Simplified equations for Vierendeel design calculations of composite beams with web openings

  • Composite beams with web openings are vulnerable to Vierendeel bending failure. The available methods provide quite conservative estimates of Vierendeel bending resistance. An alternative design method to compute the resistance was proposed in this study, based on quadratic nonlinear interactions of normalized shear force, axial force and Vierendeel bending moment. The interactions of the top and bottom Tee section must satisfy mutual conditions to prevent the Vierendeel failure. The normalized shear force and Vierendeel bending moment of the composite part were used instead in the top Tee interaction. The top Tee axial force was computed based on force equilibrium. Based on a rigid-plastic model, the composite resistance is estimated using an effective slab width of the vertical shear resistance. On using the proposed method, nonlinear reductions due to shear loads and axial forces are not required, in contrast to prior methods. The proposed method was validated against experiments from literature. The method limitations and accuracy as well as the Vierendeel behavior were investigated by finite element simulations, with varied composite beam parameters. The proposed design loads are less conservative than earlier estimates and deviate less from the simulations.

  • Thermal design is required with considering thermal stability to verify the reliability of electric power device with using IGBT. Numerical analysis is performed to analyzed the change in thermal resistance with respect to the various thermal density of heating element. Correlations between thermal resistance and heat generation density are established. With using these correlations, performance curve is composed with respect to the change in thermal resistance of cooling conditions for natural convection and forced convection. Thermal fatigue is occurred at the Inside and outside of IGBT by repeated heat load. The crack is occurred between base plate and ceramic substrate for the inside. When the crack length is 4mm, the failure is occurred. Therefore, Thermal design method considering thermal density, thermal fatigue resistance is presented on this study and it is expected to thermal design with considering life prediction.

Hull form design for resistance minimization of small-scale LNG bunkering vessels using numerical simulation

  • This paper aims to provide the most useful method of determining an optimum LCB position and design direction of fore- and aft-body hull shape for a SLBV. It is known that the SLBV has a lower length-to-beam ratio, larger Cb and simpler stern shape designed for the installation of azimuth thrusters comparing to those of conventional LNG carriers. Due to these specific particulars of SLBV, the optimum LCB position was very different to that of conventional LNG carrier. And various approaches were applied to determine the optimum fore- and aft-body hull shape. The design direction for the optimum hull-form was evaluated as the minimization of the total resistance which includes the wave-making resistance and form-drag with numerical simulation.

Reliability analysis of circular tunnel with consideration of the strength limit state

  • Probability-based design codes have been developed to sufficiently confirm the safety level of structures. One of the most acceptable probability-based approaches is Load Resistance Factor Design (LRFD), which measures the safety level of the structures in terms of the reliability index. The main contribution of this paper is to calibrate the load and resistance factors of the design code for tunnels. The load and resistance factors are calculated using the available statistical models and probability-based procedures. The major steps include selection of representative structures, consideration of the limit state functions, calculation of reliability for the selected structures, selection of the target reliability index and calculation of load factors and resistance factors. The load and resistance models are reviewed. Statistical models of resistance (load carrying capacity) are summarized for strength limit state in bending, shear and compression. The reliability indices are calculated for several segments of a selected circular tunnel designed according to the tunnel manual report (Tunnel Manual). The novelty of this paper is the selection of the target reliability. In doing so, the uniform spectrum of reliability indices is proposed based on the probability paper. The final recommendation is proposed based on the closeness to the target reliability index.

  • 소파블록 피복제 제체의 한계상태설계법 개발을 위해 하중저항계수 보정을 수행하였다. 실제 시공된 소파블록 피복제 제체의 설계자료를 분석하여 신뢰성해석을 수행하였으며 목표신뢰성지수에 따른 부분안전계수와 하중, 저항계수를 차례로 산정하였다. 최적화기법을 통해 한계상태설계법 개발을 위한 하중계수와 저항계수를 도출하였다. 최종 하중저항계수를 이용하여 방파제를 재설계하였으며 목표수준의 신뢰성지수를 상회하는지 검증하였다. 해외기준의 하중저항계수와 본 연구에서 구한 하중저항계수를 비교하였다.

CFD Application for Prediction of Ship Added Resistance in Waves

  • This paper deals with the added resistance of a ship in waves using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The ship added resistance is one of the key considerations in the design of energy-efficient ship. In this study, the added resistance of a LNG carrier in head waves is computed using a CFD code to consider the nonlinearity and the viscous effects. The unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equation (RANS) is numerically solved and the volume of fluid (VOF) approach is used to simulate the free surface flows. The length of incident wave varies from half the ship length to twice the ship length. To investigate the nonlinearity effect, both the linear wave condition and the nonlinear wave condition are considered. The heave and pitch motions are calculated along with the added resistance, and the wave contours are obtained. Grid convergence test is conducted thoroughly to achieve the converged motion and resistance values. The calculated results are compared and validated with experimental data.

  • A high temperature superconducting(HTS) power cable is available for high capacity current in normal condition. But resistance was appeared to operate unbalance load by thermal current characteristic. This characteristic of HTS power cable used to design for unstated condition. And than, It used to understand and analyze characteristic of power cable thermal and critical current. This study appeared that quench resistance reason from shield and former current rise to superconductor(SC) current. The resistance of SC occurred that the cable temperature rise to fault current after decreased critical current. The quench resistance of SC increased in temperature or decreased in critical current. So the quench resistance of SC correlated with resistance of both shield and former current. It need to sufficiently influenced the parameters of HTS cable design.

국내 연안어선의 저항 최소화 선형설계에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Hull Form Design with Minimum Resistance for Domestic Coastal Fishing Boats)

  • In this study the hull form design with minimum resistance of domestic coastal fishing boat using a computer design procedure is carried out. The target boat is G/T 4.99 ton class fishing boat. which is one of the most popular boat in the coastal sea. For the task, the design parameters needed in preliminary stage are selected or determined from the existing boat. which has excellent resistances characteristics. In the EHP estimation during the design procedure, the main objective function is the hull resistance, and the initial hull forms before the optimization are selected from the boats that are in operation now. The EHP values from the hull after optimization process are also compared with those of the original hull to confirm its effect. Also, optimizing is investigated for the hull form to reestimate such factors as stability, laboring environment for the best design. it is expected that the results of this study here can be effectively used to improve the present design status of domestic small fishing boats.

  • Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the reason why smartphone users do not use mobile banking based on Status Quo Bias and to find out whether there is a difference between passive resistance and active resistance. Design/methodology/approach This study made a design of the research model based on Status Quo Bias. SPSS 23.0 and SmartPLS 2.0 were used for the analysis. Multiple group analysis was performed to identify differences between groups. Findings According to the empirical analysis result, this study confirmed that inertia and perceived risk affected smartphone users who do not use mobile banking. According to the type of resistance, the active resistance group(64.2%) was more than the passive resistance group(35.8%), and it was confirmed that there was a difference in the reasons for not using mobile banking between passive and active resistance group. That is, the greatest difference between passive and active resistance groups was found to be perceived risk, which is an assessment of risk.

  • Based on the developments of the reliability-based steel structural analysis and design as well as the extending knowledgy on the probabilitic characteristics of loading and resistance the probability based design criteria have been successful Iy developed for many students. The existing design codes, which are genarally based on the structural theory and certain engineering experience, do not realistically consider the uncertainties of loads and resistance and the basic reliability concepts. It is recognized to develope the design criteria by ETCM(Expected Total cost Minimization). In this study, therefore, the proper probability based design criteria (Optimum load and resistance factor design formats ) has been developed based on the safety levels observed from calibration Iii th existing standards, which applies to the ultimate limit states of steel structural members.
