  • Human-centric lighting (HCL) aims to enhance well-being and performance by tailoring lighting to human needs. However, LED flicker-rapid brightness changes-remains a critical issue, causing discomfort and reduced productivity. This paper addresses flicker problems in living and industrial spaces with LED lighting. We propose solutions to mitigate flicker by examining causes like power supply variations and LED driver design. Techniques such as high-quality LED drivers, advanced dimming methods, and digital control systems are explored. Our findings show these techniques can significantly reduce flicker, achieving less than 1% flicker performance while meeting HCL's diverse requirements. Implementing flicker-free lighting in residential spaces enhances comfort and reduces eye strain, while in industrial settings, it improves productivity and safety. This paper emphasizes the importance of control circuits that maintain sub-1% flicker performance while integrating various HCL solutions, enhancing indoor lighting quality, and promoting better health and performance.

  • The office is an excellent candidate for implementing daylighting techniques because of the relatively high electric lighting power densities and long daytime use pattern. The quantity of light available for a space can be translated in term of the amount of energy savings through a process of a building energy simulation. To get significant energy savings in general illumination, the electric lighting system must be incorporated with a daylight - activated dimmer control. A prototype configuration of an office interior has been established and the integration between the building envelope and lighting and HVAC systems is evaluated based on computer modeling of a lighting control facility. First of all, an energy-efficient luminaire system is designed for both a totally open-plan office interior and a partitioned office. A lighting design and analysis program, Lumen-Micro 2000 predicts the optimal layout of a conventional fluorescent lighting fixture to meet the designed lighting level and calculates unit power density, which translates the demanded amount of electric lighting energy. A dimming control system integrated with the contribution of daylighting has been applied to the operating of the artificial lighting. Annual cooling load due to lighting and the projecting saving amount of cooling load due to daylighting under overcast diffuse sky are evaluated by a computer software, ENER-Win. In brief, the results from building energy simulation with measured daylight illumination levels and the performance of lighting control system indicate that daylighting can save over 70 percent of the required energy for general illumination in the perimeter zones through the year. A 25 % of electric energy for cooling may be saved by dimming and turning off the luminaires in the perimeter zones.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness in the lighting performance of mixed type light-shelf, by comparing and analyzing the internal light-shelf, external light-shelf, and mixed-type light-shelf. The performance of light-shelf was evaluated according to the angle of light-shelf at summer solstice, winter solstice, vernal equinox, and autumn equinox. The comparative analysis between the internal light-shelf, external light-shelf, and mixed-type light-shelf was carried out using the performance evaluation and analysis method. The result of performance evaluation is shown as follows. The mixed type light-shelf showed the highest lighting performance all at summer solstice, winter solstice, vernal equinox, and autumn equinox, followed by the external light-shelf and the internal light-shelf in the same order. The mixed type light-shelf was the most favorable for bringing daylight to indoors by adjusting the angle of light-shelf, and it also showed the highest lighting performance in terms of uniformity ratio of illumination which indicates the quality of light.

  • Light was the symbol of the city's prosperity and culture. People can walk around the city at the night time with safe. Now light is used with beauty and function at the same time. This study is the example how to draw the lighting design concept in specific city and district based on the citizen-minded survey. The citizen-minded survey makes a new chance taking the goodness and characteristics from local city specially and select the site for applying the specific opinion and requirement in the city. The expression of design concept on night landscape design gives the fresh image to the city during the night time. Because people feel the free and dynamic mood in the night landscape lighting, it is very important to set and express the design concept on night landscape design. The result of this study was applied in the Daegu city. In particular, the distribution complex's night landscape lighting in the Daegu was designed with specific concept expression from the citizen-minded survey. Making and expressing the design concept on night landscape design is basic for unity and diversity in the city.

  • On the electricity consumption in Korea, the lighting sector takes about 17% of annual total electricity consumptions. In the midst of higher interests on energy conservation measures, design and choice of energy-saving lighting fixtures have been more important. With growth of technology-intensive industries like advanced material, semiconductor, and biotechnology from the 1980s, needs for clean room and thus illumination at clean rooms have been increased. In this paper, development, specification, and features of a Teardrop LED(hereinafter TD LED) lighting fixture as replacement of Teardrop florescent lighting one that has been popularly installed at clean rooms were presented. Also we performed the economic analysis of return on investment(ROI) about energy savings by the installation of the TD LED lighting fixture at a new-built clean room. The economic analysis showed that the new-developed TD LED lighting fixture would be able to withdraw the initial installation cost within 4 years. Lastly, improvement directions and development plans of the next TD LED lighting fixture for wider applications at clean rooms were described.

  • Unlike traditional lightings, LED lighting is one of objects that sends user an emotional segments through brightness control from various color temperature and dimming control. Also, within present interior lighting environment, emotional researches about traditional fluorescent lamp and newly implemented LED lighting environment are in active progress. Despite the fact adjectives describing emotions and scale modeling have been repeatedly used in many cases for a long time, there seems to be a lack of results in reliability, and there is a limitation for applying into actual lighting design. The purpose of this study is to construct an actual sized test-bed, which is used to draw out one's emotional words of behavior patterns from inner emotional experiences about lighting environment in an office space. Also, having fluorescent lamp and LED lighting as the main test subjects, we have tested emotional parts according to the changes of color temperature and adjective vocabularies chosen from user's action, and we have compared and analyzed the drawn out data. • This paper describes the experiments to examine the sense of continuity produced by lighting between physically separated spaces. Tolerable limits of illuminance were measured for providing a sense of continuity between two rooms connected by a window. In the experiments the illuminance and color of lighting of the subjects room were changed while those of the other room were kept constant. The results show that the observers could certainly determine the range of optimum illuminance for them to recognize continuity, and the variance of the results between observers is very small. Moreover, the tolerable range of illuminance was almost constant as far as the color difference was less than some critical value. This finding would be helpful in designing a lighting system for providing a sense of continuity.
