In order to reveal the mechanism of heavy metal behavior in soils relating to factors such as soil pH, organic matter, C.E.C. and soil minerals influencing the activities of heavy metals, Cd, Cu and Zn were applied to soil columns filled with 8 different soils with adjusted soil pH to several levels between 3.0 to 11.0 and the amounts of adsorption and desorption of these heavy metals were measured. 1. At the adsorption maxima of three heavy metals(Cd, Cu and Zn) soil pH appeared to be near 6.0 regardless of properties of the 8 soils, and adsorption gradually decreased above and below pH 6.0. This phenomenon was the same in both heavy metal solutions and mixed solutions, and the mixed solution, containing three heavy metals, revealed slightly higher amounts of Cu adsorption and Cd adsorption. 2. It was also found that the adsorption of Cu and Zn by soils was positively correlated with C.E.C. and the organic matter of soils, respectively. However, the pH values showing maxima of heavy metal adsorption were negatively correlated with organic matter content by contrast with the correlation between the maxima and the C.E.C. values in soils. 3. The adsorption of Cu by soils markedly increased more with $Ca(OH)_2$ application than with NaOH application for soil pH adjusment. This was probably because of Ca effects in Cu precipitation in soils, in addition to the effect of the simple soil pH itself on Cu adsorption 4. It was also revealed that adsorbed Cu was hardly desorbed by $N-NH_4OAC$ solution from the Daejeong soil series compared to the Jeonbug and Yechun soil series. This was because the Daejeong soil series consisted of large amounts of expanding type Vermiculite minerals and also was high in C.E.C. and soil organic matter.

Silk sericin (SS) has been fabricated into beads using a 1 M LiCl/DMSO solvent and utilized as a heavy metal adsorbent. Among the various heavy metals, we targeted Cr(VI) for adsorption using SS beads and found that its adsorption depended on the coagulant used for the fabrication of the SS beads. When methanol was used as a coagulant, the beads had a better adsorption capacity than when ethanol was used except at pH 1. The adsorption behavior of Cr(VI) on the SS beads followed the BET isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity was 33.76 mg/g at pH 2. The adsorption of Cr(VI) was confirmed by FT-IR and EDS analyses. Finally, the desorption was carried out using NaOH solution, and it was found that 73.19% of the adsorbed Cr(VI) could be detached.
Although siderophore compounds are mainly biosynthesized as a response to iron deficiency in the environment, they also bind with other metals. A few studies have been conducted on the impact of heavy metals on the siderophore-mediated iron uptake by microbiome. Here, we investigated siderophore production by a variety of rhizosphere fungi under different concentrations of $Zn^{2+}$ ion. These strains were specifically isolated from the rhizosphere of Panax ginseng (Korean ginseng). The siderophore production of isolated fungi was investigated with chrome azurol S (CAS) assay liquid media amended with different concentrations of $Zn^{2+}$ (50 to $250{\mu}g/ml$). The percentage of siderophore units was quantified using the ultra-violet (UV) irradiation method. The results indicated that high concentrations of $Zn^{2+}$ ion increase the production of siderophore in iron-limited cultures. Maximum siderophore production by the fungal strains was detected at $Zn^{2+}$ ion concentration of $150{\mu}g/ml$ except for Mortierella sp., which had the highest siderophore production at $200{\mu}g/ml$. One potent siderophore-producing strain (Penicillium sp. JJHO) was strongly influenced by the presence of $Zn^{2+}$ ions and showed high identity to P. commune (100% using 18S-rRNA sequencing). The purified siderophores of the Penicillium sp. JJHO strain were chemically identified using UV, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MALDI-TOF-MS) spectra.
Investigation of Cd and Zn availability in four different soils as affected by the interactions of these two heavy metals was conducted using the metal desorption quantity-intensity (Q/I) isotherms. The soils were artificially contaminated with proper concentrations of Cd and Zn as $CdSO_4\;and\;ZnSO_4$ solutions. DTPA (diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid) - extractable and water-extiactable Cd or Zn from the soils were used as $Q_{Cd}\;or\;Q_{Zn}\;and\;I_{Cd}\;or\;I_{Zn}$ factors, respectively. The coefficient of determination for Cd and Zn desorption Q/I linear regression in the soils ranged from 0.947 to 0.999, which indicated that Q and I factors were closely correlated. The buffering capacity of Cd, $BC_{Cd}$, in the soils decreased with increasing Zn treatments, and the $BC_{Cd}$ values were ranged between 205.8 and 2255.6. The decreases of $BC_{Cd}$ values were mainly dependent upon the increases of $I_{Cd}$ factors. However, Zn buffering capacity. $BC_{Zn}$ decreased with increasing Cd treatments in acidic soils, and increased in neutral and calcareous alkaline soils. The $BC_{Cd}$ values were ranged from 143.2 to 6158.0. The values of $BC_{Zn}$ as influenced by the treatments of Cd were also controlled by the solubility of water-extractable Zn, $I_{Zn}$ factor. The solubility of water-extractable Cd and Zn was significantly dependent upon the changes of soil pH that were impacted by the treatment of Zn and Cd, respectively. Also, the availability of Cd was higher than Zn availability in the acidic and neutral soils, but Zn was higher than Cd in the calcareous alkaline soil.
This study was carried out to investigate characteristics and Pb(II) removal effect of natural clays in the batch mode test. The effect of parameters such as temperature, adsorption time and coexisting cations on the sorption ability and characteristics was investigated to find out whether the clays could be used as adsorbents. Several natural clays from domestic have been investigated to have high specific surface area and have minerals such as SiO$_2$ and $Al_2$O$_3$. As a result, removal effects of Pb(II) on clays were reached at equilibrium in aqueous solutions by stirring about 20 minutes. The removal effect of Pb(II) was best for Kang Jin clay than other clays in terms of fixed time. Adsorption efficiency was not influenced by the possibility of continuous treatment system of wastewater which contain heavy metals by using natural clays from domestic.
The ballast gravels are often contaminated by various pollutants, like diesel fuel, lubricants, and heavy metals. Especially, the gravels near the switching are apt to be polluted by the lubricant. Because this lubricant can pollute the soil of track, the contaminated ballast gravels should be cleaned immediately. In this study, a physical desorption method was used to remove the oil contaminants from the surface of the ballast gravels. Thermosetting resin was used as a media for physical remediation of ballast gravels. The total petroleum hydrocarbon of the gravels was monitored over time. In addition, scanning electron microscopic images were obtained to observe the removal of the oily pollutants from the surface of the gravels.
The sorption of metal ions with low-cost adsorbents plays an important role in sustainable development. In the present study, the efficacy of sugarcane bagasse, rain tree fruits (samaneasaman), banana stem and their mixtures, used as bio-sorbents, in the removal of Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution is evaluated. Batch studies are conducted, and residual ions were measured using Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP)-atomic spectrometer. Effect of pH, initial metal ion concentration, reaction time and adsorbent dosage are studied. The Pb(II) removal efficiency was observed to be 97.88%, 98.60% and 91.74% for rain tree fruits, banana stem and a mixture of adsorbents respectively. The highest Cu(II) ion removal was observed for sugarcane bagasse sorbent with an efficiency of 82.10% with a pH of 4.5 and a reaction time of 90 min. Finally, desorption studies were carried out to study the leaching potential of adsorbent, and it was found that the adsorbent is stable in water than the other leaching agents such as HCl, ammonium acetate, Sodium EDTA. Hence, these adsorbents can be effectively used for the removal of these heavy metals.
We addressed the development of a novel, low-cost, and high-efficient material from hybrid materials, known as microcapsules. Microcapsules are a composite adsorbent made of a mixture of tannin, sericite and chitosan. The FT-IR analysis showed that the microcapsules contain hydroxyl, carboxyl, carbonyl, and amino groups, which play an important role in the adsorption of heavy metals. The microcapsules were able to remove 99% of Pb(II) in 30 min, and obtained a removal efficiency of more than (13-50)%, compared with the single adsorbents of tannin, chitosan, and sericite. In adsorption kinetic analysis, pseudo-second-order adsorption was more suitable than pseudo-first-order adsorption, and chemical adsorption did not limit the adsorption rate of Pb(II) ion. In isothermal adsorption, Langmuir adsorption was more suitable than Freundlich adsorption, and the maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity was 167.82 (mg/g). Furthermore, desorption and reusability studies, as well as the applicability of the material for wastewater treatment, demonstrated that microcapsules offer a promising hybrid material for the efficient removal of significant water pollutants, i.e., Pb(II) from aqueous solutions.
An ubiquitous bacterium, Pseudomonar cepacia KH410 was isolated from fresh water plant root and identified. Adsorption of heavy metals of lead, cadmium and copper by this strain was investigated. Optimal conditions foradsorption was 1.0 dry g-biomass, at pH 4.0 and temperature of $40^{\circ}C$. Adsorption equilibrium reached max-imum after 120 min in 1000 mg/l metal solutions. The adsorption capacity (K) of lead was 5.6 times higher thancadmium and 4.0 times higher than that of copper. Adsorption of lead was applicable for Langmuir modelwhereas Freundlich model for cadmium and copper, respectively. Adsorption strength (1/n) of heavy metal ionswere in the order of lead>copper>cadmium. Uptake capacity of lead, cadmium and copper by dried cell was83.2,42.0,65.2 mg/g-biomass, respectively. Effective desorption was induced 0.1 M HCI for lead and 0.1 $HNO_3$ for cadmium and copper. Pretreatment to increase ion strength was the most effective with 0.1 M KOH.Uptake by immobilized cell was 77.8,58.5,71.2 mg/g-biomass for lead, cadmium and copper, respectively. Theimmobilized cell was more effective than ion exchange resin on removal of heavy metals in solution containinglight metals.

Urbanization causes many environmental, hydrological and ecological problems such as distortion of the natural water circulation system, increase in nonpoint source pollutants in stormwater runoff, degradation of surface water quality, and damage to the ecosystem. Due to the increase in impervious surface by urbanization, developed countries apply low impact development (LID) techniques as important alternatives to reduce the impacts of urbanization. In Korea, LID techniques were employed since 2012 in order to manage nonpoint source pollutants. LID technology is a technique for removing pollutants using a variety of physical, chemical and biological mechanisms in plants, microorganisms and filter media with the reduced effluence of stormwater runoff by mimicking natural water circulation system. These LID facilities are used in a variety of filter media, but an assessment has not been carried out for the comprehensive comparison evaluation of adsorption and desorption characteristics for the pollutant removal capacity. Therefore, this study was conducted to analyze the adsorption and desorption characteristics of various filter media used in the LID facilities such as sand, gravel, bioceramic, wood chips and bottom ash etc. in reducing heavy metals(Pb, Cu). In this study, the adsorption affinity for Pb in all filter media was higher than Cu. Pseudo second order equation and Langmuir-3 isotherm are more applicable in the adsorption kinetic model and adsorption isotherm model, respectively. As a result of the desorption experiment, the filter media does not exceed KSLT which is the hazardous substance leaching limit, showing the capability of the filter media in LID. The bioceramic and woodchip as filter medias were evaluated and exhibited excellent adsorption capacity for Pb.
