In a fixed bed reactor, adsorption capacity of $SO_2$ in simulated flue gases was investigated with NMO(natural manganese ore), composed of various metal oxides, iron ore and $CuO/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ as adsorbents. The experiment carried out in a fluidized bed reactor with variables such as gas velocity, temperature and particle size. Iron ore was excluded in the fluidized bed reactor experiment for the lower adsorption capacity. The adsorption of $SO_2$ in metal oxide is a typical chemisorption because the adsorption capacity of all adsorbents increased with temperature. The effect of particle size on the adsorption capacity was varied with the ratio, $U_o/U_{mf}$ and the difference of $U_o-U_{mf}$. $U_o$ is the gas velocity, $U_{mf}$ is the minimum fluidization gas velocity. $U_o/U_{mf}$ and $U_o-U_{mf}$ explain the behavior of the gas and solids in the fluidized bed reactor. From the performance equation of the fluidized bed reactor, kinetic reaction rate constants were obtained by the non-linear least square method. The adsorption capacity of NMO proved the potential use of $SO_2$ adsorbents.

A two-stage bioreactor system using sulfur-oxidizing bacteria was studied to abate high strength hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) from biogas. The two-stage bioreactor consisted of a $H_2S$ absorption column (0.5 L) and a microbial oxidation column (1 L) in series, and the liquid medium was continuously recirculated through the columns. The objectives of this study were to determine the feasibility of the bioreactor for biogas desulfurization and to investigate the effect of the medium circulation rate on the system performance. An averaged concentration of $H_2S$ introduced to the bioreactor was 530 ppm, corresponding to an overall loading rate of $44.4g/m^3/hr$. During the initial 20 days period at the medium recirculation rate of 8 reactor volumes per hour (12 L/hr), the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration in the oxidation column was 6 mg/L, while the DO in the absorption column was 0.5 mg/L showing that the oxygen contents of the biogas stream was not altered. Because of the biological oxidation of $H_2S$ in the oxidation column, the sulfate concentration increased from 200 mg/L to 5,600 mg/L in the liquid medium. The removal efficiency of $H_2S$ was greater than 99% in the initial operation period. After the initial period, the medium recirculation rate between the two columns was stepwise changed eight times from 1.0 to 40 vol/hr (1.5~60 L/hr). At the recirculation rate of faster than 4 vol/hr, the $H_2S$ removal efficiencies were found to be high, but the efficiency declined at the lower recirculation rates than the threshold.

For a risk analysis in a chemical process, it is important to reflect correctly the characteristic properties of the target process. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was adopted for the advanced risk analysis in a residual hydro desulfurization (RHDS) process by considering operation condition, layout of instruments and facilities, atmospheric condition, and wind direction. Release and explosion simulations for the RHDS by using FEA (Finite Element Analysis) and CFD showed the applicability of 3D scanning methods for estimation of release hole size and release amount.
The objectives of this study were to investigate the characteristics of limestone calcination and sulfation in a fluidized bed reactor with bed temperature and air velocity. The experimental results were presented as follows ; First, the bed temperature had a great influence on the calcination and the sulphur retention of limestone and paper sludge. In paper sludge, the optimum conditions in calcination and desulfurization temperature was at $800^{\circ}C$ and in natural limestone, that was at $850^{\circ}C$ or $900^{\circ}C$. Second, as air velocity increased, the specific surface area of particles decreased. But the difference of surface area according to air velocity was not too large. The specific surface area of paper sludge was larger than that of natural limestone. Third, as air velocity increased, the absorbed amount of sulfur dioxide decreased. And the absorbed amount of sulfur dioxide by paper sludge was larger than that of by natural limestone. Therefore, we knew that paper sludge was excellent absorbent and bed temperature had a great important variable on the calcination and sulphur retention in a fluidized bed.
The adsorptive removal of organic sulfur compounds including tert-butylmercaptane(TBM), tetrahydrothiophene(THT) and dimethylsulfide(DMS) in methane was investigated over NaY and copper-exchanged NaY(CuNaY) zeolites at 303 K and atmospheric pressure. In the ternary adsorption system, the preferential adsorption of THT over other sulfur compounds on NaY and the concurrent adsorption of all sulfur compounds on CuNaY were achieved, which could be explained by the breakthrough curve, the temperature-programmed desorption, and the apparent activation energy for desorption. The sulfur uptake capacity of CuNaY(2.90~3.20 mmol/g) was much higher than that of NaY(0.70~0.90 mmol/g). A comparative study indicated that the $Cu^{1+}$ sites and acidity of CuNaY were probably responsible for the strong interaction with sulfur atom and high sulfur uptake abilities.

The aim of the research is providing the application method of recycled materials to manufacture the low costed eco-friend block at currently operated concrete block plant. In this research, based on the previous research results on three types of slag cement with illite, desulfurized gypsum, and wasted refractory products, the actual block product was manufactured by the currently operated plant facility and evaluated their properties to suggest the optimal proportions. As an experimental results, in aspect of compressive strength, absorption ratio, freezing resistance, and pH, type III slag incorporating 5% desulfurized gypsum with 1% replaced illite as an aggregate could be suggested as am optimal proportion. In additionally, considering the high cost of the illite, it can be considered as an optimal proportion that type III slag incorporating 5% desulfurized gypsum for binder.

This paper describes the reduction of a hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) generated from a biogas plant. Micro bubble system is adopted to supply air into the water in the reaction chamber, which can increase the contact area of the supplied air to the reserving water. Two stage reaction chambers having two reaction rooms are designed and manufactured to enhance the reduction rate of a hydrogen sulfide. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is also considered to get rid of a hydrogen sulfide. Air volume rate to the water in a reaction chamber is maintained between 0.5 and $1.0m^3/min$. Throughout experimental measurement of the concentration of a hydrogen sulfide by changing the volume of supplied air into the water, reduction rate of a hydrogen sulfide increases as air volume increases. Adding sodium hydroxide to the water with the air supply can reduce effectively a hydrogen sulfide up to 99.5% from biogas. It is noted that a hydrogen sulfide generated by a biogas plant can reduce by supplying micro bubble air and sodium hydroxide effectively.

This paper describes some computational results of various energy and environmental systems using Patankar's SIMPLE method. The specific topics handled in this study are jet bubbling reactor for flue gas desulfurization, cyclone-type afterburner for incineration, 200m tall stack for 500 MW electric power generation, double skin and heat storage systems of building energy saving for the utilization of solar heating, finally turbulent combustion systems with liquid droplet or pulverized coal particle. A control-volume based finite-difference method with the power-law scheme is employed for discretization. The pressure-velocity coupling is resolved by the use of the revised version of SIMPLE, that is, SIMPLEC. Reynolds stresses are closed using the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ and RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ models. Two-phase turbulent combustion of liquid drop or pulverized coal particle is modeled using locally-homogeneous, gas-phase, eddy breakup model. However simple approximate models are incorporated for the modeling of the second phase slip and retardation of ignition without consideration of any detailed particle behavior. Some important results are presented and discussed in a brief note. Especially, in order to make uniform exit flow for the jet bubbling reactor, a well-designed structure of distributor is needed. Further, the aspect ratio in the double skin system appears to be one of important factors to give rise to the visible change of the induced air flow rate. The computational tool employed in this study, in general, appears as a viable method for the design of various engineering system of interest.

A flue gas emission known to cause an acid rain, containing sulfur dioxide, is tightly controlled by a regulation. The membrane contactor could be one of the alternatives which might be useful technologies for better performance of desulfurization. The fundamental sulfur dioxide separation data were obtained by a flat membrane contactor so that they could be utilized for the full scale membrane contactor. The separation of sulfur dioxide was measured in terms of the concentration of NaOH absorbent, the concentration of sulfur dioxide, the feed flow rate and different membrane materials. As the concentration of absorbent increased, the removal efficiency increased. By increasing the concentration of sulfur dioxide, the removal efficiency decreased. As the feed flow rate increased, it was observed that the removal efficiency decreased. Finally, the effect of the membrane material on separation was found to be negligible.
A mathematical model has been developed for simulating the spray dryer absorber (SDA) used in semi-dry flue gas desulfurization process. Fundamental equations include the component mass and heat balances in both gas and droplet phases and the equation of motion for a single droplet. The model developed described the pilot-plant data much better than the existing SPRAYMOD-M model. The effect of the process variables, whose values were chosen within the operation limits of the actual pilot plants, on % $SO_2$ removal or conversion of the sorbent were calculated, and discussed in terms of $SO_2$ absorption rate, the residence time of flue gas, the velocity and drying time of droplets. Finally, the % $SO_2$ removal was calculated with two independent process variables and the results were shown on three-dimensional or two-dimensional diagrams with the lines of constant % $SO_2$ removal, so that they can be easily applied to preliminary design of the SDA.
