped, which are considered to be exhausted from ships, were constantly observed. And some spherical Fe-rich particles also appeared.

  • Real-time measurements of fine particles from stack emission gases are necessary due to the needs of continuous environmental monitoring of PM10 and PM2.5. The porous tube dilutor using hot and cold dilutions was developed to measure fine particles without condensable particles from highly humid emission gases and compared to the commercialized ejector-type dilutor. Particle size distributions were measured at the emission gases from a diesel engine and a coal-fired boiler. The porous tube dilutor could successfully measure the accumulation mode particles including relatively large particles more than $3{\mu}m$ without nuclei particles, while the ejector dilutor detected some condensable particles and could not detect large particles. The porous tube dilutor could successfully remove the already condensed water droplet particles generated by a humidifier in a $30m^3$ chamber.

  • In this study, we analyzed the structural characteristics of soot, which is one of the anticipated regulatory substances of the IMO, and used a novel classification method to distinguish between exhaust soot and engine soot in marine engines. As an extension of a recent study on exhaust soot recycling, annealing was performed at 2,000 ℃ on engine soot to determine whether it could be recycled. Soot samples before and after annealing were analyzed using HR-TEM and Raman spectroscopy. The HR-TEM results showed that exhaust soot and engine soot had similar nanostructures; the exhaust soot has a spherical primary particle with a chain-like structure, whereas engine soot particles have amorphous structures. The Raman spectroscopy showed a D-peak and a G-peak for both exhaust soot and engine soot. However, the G/D ratio indicated that the value of exhaust soot was relatively higher than that of engine soot, which implies that the exhaust soot has a more graphitized structure. The analysis of annealed engine soot confirmed that graphitization proceeded without any problems, similar to the exhaust soot. This confirmed that both exhaust soot and engine soot generated by marine diesel engines could be recycled as graphite materials.

  • In this study, 1-hour integrated $PM_{2.5}$ mass and chemical composition concentrations were monitored at the St. Louis-Midwest Supersite in Illinois. Time-resolved samples were collected one week in each of June 2001 (22 June to 28 June), November 2001 (7 November to 13 November), and March 2002 (19 March to 25 March). A total of 427 samples were collected by CAMM (continuous ambient mass monitor) and 15 compounds were analyzed by AAS, PILS (particle-into-liquid sampler), and TOT (thermal optical transmittance) method. PMF was applied to identify the sources and apportion the $PM_{2.5}$ mass to each source for highly time resolved data. In addition, the nonparametric regression (NPR) was applied to identify the predominant directions of local sources relative to wind direction. Also, this study performed compare the NPR analysis and location of actual local point sources at the St. Louis area. The PMF modeling identified nine sources and the average mass was apportioned to gasoline vehicle, road dust, zinc smelter, copper production, secondary sulfate, diesel emission, secondary nitrate, iron+steel, and lead smelter, respectively. These results suggested that this study results will be help for $PM_{2.5}$ source apportionment studies at similar metropolitan area, establish $PM_{2.5}$ standard, and establish effective emissions reduction strategies in Korea.

  • Vehicles, especially diesel-using, are a major source of airborne particulate matter(PM), nitrogen dioxide($NO_2$) and so on in metropolitan cities such as Seoul. Therefore workers, who are mainly merchants, near roadside may be highly exposed to air pollutants from exhausted emissions of vehicles. This means that occupational type and location can affect the workers'health by exposure to outdoor pollutions of ambient as well as indoor pollutions of working condition, respectively. In this study, we simultaneously measured the PM3.5 and $NO_2$concentrations in indoor and outdoor of shoes repair shops in Seoul, which were generally located at roadside in Korea. Shoes repairmen were highly exposed to PM3.5 and $NO_2$ both indoor and outdoor of repair shops comparing with other sub-population groups. High exposure to air pollutants for shoes repairmen was considered to be outdoor source from exhausted emission of vehicles and indoor source from working condition. The $PM3.5/NO_2$ concentration ratio was $1.17{\pm}$0.59 in roadside, of which ratio was higher 7han ratios of other studies. This result suggested that major air pollutant in Seoul was fine particle. Also, this PM3.5 to $NO_2$ ratio will be used in environmental exposure and risk assessment by estimation of PM3.5 concentration as measuring the only $NO_2$ concentration with small and accurate $NO_2$ passive sampler.

  • Vehicle occupant exposure to air pollutants has been a subject of concern in recent years because of higher levels of air pollutants inside gasoline or diesel-using vehicle, comparing to the surrounding atmosphere. Contrary to previous studies, fuel of vehicles operated in this study was liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). This study examined the potential exposure and removal efficiency of selected volatile organic compounds (VOCs), nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$) and respirable suspended particle (RSP) by commercial air cleaning device inside vehicle under different ventilation conditions. Vehicle concentrations inside of benzene, toluene, m,p-xylene, $NO_2$ and RSP were lower under the low ventilation condition. This was indicated that outdoor air pollutants could affect the vehicle air quality inside in case metropolitan cities such as Daegu. The urban vehicle concentrations inside of benzene, toluene, m,p-xylene, $NO_2$ and RSP with air cleaning device were higher than those without air cleaning device. This means that the use of air cleaning device equipped with activated carbon filter, which was used in this study, in the interior of vehicles could be expected to reduce the vehicle occupants exposure to air pollutants effectively. In batch type reactor of laboratory scale, removal efficiencies of air cleaning device used were $97.0\%,\;95.7\%,\;94.6\%\;and\;85.5\%$ respectively in benzene, toluene, m,p-xylene and $NO_2$.

  • The heavy metal of suspended particulates with human health has long been studied in environmental interest concerned. This study was intended to identify harmful heavy metals of the ambient air borne dusts which were related with the respirable sizes in the aerodynamics. Two sampling sites were selected comparatively; one was in the Shinchon area, which is the commercial district with heavy traffic and the other site was in the Bulgwang area which is residential area. The supended particulates were sampled by high volume air sample with 6 cascade impactor stages. The heavy metals in terms of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, V and Zn were determined by stomic absorption spectrometry or inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry. The samples weretaken bimothly for seven consecutive days from May 1987 to March 1988. The annual average concentration of the respirable suspended dust of which diameter is less than 10$\mum$ was 152.59 $\mug/m^3$ of the Shinchon air samples; the respirable dust was equivalent to approximately 85% of the total suspended particulates. The annual average concentration of the respirable suspended dust of the Bulgwang air samples was 112.56 $\mug/m^3$; that was approximately 86% of the total suspended particulates. The concentration of heavy metals was investigated in relation to the particle size. The concentration of Cr, Fe, Mn and V were tended to be much more in the coarse particles than in the fine particles. Cd and Pb in the fine particles were more than in the coarse particles. In the partial correlation coefficients; in the Shinchon area, high correlations among Fe, Se and Mn were determined; it is assumed that those sources would be originated from coal, gasolineand diesel. In Bulgwang area, would be high correlation among Fe, Se, Hg and Mn considered to be originated from coal, Bunker-C and heavy oil as well. From the above results, the hazardous heavy merals in air should be measured and controlled in originally their sources.

  • DME(Di-Methyl Ehter, $CH_3OCH$) is currently attracting worldwide attention due to its environmentally friendly characteristics. Until now it was researched as a major alternative fuel of diesel automobile because it is a clean fuel producing low soot. Therefore, in this study, in order to investigate the effect of DME mixing on number density and size of soot particle, DME has been mixed in opposed-flow ethylene diffusion flame with the mixture ratios 5%, 14% and 30%. A laser extinction/scattering technique has been adopted to measure the volume fraction, number density, and size of soot particles. The experimental results showed that the soot concentration of mixture flames with the mixture ratios 5% and 14% produces soot more, even though that of 30% was decreased. This means that even though DME has been known to be a clean fuel for soot formation, the mixing of DME in diffusion flame of ethylene, where acetylene maintains high concentration in soot formation regions, could produce enhanced production of soot.

  • In order to ruduce traffic-jam, it is requested to extend road. As a result, the construction of tunnels is inevitable considering our mountatinous topography. In tunnel construction work, major contamination materials occur from rock drilling, blasting rock, rock transporting, and short-creat. After rock blasting, a very high concentration of particles over $5000{\mu}g/m^3$ is maintained for 4 h when air is supplied by pans, by which the construction work has to be delayed at least 30 min. Although dry dust collectors are used, the effective operation time span is limited to 3 h. In this work, the behavior of particles in air and use of particle removal instruments are investigated. As a result, it was important to compare efficiencies of dry and hydro dust collectors.

  • In this study, the purposes are investigating and analyzing car emission factors for estimating road emissions and the legal framework for the control of particulate matters. At the result, when input emission data are not realistic, the modeling output concentration distributions can lead to a serious distortion of the results. So, the spatial analysis of the dust emission vehicles have to be based on the actual traffic volumes. Because dust emission factors used in the car by National Institute of Environmental Research Method (2010) are mainly targeted for 2003-2007 cars these could not reflect the effect of DPF and the dust emission of gasoline passenger car. So, the real dust emission factors of diesel and gasoline cars need to be developed.
