  • The purpose of this study is to explore the conceptions of children and their activities in everyday lives during the late period of the Goryo Dynasty. The historical method was used and the materials for analysis were the literatures written from the late thirteenth century to the fourteenth century in the Goryo Dynasty, such as 'the Ikjaijip'(익재집), 'Mokeunjip'(목은집), 'Yangchonjip'(양촌집). According to the results, the perspective on the nature of a chad was that children were inherently good with the true character which was given from natural laws and that each child was born with different natural endowment. Also, the notions on child development were that the infancy was a pure and perfect period which us not contaminated by temperament and worldly desires, instead of the developmental model that childhood is as a stage and the child must develop from the state of incompetence to the state of maturity. In addition, there were the principles for development that were keeping the innate ideal state and fostering it from the earliest time as infants were born with innate ideal state or ability. The concepts of children's characteristics were considered that they were inclined to make much noise and movement, but to have the plain and straightforward expressions and consistency in their feelings and everyday activities. And intelligent abilities for learning were often considered as desirable traits. In everyday lives, children did the household chores such as caring for livestock and silkworms or embroidering. Among their games were exploring activities, free plays using natural materials, pretend-plays, bamboo-stilts riding, and Yutnori.

  • Purpose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the premature infants' responses to infant massage (tactile and kinesthetic stimulation). These responses measured by weight, physiological (vagal tone, heart rate, oxygen saturation) and behavioral responses (behavioral states, motor activities, and behavioral distress). Methods. This study was conducted using an equivalent control pretest-posttest design. The sample was divided into two groups of 13 infants with gestational age less than 36 weeks at birth, birth weight less than 2000g, and no congenital anomalies. The experimental group received the massage intervention twice daily for 10 days. The data were collected for 10 minutes prior to and 10 minutes after the massage. Results. The vagal tone was significantly higher after massage than before massage in the experimental group, while no change in the control group. The experimental group had significantly higher scores for awake state and motor activity than the control group. Significantly greater awake state, more fidgeting or crying, and increased motor activity were reported after massage than before massage. Conclusions. The results of this study showed that massage therapy might enhance optimal physiological responses and behavioral organization of premature infants. Nursing staff in the NICU can use massage to promote the infant's capability to respond positively to his environment and to provide developmental support for healthy premature infants.

  • This study introduces the development of elementary science textbooks in Korea. In Korea there has been eight revisions to the National curriculum and the development of nine textbooks. The State of Korea has organized textbook development teams, but this time the State chose the development team through public contest. Researchers suggested the 'FLOW' development model based upon results of studies in creative education and developed the new science textbooks. The 'FLOW' model includes four stages, aimed towards capturing students' interest in science (Fun Science), engaging students in various scientific inquiries and experiences (Lab. Experience), organizing their own knowledge of science (Organizing Knowledge), and to encourage students to become little scientists (Willing to be a Scientist). The textbook is a research-developmental textbook that utilizes various literature and exploration-strategic textbooks. The textbook's basis is formed upon scientists' experiences that assist in the realization of 'inquiry' that is emphasized within the science field.

  • Purpose: The main purpose of this study was to identify the correlation between the child rearing attitudes and the maternal role strain of mother with infants. Method: This study is designed as a descriptive research study and the data was collected from 82 mothers and infants by means of an interview and questionnaire in a period from July 2002 to December 2002, when they came to screen their infant's growth and developmental state at a public health center. Result: The results of this study were as follows: There was a significant positive correlation between the child rearing attitudes and maternal role strain(r.=.53, p=.000). There was a significant difference between the father's employment state and child rearing attitude of mothers(t.=5.22, p<.000). There was a significant difference between male infant and female infants in maternal role strain(t.=3.8, p=0.04). Conclusion: When the child rearing attitude was positive, the subject's maternal role strain was high. Also further research is needed on social support or other factors in the subjects in child-rearing attitudes and maternal role strain.

  • Mitochondria are ubiquitous and multi-functional organelles involved in diverse metabolic processes, namely energy production and biomolecule synthesis. The intracellular mitochondrial morphology and distribution change dynamically, which reflect the metabolic state of a given cell type. A dramatic change of the mitochondrial dynamics has been observed in early development that led to further investigations on the relationship between mitochondria and the process of development. A significant developmental process to focus on, in this review, is a differentiation of neural progenitor cells into neurons. Information on how mitochondria-regulated cellular energetics is linked to neuronal development will be discussed, followed by functions of mitochondria and associated diseases in neuronal development. Lastly, the potential use of mitochondrial features in analyzing various neurodevelopmental diseases will be addressed.

  • It is a truism that mathematics is about relations (cf. [Halford, G. S. (1999). The properties of representations used in higher cognitive processes: Developmental implications. In: Sigel, I. E. (Ed.), The Development of Mental Representation: Theories and Applications (pp. 147-168). Mahwah, New Jersey: Erlbaum]). In this article we are considering few problems related to the Viviani's and Routh's Theorems. All Problems are connected by the relation which exists between the distances of the point inside the triangle to it sides. We show how reasoning about the relations could lead the student's problem solving process and give easy to understand solutions of the problems. Among the problems being considered are the proof of the Converse to Viviani's Theorem, the formulas for areas of all figures formed by the sides of triangle and its cevians.

  • Recent economic changes throughout the world, either development or crises and recessions, have prompted a host of nutrition related problems, including a decreased prevalence of undernutrition, an increase in the prevalence of diet related diseases, widespread food insecurity as crop prices increase, and so on. In addition, evidence is mounting that suggests that exposure to poor nutrition early in life is a predisposing factor for chronic diseases in adulthood. Thus, the role of international or community nutrition professionals is vital to not only studying and understanding the interplay between economics, food policy, and health, but also to improving the ability to intervene and prevent many problems related to food insecurity in developed and developing countries. The purpose of this review is to outline and describe these issues as a means to open discussion on how to best alleviate major nutrition problems in the world.

  • Librarians, who work for University libraries in Korea experience a lot of confusion and difficulties because of rapidly-changing technological conditions and under-developed understanding of the University Libraries' full potential on the part of the users. I present the concept of 'Subject Services' as an approach which librarians could use to overcome these difficulties in their own way. The 'Subject Services' refers to the 'subjectized' collection development and reference services, which can more specifically address the users' needs. To make this idea more concrete, I selected Pusan National University Library as the case of my qualitative research. And I made use of various research techniques such as 'participant observation' and 'ethnographic interview'. After looking into the case library in depth, I found that the concept of 'Subject Specialist'. a person who has double master's degrees including that of library and information science, is more suitable to the University Libraries in Korea at the present developmental stage. At the end of this article, propose that the development of Core Collections, the improvement of subject-oriented reference services and the continuing education of librarians should be emphasized.

  • Recently, many researchers have been interested in attachment processes in adolescence. However, the nature of attachment formation and transfer during this developmental period were not answered yet. This study examine the mechanism of attachment transfer from parents to friends, and the effects of childhood attachment styles on the level of attachment transfer and loneliness in adolescence. The resets show the majority of participants(70%) used their parents as primary attachment figures but were in the process of transferring attachment-related functions from parents to peers. There were the significant effects of attachment style, the level of transfer or state and trait loneliness in adolescence. This study provide the implications and limitation for conceptualization and measurement of adolescent attachment formation and loneliness.
