Detection of Surface Defects in Eggs Using Computer Vision (컴퓨터 시각을 이용한 계란 표면의 결함 검출)

  • A computer vision system was built to generate images of a stationary egg. This system includes a. CCD camera, a frame grabber, and an incandescent back lighting system An image processing algorithm was developed to accurately detect surface holes and surface cracks on eggs. With 20W of incandescent back light, the detection rate was shown to be the highest. The Sobel operator was found to be the best among various enhancing filters examined. The threshold value to distinguish between the crack and the translucent spots was found to be linear with the average gray level of a whole egg image. Those values of both gray level and area were used as criteria to detect holes in egg and those values of both area and roundness were used to detect cracks in egg. For a sample of 300 eggs, this system was able to correctly analyze an egg for the presence of a defect 97.5% of the time. On the average, it took 59.5 seconds to analyze an egg image and determine whether or not it was defected.

Development of a Denaturing High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (DHPLC) Assay to Detect Parasite Infection in Grass Shrimp Palaemonetes pugio

  • In developing a useful tool to detect parasitic dynamics in an estuarine ecosystem, a denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography (DHPLC) assay was optimized by cloning plasmid DNA from the grass shrimp Palaemonetes pugio, and its two parasites, the trematode Microphallus turgidus and bopyrid isopod Probopyrus pandalicola. The optimal separation condition was an oven temperature of $57.9^{\circ}C$ and 62-68% of buffer B gradient at a flow rate of 0.45 mL/min. A peptide nucleic acid blocking probe was designed to clamp the amplification of the host gene, which increased the amplification efficiency of genes with low copy numbers. Using the DHPLC assay with wild-type genomic, the assay could detect GC Gram positive bacteria and the bopyrid isopod (P. pandalicola). Therefore, the DHPLC assay is an effective tool for surveying parasitic dynamics in an estuarine ecosystem.

  • In this paper, we propose the method of lane and obstacle detection using edge and horizontal projection. we convert color image to gray image and detect edge. After lane detection using edge, we detect the obstacle using horizontal projection in the region of lane. The simulation shows that our method is able to detect lane and obstacle in the place of monotonous light.

  • This paper proposed a new magnetic field detection algorithm to detect metal pieces in food producing processes. This algorithm can detect mixed metal pieces by sensing magnetic field. Some metal pieces are passed through an over-current circuit to magnetize them. The magnetic field sensor can detect the change in the magnetic field on theconveyor belt caused by the flow of the metal pieces in the food product. However, such a method detects the output of signals that change their amplitude and phase according to the movement of the conveyor belt with the food product, in which the equilibrium of the positive signal that is created in the receiver coil loses its balance due to the magnetized material. This includes not only the signal elements resulting from the effect of the alternating magnetic fields of the mixed metals, but also the signal elements resulting from the effect of the alternating magnetic fields of the examined object itself.

  • This paper proposes the hand contour detector which is robust to noises. Existing methods reduce noises by applying morphology to extracted edges, detect finger tips by using the center of hands, or exploit the intersection of curves from hand area candidates based on J-value segmentation(JSEG). However, these approaches are so vulnerable to noises that are prone to detect non-hand parts. We propose the noise tolerant hand contour detection method in which non-skin area noises are removed by applying skin area detection, contour detection, and a threshold value. By using the implemented system, we observed that the system was successfully able to detect hand contours.

  • Intravenous(IV) therapy being in use for many patients may cause serious side effects such as infiltration, extravasation. To minimize such side effects, it is important to detect symptoms appearing when fluid escapes from blood vessel to tissue as soon as possible. This paper describes a device which has been developed to detect IV infiltration early using optical sensor. The device detects IV infiltration as measuring intensity of lights reflected from that lights after emitting lights in IV therapy site. The lights are consisted of 4 different waves which provide different reflection ratio depending the fluid used in IV therapy. The experimental results show that the device can be used to detect IV infiltration early.

Autonomous Navigation of AGVs in Automated Container Terminals

  • In this paper, an autonomous navigation system for autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs) operated in an automated container terminal is designed. The navigation system is based on the sensors detecting the range and bearing. The navigation algorithm used is an interacting multiple model (IMM) algorithm to detect other AGVs and avoid other obstacles using informations obtained from multiple sensors. As models to detect other AGVs (or obstacles), two kinematic models are derived: Constant velocity model for linear motion and constant speed turn model for curvilinear motion. For constant speed turn model, an unscented Kalman filter (UKF) is used because of drawbacks of the extended Kalman filter (EKF) in nonlinear system. The suggested algorithm reduces the root mean squares error for linear motions, while it can rapidly detect possible turning motions.

  • This paper proposes technique to detect ground fault in railway high voltage distribution lines. Overcurrent relay technique is widely used for detecting one line ground fault that occurs most frequently in railway high voltage distribution lines. However, ground fault in distribution line is usually high impedance fault with arc. Because the fault current magnitude measured in substation is very small, the conventional overcurrent relay can't detect the high impedance ground fault. Therefore this paper proposes the advanced technique using wavelet transform. It extracts D1 component from fault signals and detects fault comparing magnitude of D1 component in each phase. To evaluate this proposed technique, we model distribution system using PSCAD/EMTDC and extract various fault data. In conclusion this technique can detect ground fault including high impedance fault regardless of fault distance, fault impedance etc.

  • BiCMOS circuits mixed with CMOS and bipolar technologies show peculiar fault characteristics that are different from those of other technoloties. It has been reported that because most of short faults in BiCMOS circuits cause logically intermediate level at outputs, current monitoring method is required to detect these faluts. However current monitoring requires additional hardware capabilities in the testing equipment and evaluation of test responses can be more difficult. In this paper, we analyze the characteristics of faults in BiCMOS circuit together with their test methods and propose a new design technique for testability to detect the faults by logic monitoring. An effective method to detect the transition delay faults induced by performance degradation by the open or short fault of bipolar transistors in BiCMOS circuits is presented. The proposed design-for-testability methods for BiCMOS circuits are confirmed by the SPICE simulation.

  • To detect the PD events, we have studied a fusion sensor, the UHF sensor and the single-walled carbon nanotube(SWNT) gas sensor. We are accustomed to the UHF sensor which have employed to detect the partial discharges in apparatus GIS-like. But the SWNT gas sense is a newly way proposed to detect the partial discharges. In this study, we monitored not only the changes of the electrical conductance of the SWNT sensors in responding to the PD events but also the signal of the UHF sensor at the same time with IEC 60270 standard method for reference on the partial discharge events.
