Improvements of fuel properties have become essential for exhaust emission reduction as well as for optimization of directly-related design factors and exhaust gas aftertreatment. In this study, the potential possibility of oxygenated fuel such as ethylene glycol mono-n-butyl ether(EGBE) was investigated for the sake of smoke reduction from diesel engine. Because EGBE include oxygen content approximately 27%, it is a kind of effective oxygenated fuel that the smoke emission of EGBE is reduced remarkably in comparison with commercial diesel fuel, that is, it can supply oxygen component sufficient at high load and speed in diesel engine. And, it was tried to analyze the quantities of the low and high boiling point hydrocarbon among the exhaust emissions in diesel engine. It have been investigated by the quantitative analysis of the hydrocarbon $C_1$~ $C_{6}$ using the gas chromatography. This study was carried out by comparing the chromatogram with diesel fuel and diesel fuel blended EGBE 20vo1-%. The results of this study show that the hydrocarbon $C_1$~C$_{6}$ among the exhaust emission of the mixed fuels are exhausted lower than those of the diesel fuel at the all load and speed. In particular, high boiling point hydrocarbons such as $C_{5}$ and $C_{6}$ were reduced remarkably at high speed and load.d.
This paper describes the experimental investigations on the pressure variations of intake and exhaust manifold and mass flow rate through exhaust turbine of turbocharged 6-cylinder diesel engine. The turbocharger of experimental diesel engine is constructed with the radial ty pe exhaust turbine and blower driven by exhaust gases. The pressure variations were measur ed by pressure transducer at the points such as turbine inlet and outlet, compressor inlet and outlet, and inlet pipe and exhaust manifolds for normal and combined charging engines with the change of engine speed. The experimental results of this study show that the mass flow rate of exhaust turbine and the variations of pressure in intake and exhaust manifold are all increased with the increase of engine speed.
The People have a bad perception about diesel vehicle because of serious air pollution, increase fine dust and global vehicle company's diesel gate. Starting the project in 2005, Ministry of Environment has been supporting that is exhaust gas reduction devices (DPF) on diesel vehicles in the metropolitan area. During the period of 2017.01.01 to 2017.12.31, 10,030 diesel vehicles installed exhaust gas reduction devices (DPF). Among them, 9,921 diesel vehicles that they have sufficient data for analysis were analyzed amount of particulate matter reduction before and after exhaust gas reduction devices (DPF) was installed. Opacity smoke meter measures the concentration of particulate matter. So concentration of particulate matter was converted into a mass unit, and then calculated the total amount of reduced particulate matter. It was estimated that social benefits is costs required to remove it from the total amount of particulate matter.
This study is to investigate the effect of the distillation temperature in ultra low sulfur diesel fuel on exhaust emissions in the low-temperature diesel combustion with 1.9L common rail direct injection diesel engine. Low temperature diesel combustion was achieved by adopting an external high EGR rate with a strategic injection control. The engine was operated at 1500 rpm 2.6 bar BMEP. The 90% distillation recovery temperature (T90) was $270^{\circ}C$ and $340^{\circ}C$ for the respective cetane number (CN) 30 and 55. It was found that there exists no distinctive discrepancy on exhaust emissions with regards to the different T90s. The high CN (CN55) fuels follow the similar trend of exhaust emissions as observed in CN30 fuels' except that high T90 fuel (CN55-T340) produced higher PM compared to low T90 fuel (CN55-T270). This may come from that high T90 plays an active role in aggravating the degree of fuel-air mixture preparedness before ignition.
Interest in the studies of diesel exhaust emission has been increasing by the expected increase in the use of diesel powered automobiles out of concideration of fuel economy. It was well known that diesel exhaust emission was mutagenic in the bioassay as Ames test. The authors tried to find out the cytogenetic effect of diesel exhaust emission by the operational condition of engine such as speed and load. For the investigation of those effects, 66 male mice of ICR strain were used. The benzene-ethanol extracts of diesel exhaust emission were injected intra peritoneum 25rng/kg and 50mg/kg respectively. To evaluate the cytogenetic effect, mouse bone marrow micronucleus test was carried out. The frequency of micronucleus was different among the various groups according to the operational conditions of engine. The frequency of micronucleus in idling group was the highest of all the groups the subgroup of 50mg/kg showed the rate of 1.30%, 25rng/kg subgroup 0.55%. And the group of 2000rpm with 50% load showed the lowest rate of micronucleus appearance as 0.20% and 0.15%. In general, the frequency of micronucleus was shown higher in propotion to load and was shown inversely proportional to speed.
Recently, the world is faced with very serious problems related to the air pollution due to the exhaust emissions of the diesel engine. So, many of researchers have studied to reduce the exhaust emissions of diesel engine. This study was investigated for various exhaust emissions according to operating conditions in a turbocharged D.I. diesel engine. As a result of experiments in a test engine, the $CO_2\;and\;NO_x$ increased with increasing load, the $CO_2$ and CO decreased with increasing charge air pressure in manifold, the CO decreased with increasing cooling fresh water temperature, and the $NO_x$ decreased with worming cooling fresh water before engine start.
In this study, the effects of variation in cam phasing and valve lift of exhaust valves by using Cam-in-Cam system on combustion and emission characteristics for diesel engine were investigated under GT-POWER simulation environment. This paper showed analytic result of combustion characteristics and diesel exhaust valve's control with GT-Power 1-D detail model. As a result, it was found that volumetric efficiency and IMEP were decreased as the exhaust valve opening and closing timing is advanced due to its internal EGR effects. Also, it was found that NOx emission were decreased as EVC timing was retarded. These show that the retarding the exhaust valve closing and opening while keeping the duration at constant can be effective for controlling AFR and mixing rate in diffusion combustion of diesel engine.
This paper is based on experiments conducted on a stationary, four stroke, naturally aspirated air cooled, single cylinder compression ignition engine coupled with an electrical swinging field dynamometer. Instead of 100% diesel, 20% Jatropha oil methyl ester with 80% diesel blend was injected directly in engine beside 25% pre-mixed charge of diesel in mixing chamber and with 20% exhaust gas recirculation. The performance and emission characteristics are compared with conventional 100% diesel injection in main chamber. The blend with diesel premixed charge with and without exhaust gas recirculation yields in reduction of oxides of nitrogen and particulate matter. Adverse effects are reduction of brake thermal efficiency, increase of unburnt hydrocarbons (UBHC), carbon monoxide (CO) and specific energy consumption. UBHC and CO emissions are higher with Diesel Premixed Combustion Ignition (DPMCI) mode compared to compression ignition direct injection (CIDI) mode. Percentage increases in UBHC and CO emissions are 27% and 23.86%, respectively compared to CIDI mode. Oxides of nitrogen ($NO_x$) and soot emissions are lower and the percentage decrease with DPMCI mode are 32% and 33.73%, respectively compared to CIDI mode.
Particulate matter produced by diesel engines is of concern to cngine manufactures because of its environmental impact. The majority of diesel particles are in the range of smaller than 1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Because of their tiny volume, ultrafine diesel particles contribute very little to the total mass concentration which is currently regulated for automobile emissions. Ultrafinc particles are known to have deleterious effects upon human health cspecially because they penetrate deeply human respiratory tract and have negative effects on the health. In this study, the engine exhaust gas was diluted in a dilution tunnel and the particle size distribution was measured using the scanning mobility particel sizer system. Measurements of the number and the mass concentrations of the diesel exhaust were made under different engine ooperating conditions. The dilution sampling system provided a common basis for collection of the exhaust by cooling and diluting the source emission prior to the measurement. The measurement results showed that the particle size distributions of the exhaust from the diesel vehicles equipment with either heavy-duty or lignt-duty diesel engines, were similar in the particle size range of 0.08~0.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.
The purpose of this study os to investigate how the natural gas in fuel blend influences the polutant emission of diesel engine. Four stroke cycle single cylinder engine is used for this experiment and four kind of fuel blends were made. Fuel blends show four different torque ratios between diesel oil and natural gas, which are 4 : 0. 3 : 1, 2 : 2 and 1 : 3. The constituents of exhaust gases of engine are analyzed for every fuel blend. The experimental results say that the mixing of natural gas into diesel fuel is an very effective way to reduce the amount of soot in the exhaust gas.
