Welding is critical technique for the joining of materials in the nation's major Manufacturing industries. Since 1998, leaders in welding industry have defined a vision of the issues and opportunities that it will face in 2020. In developing this vision document, more than 25 senior managers and respected experts from various segments of the welding community met to begin a dialog about the future of the welding industry. They were brought together to develop a long-range business plan for their industry that would identify how it would meet the needs of manufacturers, of the marketplace, and of society in 2020. In essence, these decision makers created an ideal vision of the state of their industry in 20 years, and the strategy to reach it. Welding is a precise, reliable, and cost-effective, method for joining materials. No other technique is as widely used by manufacturers to join metals and alloys efficiently. Most of the familiar objects in modern society, form buildings and bridges, to vehicles, computers, and medical devices, could not be produced without the use of welding. Despite the importance of welding to the manufacturing industry, the leaders in this area felt that welding was not appreciated as much as it should be from the society. The welding industry consists of the “users” of welding techniques as well as the companies, universities and other organizations that industry look for improvements in their operations by 2020, and should find their interest addressed in this document. A major economic impact study co sponsored by AWS and EWI and supported by US Navy, State of Ohio, US Department of Commerce, and major companies was kicked off. This two-year study will determine the economic impact of welding on the United States economy. The objective of this study is to break a paradigm about welding-those of us who are heavily involved in welding, believe strongly that much of our gross domestic product is directly dependent on welding. Furthermore, continued advances in the field of welding are necessary to achieving further increases in productivity that makes our economy strong. Yet, despite intuition, anecdotal information, and fragmented analyses, the completing quantitative information that would proved the justification for strategic actions to further develop this critical field is not currently available.

In this research, we have developed a "computer tutor" that mimics the human tutor with animated tutoring dialog agent and the agent was integrated to teaching-learning material for elementary science subject. The developed system is a natural language based teaching-learning system using one-to-one dialogue. The developed pedagogical dialogue teaching-learning system analysis student's answer then provides appropriate answer or questions after comparing the student's answer with elementary school level achievement. When the agent gives either question or answer it uses the TTS(Text-to-Speech) function. Also the agent has an animated human tutor face for providing more human like feedback. The developed dialogue interface has been applied to 64 6th grade students. The test results show that the test group's average score is higher than the control group by 10.797. This shows that unlike conventional web courseware, our approach that "ask-answer" process and the animated character, which has human tutor's emotional expression, attracts students and helps to immerse to the courseware.

The importance of a using the visual media in English education has been increased. By an importance of Characters in English language content, the more effort is needed for a learner to show the English pronunciation and a realistic implementation. In this paper, we tried to review the Syntax-based Educational Contents Authoring System. For the more realistic lip-sync character, 3D character to enhance the efficiency of the education was constructed. We used a chart of the association structure analysis of mouth's shape. we produced an optimized 3D character through a process of a concept, a modeling, a mapping and an animating design. For more effective educational content for 3D character creation, the next research will be continuously a 3d Character added to a hand motion and body motion in order to show an effective communication example.

Databases publicly available for online searching permit both citation and subject searching, however, subject searching has dominated the online search environment. Despite the power of citation searching, it may be underutilized This study explored the relationship between the number of cited references used in a citation search and information retrieval effectiveness, a relatively unstudied phenomenon. Three articles in the library and information science literature were chosen to represent sample questions. Cited reference searches were conducted for each article and each of its references. All searches were conducted in Social Scisearch and Scisearch on DIALOG. Relevance judgments on the retrieved citations were obtained from the authors of the original articles. This research focused on analyzing, in terms of information retrieval effectiveness, the overlap among postings sets retrieved by various combinations of cited references. The findings from the three case studies clearly showed that the more cited references used for the citation search, the better the performance, in terms of retrieving more relevant documents, up to a point of diminishing retums. In addition, generally the overall level of overlap among relevant documents sets was found to be low. Therefore, if only some of the cited references among many candidates are used for a citation search, a significant proportion of relevant documents may be missed. The analysis of the characteristics of cited references provided the ways to predict which cited refereces would be useful to improve information retrieval. The findings of this comprehensive exploratory study are of interest for both theoretical and practical reasons. They contribute to the development of a theoretical model for the effective use of the citation search. This model might also be implemented in operational online systems. In addition, the findings potentially will help online searchers improve their search strategies using the citation search so that they can better achieve their information retrieval goals: the retrieval of items relevant to a given question and the suppression of nonrelevant items.

The purpose of this study was to identify nursing needs for hospice patients and their families in order to establish a foundation for appropriate Korean hospice care. To achieve the purpose of this study, 1 interviewed 50 patients who were going to die within 3 or 6 months and 42 family members of these patients who were registered in Pusan National University Hospital Hospice Program. The interview was done in the patient's room using semi-dialog style questionnaire. Data collection was done from March 1, 1999 to September 30. 1999. The important results of this study are summarized as follows : 1. Nursing needs that patients and their families have experienced were classified into six nursing domains; physical, emotional, economic, educational, spiritual and postmortal care. 2. Nursing needs of hospice patients are; pain control(80%), physical comfort(72%), consideration from medical personnel(68%), provision of information(64%), best treatment(60%), help of volunteers(36%), and continuous hospital treatment(32%). 3. Nursing needs of the families are; pain-control in Patients(97.6%), best treatment(97.6%), physical comfort of patients(95.2%), continuous hospital treatment(92.8%), provision of information(80.9%), consideration from medical personnel(76.1%), expectation of recovery(66.6%), emotional support of family(61.9%), and physical comfort of family(40.4%). It is concluded that there is a real difference between the nursing needs of patients and the nursing needs of their families. Therefore we must examine and intervene for the demands of patients and their families using a holistic approach in order to meet their hospice needs.
The goat of the present research is to improve the quality of life of both the elderly patients with dementia and their caregivers. For this Purpose, we developed a communication aid system that is consisted of three modules such as speech recognition engine, graphical agent. and database classified by a nursing schedule. The system was evaluated in an actual environment of nursing facility by introducing the system to an older mail patient with dementia. The comparison study was then carried out with and without system, respectively. The occupational therapists then evaluated subject"s reaction to the system by photographing his behaviors. The evaluation results revealed that the proposed system was more responsive in catering to needs of subject than professional caregivers. Moreover we could see that the frequency of causing the utterances of subject increased by introducing the system.
The remote monitoring system including hemodynamic information and pump status of the implanted animal could be helpful during the in vivo experiment or clinical trial for an artificial heart Implantation. In order to monitor the course of the in vivo experiment continuously and anywhere, web-based remote monitoring system was developed, which can monitor pressures(AoP, LAP, RAP, PAP) and flow information as well as the pump operating conditions. The system consists of data sending, storing viewer part. The data sending part was constructed using component object model and the viewer part was constructed using the Java applet. In addition, the dialog box was introduced to communicate earth other instantly and the alarming function was also introduced when the hemodynamic values were out of the desired ranges. The developed remote monitoring system was applied during the in vivo experiment of the BVAD (Bi-ventricular Assist Device) implantation for 1 month and showed designed work without failure.
Care for the human spirit is a core component of quality end-of-life care. Logotherapy, based on the premise that the primary motivation of human beings is to find meaning and purpose in life, can be helpful in providing care for patients, families, and loved ones in hospice care. The use of Socratic dialog in posing questions about one's life experiences, values, and attitudes is a useful method of evoking reflection. Guidance for finding meaning, even until one's last moments, can be found in the three categories: (a) tasks or deeds, (b) experiences of love and beauty, and (c) attitudes chosen in spite of a fate that cannot be changed. Self-transcendence, defined as getting outside the self for the good of others, can add meaning to life. A growing body of research concerning meaning-centered therapy is promising for improving spiritual well-being and a sense of meaning and purpose in life.

To predict the fatigue life of the Hub Bearing Unit(HBU), preload effect and initial axial clearance have to be considered. Various theory and equations for the HBU design used in the passenger car are well developed in many literatures. But most design hand book for bearings or bearing catalogues do not consider the initial axial clearance and preload effect. So there are limits and difficulties to use those data in actual bearing design. To consider the preload effect and initial axial clearance, complex elliptic integrals and nonlinear equations are involved. These equations are difficult to solve during the design process. In order to solve these problems effectively, a program is developed to solve these equations reliably and to help the designer in obtaining the performance data of the HBU such as load distribution, maximum contact stress and fatigue life. The preprocessor of the program helps users to prepare the input data through a dialog box and the post processor makes graphical presentation of the result. In this paper, theoretical and numerical background for the prediction of the fatigue life of the HBU is explained. A simple example is presented to show the usefulness of developed program.

This paper discusses the development of an interactive and graphic software for the education and training of power system operation and control, especially for students and beginners. This software has a lot of functions for users to simulate the power system operation and control with ease. These functions included in this software are followings. First, this software includes a Graphic User Interface (GUI) - which contains interactive simulation scheme, Windows dialog box, graphic representations, and graphic icons - so that users can handle the software in user-friendly environments. Second, it uses a graphic editor so that users can easily edit the one-line diagram of the power system. Third, it prepares a database system so that users can manage the power system data for simulation easily. Fourth, the application modules included in the software are the Economic Dispatch (ED) and the Automatic Load-Frequency Control (ALFC). These application modules are designed as independent modules. Using the ED module, users can understand the basic concepts of the ED with ease. And using the ALFC module, they can easily acquire the basic understanding of the response of the ALFC between the two-area systems. The proposed software is tested on both the 16 bus and the two-area sample system. The test has confirmed the functions of the developed software. It is anticipated that the software will be useful for the education and training of power system operation and control for the power engineering study at university or for the training of the beginner at power industry.
