  • A new approach for determining global threshold value of binary image is proposed in this paper. In the proposed algorithm, bit-plane information which involve the shapes of original image is used for dividing image into two parts; object and background. Optimal threshold value are selected based on difference values of average between two regions, which is considered in global binary thresholding. Proposed method is no need to set a initial value, and consequently, it is relatively simple as well as robust. Experimental results showed a good performance in preserving edge not only continuous tone images but also document image.

  • In genneral, Businger expression is used for determining a turbulance diffusion coefficient. In this study, it is applied to the surface elements of cities such as Asphalt, Cround, Grass, Pond. We set up 5 m-height bar and measured the ary temperature and wet temperature at 도 height of 0.13, 0.27, 0.5, 1, 0, 3.0, 5.0m. In addition we measured the wind gradient and wind velocity at the height 3 m solar radiation continuously for 48 hours on the surface. Compared the measured data to Businger expression the result showed that Businger expression can be well applied to the complex surface of the city.

  • This paper presents the development of linear quadratic regulation and output tracking algorithms using output feedback when both the measurement and performance output equations contain direct feedthrough terms. Although all physical systems can be modeled without direct feedthrough, there are still many situations where system models with direct feedthrough are important. For this situation, we modify previous work on the same topic for systems without direct feedthrough. It is shown that for the regulation problem, the optimal output feedback gain for a direct feedthrough case can be directly obtained, via a transformation, from the approach used for systems without direct feedthrough. However, for the tracking problem, a new set of coupled matrix equations for determining the optimal output feedback gain is derived from the necessary conditions for minimizing the cost function. The effectiveness of the developed algorithms is demonstrated using numerical examples.

  • Determining the binding sites in protein-nucleic acid complexes is essential to the complete understanding of protein-nucleic acid interactions and to the development of new drugs. We have developed a set of algorithms for analyzing protein-nucleic acid interactions and for predicting potential binding sites in protein-nucleic acid complexes. The algorithms were used to analyze the hydrogen-bonding interactions in protein-RNA and protein-DNA complexes. The analysis was done both at the atomic and residue level, and discovered several interesting interaction patterns and differences between the two types of nucleic acids. The interaction patterns were used for predicting potential binding sites in new protein-RNA complexes.

  • Determining tool-approach directions is an important issue when an effort is made to transfer CAD data into manufacturing automatically. An algorithm is developed to determine whether a given part can be machined on a three-axis milling machine. lf a set of feasible tool-approach directions exists for a sculptured surface, the NC tool path and G-codes for machining the surface on a three-axis milling machine can be generated automatically by an NC tool path generation algorithm. The algorithm can be used for orientation and fixturing of the workpiece for interference free machining. The algorithm can also be applied to checking the translational separability of polyhedral parts in automatic assembly.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate whether a group of predictor variables which constitute four determinants of dining satisfaction do exert a significant influence on messures of dining satisfaction in family restaurant. Canonical correlation analysis is used to achieve the purpose of this study. This technique enables the researcher to test for the effects of a set of predictor variables upon a multidimensional measure of dining satisfaction in family restaurant. Results suggest that multiple determinants are important in determining dining satisfaction in family restaurant. No one determinant can fully explain its complexities. The four determinants also appear to vary in terms of importance. Individual variables within four determinants also appear to vary in terms of importance. Finally, the results of the study provide some insight into the types of marketing strategies that can be successfully used by operators who manage family restaurants.

  • This paper suggests a computer software system which generates standard times for assembly products. The system called "computer aided logical system for standard times(CALS4ST)" incorporates a modified bill of materials, BOM4ST(BOM for standard time) to deal with auxiliary operations which are not directly related to parts and assemblies listed in the standard BOM. Typical examples of the operations include inspection, adjustment, and repairing works to be done before or after assembly operations. Once standard time data bases for both the part assembly operations and the auxiliary operations are set up, the system relates the BOM4ST to the standard time data bases so as to calculate the standard time for a assembly part concerned. According to the structure of parts and auxiliary operations in the BOM4ST, their standard times stored in the data bases are to be sequentially added up considering the specified assembly-operation characteristics. To illustrate the feasibility of the system, the case study of L company is provided.

  • This paper deals with a mathematical model and an algorithm for the problem of determining k most vital arcs in the shortest path problem. First, we propose a 0-1 integer programming model for finding k most vital arcs in shortest path problem given the ordered set of paths with cardinality q. Next, we also propose an algorithm for finding k most vital arcs ln the shortest path problem which uses the 0-1 Integer programming model and shortest path algorithm and maximum flow algorithms repeatedly Malik et al. proposed a non-polynomial algorithm to solve the problem, but their algorithm was contradicted by Bar-Noy et al. with a counter example to the algorithm in 1995. But using our algorithm. the exact solution can be found differently from the algorithm of Malik et al.

  • This paper presents a method of estimation of fatigue demands on connection bolts of tubular steel wind turbine towers. The presented method relies on numerical simulation of aerodynamic loads and structural behavior of bolted connections modeled using finite element method. Variability of wind parameters is represented by a set of values derived from their probability densities, which are adjusted based on field measurements. Numerically generated stress time-series show agreement with the measurements from strain gauges inside bolts, in terms of power spectra and the resulting damage. Position of each bolt has a determining effect on its fatigue damage. The proposed framework for fatigue life estimation represents the complexities in loading and local behavior of the structure. On the other hand, the developed procedure is computationally efficient since it requires a limited number of simulations for statistically representing the wind variations.

  • The aerostatic stability analysis of a long-span suspension bridge by the Element-free Galerkin (EFG) method is presented in this paper. Nonlinear effects due to wind structure interactions should be taken into account in determining the aerostatic behavior of long-span suspension bridges. The EFG method is applied to investigate torsional divergence of suspension bridges, based on both the three components of wind loads and nonlinearities of structural geometric. Since EFG methods, which are based on moving least-square (MLS) interpolation, require only nodal data, the description of the geometry of bridge structure and boundaries consist of defining a set of nodes. A numerical example involving the three-dimensional EFG model of a suspension bridge with a span length of 888m is presented to illustrate the performance and potential of this method. The results indicate that presented method can effectively be applied for modeling suspension bridge structure and the computed results obtained using present modeling strategy for nonlinear suspension bridge structure under wind flow are encouragingly acceptable.
