  • A new type of a Rotman lens is presented in this paper fur millimeter-wave applications, such as collision avoidance radar. A dielectric slab Rotman lens is proposed to reduce the conductor loss and to create an appropriate farm for favorable implementation at millimeter-wave frequency. The proposed lens consists of a dielectric slab and slot lines whereas the conventional lenses are constructed with parallel conducting plates. The dielectric slab Rotman lens excited in TE$\_$0/ mode shows a high degree of confinement for the fields, low dispersion, and has an appropriate feed structure. A prototype lens has been designed and fabricated with 9 beam ports and 9 array ports together with 9 tapered slot antennas. This lens has been tested in the range from 10 GHz to 15 GHz and the measured beam widths are about 15$^{\circ}$ at 13 GHz. The measurements also show low mutual coupling between beam ports and an efficiency of about 34.6 %. The overall performance is comparable to that of conventional Rotman lenses even though the prototype was tested at lower than desired frequencies in the microwave frequency range due to our limited resources for fabrications and measurements. It is expected that at millimeter-wave frequency the dielectric slab Rotman lens will have lower conductor loss and lower mutual coupling than conventional Rotman lenses.an lenses.

  • In this study, a binary dielectric annular nanoring lens is proposed to cover the full range of optical phase. The lens is designed numerically, based on the effective-medium theory. The performance of the proposed lens is verified for the cases of single-focal and dual-focal lenses. The efficiency of a single-focal lens is improved by 17.19% compared to a binary dielectric lens, and that of a dual-focal lens shows enhancements of 13.11% and 49.41% at the two focal points. This lens design can be applied to other optical components with axially symmetric structures.

  • This paper presents the effects of a dielectric layer and an electrolyte on the driving performance of an electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD)-based liquid lens. The range of tunable focal length of the EWOD-based liquid lens was highly dependent on the conditions of the dielectric layer, which included an inorganic oxide layer and an organic hydrophobic layer. Moreover, experiments on the physical and optical durability of electrolyte by varying temperature conditions, were conducted and their results were discussed. Finally, the lens with a truncated-pyramid silicon cavity having a sidewall dielectrics and electrode was fabricated by anisotropic etching and other micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) technologies in order to demonstrate its performance. The lens with $0.6-{\mu}m$-thick $SiO_2$ layer and 10 wt% LiCl-electrolyte exhibited brilliant focal-length tunability from infinity to 3.19 mm.

  • In this paper, nonradiative dielectric(NRD) rotman lens with a gap-coupled unidirectional dielectric radiator(UDR) has been designed. Gap-coupled UDR is structurally suitable for NRD rotman lens. We have optimized NRD rotman lens for minimizing side-lobe, and calculated design parameters of UDR such as length of resonator and distance of gap using an equivalent circuit model of an evanescent NRD guide. Experimental prototype of UDR is fabricated and measured at the center frequency of 38 GHz. The simulated S-parameter and far-field radiation beam pattern of UDR show good agreements with measured data. Finally, total beam pattern of NRD rotman lens of multi-beam feed has been obtained using a measured pattern of UDR and array factor of NRD rotman lens. The obtained beam pattern shows remarkably suppressed side-lobe.

  • In the conventional AF lens actuating system the VCM actuator is used. However due to the actuating mechanism, the VCM actuator has disadvantage in miniaturizing which is essential to the actuator for the mobile device. Therefore novel type actuator is required and the one of the candidate is actuator using electoractive polymer (EAP). The EAP actuator is one of the attractive smart materials that is light and can be easily fabricated with low cost. This paper proposes an AF lens actuator for mobile phone using dielectric elastomer. The proposed actuator was designed and analyzed using finite element method. The designed actuator is verified by experiment and the position control algorithm is applied.

  • In this paper, we review papers which report to the all solid-state electroactive polymer-based tunable lens. Since electroactive polymer-based tunable lenses change their focal length by responding to electric stimuli, it can be minimized the size and weight of optical modules. Thus, it has been received attention in the robot, mobile device and display industry. The all solid-state electroactive polymer-based tunable lenses can be classified into two categories depending on the classification of materials: ionic electroactive polymer-based lenses and non-ionic electroactive polymer-based lenses. Most of the ionic electroactive polymer-based tunable lenses are fabricated with ionic polymer-metal composite. So, the ionic electroactive polymer-based tunable lenses can be operated under low electric voltage. But small force, slow recovery time and environmental limitation for operation has been pointed to the disadvantage of the lenses. The non-ionic electroactive polymer-based tunable lenses are classified again into two categories: dielectric polymer-based tunable lenses and polyvinylchloride gel-based tunable lenses. The advantage of the dielectric polymer-based tunable lenses is fast response to electric stimuli. But the essential flexible electrodes degrade performance of the lens. Polyvinylchloride gel-based tunable lens has reported impressive performance without flexible electrodes.

  • Recently, development of a cryogenic fluids storage tank for storing or transporting liquid hydrogen is actively in progress. In cryogenic fluids storage tanks, hydrogen evaporates due to the extreme temperature difference inside and outside the tank. As the mass of the cryogenic fluids changes with continuous vaporization, the fluids level also changes. Therefore, there is need for a method of accurately measuring the level change in the storage tank. In the case of general cryogenic fluids, it is difficult to accurately measure the level because the dielectric constant is very low. As a method of measuring cryogenic fluids level with low dielectric constant, it can be used an Millimeter wave (MM wave) FMCW radar sensor. However, the signal sensitivity is very weak and the level accuracy is poor. In this paper, the signal sensitivity is improved by designing the horn lens antenna of the existing 80 GHz FMCW radar sensor. Horn lens antenna is fabricated by FDM/SLA type 3D printer according to horn and lens characteristics. The horn is used to increase the signal gain and the lens improves the signal straightness. This makes it possible to measure the level of cryogenic fluids with a low dielectric constant.

  • Recently, Impulse radars using UWB technologies are widely use for measuring distance, or for transmitting uncompressed high resolution videos. However, since the UWB band spans over octave bands, it is not easy to design such a system. Wide band impedance matching is required for antennas and other RF area. In this study, we designed and fabricated sinuous antenna for 3~6 GHz octave band application. We also designed and attached a dielectric lens to improved the directional gain of the antenna. The gain of the antenna was 6~10 dBi. The dielectric lens attached sinuous antenna was used to transmit HD video data. The maximum reach distance was 90 meter with 10mW power.
