  • An activated carbon was tested for its ability to remove transition metal ions from aqueous solutions. Physical, chemical and liquid-phase adsorption characterizations of the carbon were done following standard procedures. Studies on the removal of Ni(II), Cu(II) and Fe(III) ions were attempted by varying adsorbate dose, pH of the metal ion solution and time in batch mode. The equilibrium adsorption data were fitted with Freundlich and Langmuir and the isotherm constants were evaluated, equilibrium time of the different three metal ions were determined. pH was found to have a significant role to play in the adsorption. The processes were endothermic and the thermodynamic parameters were evaluated. Desorption studies indicate that ion-exchange mechanism is operating.

  • When metallic alloys are reacted to hydrogen, heat transfer of storage tank effects hydrogen storage rate and capacity. If pulsating heat pipe are used to improve heat transfer efficiency, production of hydrogen storage tank can be more simple and economical. Experiment of heat pipe was conducted by varying working fluids and heat flux. According to supply heat flux, test indicate that R-22 and R-l42b were found lower temperature difference between evaporator and condenser than R-134a and Ethanol. Thermal resistances of R-22 and R-142b were also lower than others. Using R-142b as a working fluid, heat pipe type hydrogen storage tank is tested in absorption and desorption processes.

  • Hydrogen forms metal hydrides with some metals and alloys leading to solid-state storage under moderate temperature and pressure that gives them the safety advantage over the gas and liquid storage methods. However, it has disadvantages of slow hydrogen adsorption-desorption time and low thermal conductivity. To improve characteristics of metal hydrides, it is important that activation and thermal conductivity of metal hydrides are improved. In this study, we have been investigated hydrogen storage properties of Hydralloy C among Ti-Mn alloys. Also, the characteristics of activation and thermal conductivity of Hydralloy C were enhanced to improve kinetics of hydrogen adsorption-desorption. As physical activation method, PHEM (planetary high energy mill) was performed in Ar or $H_2$ atmosphere. Hydralloy C was also activated by $TiCl_3$ catalyst. To improve thermal conductivity, various types of ENG (expanded natural graphite) were used. The prepared samples were compacted at pressure of 500 bar. As a result, the activation properties of $H_2$ PHEM treated Hydralloy C was better than the other activation methods. Also, the amounts of hydrogen storage showed up to 1.6 wt%. When flake type ENG was added to Hydralloy C, thermal conductivity and hydrogen storage properties were improved.

  • Visible surface-assisted desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (SALDI-MS) has been investigated for several small macromolecules deposited on the graphite plate using laser radiation at 532 nm where most of the macromolecules are transparent. The graphite surface functioned well as a photon absorbing material and an energy transfer mediator for visible light. The results show that visible SALDI is a much softer ionization technique than UV-MALDI and FAB-MS in our results with synthetic macromolecules, PPG, PPGMBE and cavitand molecules. For the SALDI of biomolecules, glycerol as a proton source was essential with the graphite plate. As in visible SALDI, the role division of the photon absorbing material and the cationization agent can provide a generality in mass spectrometric analysis of macromolecules compared with MALDI using the dual functional matrix.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the removal efficiency of volitile organic compounds in soil, and the mechanism of desorption by bench scale microwave heating, Silt soil used for experiment and was impregnated with toluene, tetrachloroethylene, o-xylene and p-dichlorobenzene and the microwave treatment was conducted in a modified domestic microwave oven : 2450MHz, 700W. According to the results of the research the removal efficiency was improved with increasing water contents and the soil temperature appeared to plateau period extending to 2-3minutes corresponds to the temperature a which steam distillation was expected. The value of removal rate constant (k) were calculated on dry and moisty silt soil, respectively, which showed linear with increasing microwave heating time. Therefore, addition of a certain amount of water to the contaminated soil can efficiently enhance the ability of the soil to absorb microwave energy and promote the evaporation of the volitile contaminants.

  • This study was carried out to interpret hydraulic behavior and CO2 gas desorption in counter-current packing tower which packed 50mm plastic Hiflow-ring. The results are as follow : To compare with conventional packing, 50mm Hiflow-ring could save energy because of low pressure drop under high load. As relative error between calculated value and investigated value was less than 6% in the loading point and flooding point we found that we are predict results mathematically which occur in packing tower. The unique magnitude of packing which was used are as follows. $C_L=2.1{\times}10^{-4}$, n=0.787 so we can predict efficiency which occur

  • To estimate the nutrients delivery characteristics of Chogang stream to Keum River, sediment and soil characteristics were analyzed in the stream and in the stream bank. Along the stream, soil samples from river sediment were collected and tested monthly for phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations. Nitrogen concentration in the sediment is much lower than that of soil in the river bank especially in summer presumably due to the high desorption characteristics of nitrogen by the increasing rainfall energy during summer. Instead, the concentrations of phosphorus were similar for the sediment and the soil in the river bank due to the strong adsorption characteristics of phosphorus. Batch tests were performed to evaluate the desorption potential of the sediments. Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) was applied to quantify soil erosion in each watershed due to rainfall. It was estimated that approximately 25% of total phosphorus by mass basis could be released from the sediment if the water was disturbed vigorously. The mass load of nitrogen and phosphorus into the Chogang Stream from the watershed were evaluated from the USLE and release ratio of phosphorus.

  • Gold nanostructures (Au NSs) are useful and interesting matrices for mass spectrometric analysis of various biomolecules based on organic matrix-free laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LDI-TOF-MS). Au NSs provide high efficiency and versatility in LDI-TOF-MS analysis based on their well-established synthesis and surface functionalization, large surface area, high laser absorption capacity, and photothermal conversion efficiency. Therefore, Au NSs based LDI-TOF-MS can be a facile, functional, and efficient analytical method for important small biomolecules owing to its simple preparation, rapid analysis, salt-tolerance, signal reproducibility, and quantitative analysis. This review chronologically summarizes the important advance of Au NSs-based LDI-TOF-MS platforms in terms of in-depth mechanism, signal enhancement, quantitative analysis, and disease diagnosis.

  • The effects of operating conditions such as benzene concentration, nitrogen flow rate, steam flow rate, and bed temperature on TSA process were experimentally investigated as a potential VOC removal technology using two kinds of beds packed with activated carbon and zeolite 13X. The TSA cycle studied was composed of the adsorption step, steam desorption step, and drying and cooling step. At 2% benzene concentration, the total adsorption amounts of zeolite 13X and activated carbon were 4.44 g and 3.65 g, respectively. Since the zeolite 13X has a larger packing density than that of the activated carbon, the larger benzene amount could be adsorbed in a single cycle. Increasing the water vapor flow rate to 75 g/hr at 2% benzene concentration reduced the desorption time from 1 hr to a maximum of 33 min. If the desorption time is shortened, the drying and cooling step period can be relatively increased. Accordingly, the steam removal and bed cooling could be sufficiently performed. The desorption amounts increased with the increase of the bed temperature. However, the energy consumption increased while the desorption amount was almost constant above $150^{\circ}C$. In the continuous cycle process, when the amount of remained benzene at the completion of the regeneration step increased, it might cause a decrease in the working capacity of the adsorbent. The continuous cycle process experiment for zeolite 13X showed that the amount of remained benzene at the end of regeneration step maintained a constant value after the fourth cycle.

  • Ionic liquids with halide anions were prepared and the dependency of halide anions on the $SO_2$ solubility of ILs was investigated. The study shows that the $SO_2$ solubility of ionic liquids lies in the range 1.91~2.22 $SO_2$/ILs mol ratio. $SO_2$ solubility in ionic liquids with varying halide anions follows the order Br > Cl > I. Theoretical investigation was also conducted at the B3LYP level using the Gaussian 03 program. From the theoretical consideration of the interaction between $SO_2$ and [EMIm]X (where X = Cl, Br, and I), it has been proposed that primary interaction of halide occurs with $C_2$-H of the imidazolium and S of $SO_2$. Experimental results further shows that the absorption and desorption process of $SO_2$ in ILs was reversible by the three cycles of the absorption at $50^{\circ}C$ and desorption at $140^{\circ}C$. The reversibility of $SO_2$ absorption was confirmed by FT-IR studies.
