  • This study was conducted to derive optimal design floods by Generalized Extreme-value(GEV) distribution for the annual maximum series at ten watersheds along Han, Nagdong, Geum, Yeongsan and Seomjin river systems. Adequacy for the analysis of flood data used in this study was established by the tests of Independence, Homogeneity, detection of Outliers. L-coefficient of variation, L-skewness and L-kurtosis were calculated by L-moment ratio respectively. Parameters were estimated by the Methods of Moments and L-Moments. Design floods obtained by Methods of Moments and L-Moments using different methods for plotting positions in GEV distribution were compared by the relative mean and relative absolute error. It was found that design floods derived by the method of L-moments using weibull plotting position formula in GEV distribution are much closer to those of the observed data in comparison with those obtained by method of moments using different formulas for plotting positions in view of relative mean and relative absolute error.

  • Photometric analysis is essential process to make design for 300W Electrodeless flood lighting fixture. But lighting source's unusual shape makes it difficult to fix in and so we supposed two kinds of installation method to solve this matter. One is to place lamp base down and second is to put lamp base side like normal HID lamps. In result, former photometric analysis came to reach a target for similar asymmetric photometric data meanwhile we can not escape work to design complicated reflector. Second analysis reached conclusion that it is more simplified reflector than former. On its lighting fixture's design, the former reflector is new and attractive breaking fixed idea but the latter is only staying in the range of existing HID lighting design.

  • For performance analysis of flood prevention projects, this study performed simulation (SWMM) for the five sites where the projects have been completed. The models were constructed using watershed and sewer information of the project sites and were verified using flood records in the past to improve accuracy. In this simulation, the design rainfall data (probability 30~50 years) and the rainfall data in the summer of 2017 were applied. When the design rainfall data was applied to the models, simulation results presented that all the sites were flooded before the projects, but after the projects all the sites were not flooded due to improve discharge capacity. And when the rainfall data in the summer of 2017 was applied to the models, simulation results presented that all the sites were flooded before the projects, but after the projects any sites did not occur flooding in this summer. So if the projects had not been completed, all the sites might be flooded in the summer of 2017. These effects were analyzed as the improvement of discharge capacity due to rehabilitation of sewer, construction of underground tunnel and pumping station, etc. As the results, ratio of sewer that water depth exceed diameter reduced from 52.3~75.8% to 17.1~39.8%.

  • This research is on the methodology of flood risk assessment using flooding characteristic values. Necessity of design magnitude for flood control considering floods was judged by plotting peak flow with respect to frequency and duration, and flooding magnitude was defined with 6 flooding characteristic values which were proposed to be significant factors when assessing flooding magnitude. Precipitation data used in the assessment modeling were applied by combining all the possible precipitation events. After overlapping the simulated results with precipitation matrix by flooding characteristic values, contour map was drawn, and Flooding characteristic contour graph for possible rainfall events were suggested in respect of all possible precipitation. Flooding characteristic contour graph for possible rainfall events was confirmed that reducing of damage magnitude of each flood characteristic value was figured out easily. The flood risk assessment methods suggested in this study would be a good reference for urban drainage system design, which only focuses on pipe conduit.

  • Recently, a heavy rainfall under climate change causes the flood exceeded river's conveyance. Flood control methods under the limited river width are the increase of embankment, the construction of storage pockets and diversion channel, the dredging of river bed. Hwasun flood control reservoir of washland is designed as the storage pockets and the regulating gate for the control of water level. In this study, the propriety of design was investigated through hydraulic experiments for the circumstances to exclude the constant flood discharge during operation period. In the results, the over flow rate of side weir exceeded the flow of design and indicated to be able to discharge the designed flow in the regulating gate opened 1.1 m. The high velocity 7.1 m/s behind the gate has investigated to reduce under 3.3 m/s by the baffle block.

  • Urban development is a cause of expansion of impervious area. A permanent storage is operated as a method of reducing runoff of watershed. The purpose of study is to propose reasonable choice of simulation model for rainfall-runoff in the prior review system on disaster effect. First, we indicated problem about concentration time choice in the flood simulation. To test the adequacy of a rainfall-runoff simulation model, We analyzed characteristics of rainfall-runoff about urban and natural watersheds. A simulation model was calibrated with the storm of july 7 to July 9 in 2009. From the result, we proposed that SWMM and kinematic wave method as the flood simulation models for urban and natural watersheds. A simulation model and design method of a permanent storage for flood that is proposed in this study will be useful for practical design of flood simulation. The hydrologic analysis method of the study can be used for capacity evaluation of permanent storage plan.

  • Where no records are available at a site, a preliminary estimate may be made from relations between floods and catchment chatacteristics. A number of these chatacteristics were chosen for testing and were measured for those catchments where mean annual flood estimates were available. Although the improvement using extended data in regression of flood estimates on catchment characteristics was small, this may be due to the limitations of the regression model. When an individual short term record is to be extended, more detailed attention can be given; an example is presented of the technique which should be adopted in practice, particularly when a short term record covers a period which is known to be biassed. A method of extending the peaks over a threshold series is presented with a numerical example. The extension of records directly from rainfall by means of a conceptual model is discussed, although the application of such methods is likely to be limited by lack of recording raingauge information. Methods of combining information from various sources are discussed in terms of information from catchment characteristics supplemented by records. but are generally applicable to different sources of information. The application of this technique to estimating the probable maximum flood requires more conservative assumptions about the antecedent condition, storm profile and unit hydrograph. It is suggested that the profile and catchment wetness index at the start of the design duration should be based on the assumption that the estimated maximum rainfall occurs in all durations centered on the storm peak.

  • This study aims to estimate the failure probability of concrete gravity dams for their risk analysis under flood situation. To the end, failure modes of concrete gravity dams and their limit state functions are proposed based on numerous review of domestic and international literatures on the dam failure cases and design standards. Three failure modes are proposed: overturning, sliding, and overstress. Based on the failure modes the limit state functions, the failure probability is assessed for a weir section and a non-weir section of a dam in Korea. As water level is rising from operational condition to extreme flood condition, the failure probability is found to be raised up to the warning condition, especially for overturning mode at the non-weir section. The result can be used to reduce the risk of the dam by random environmental variables under possible flood situation.

  • A modeling system is constructed by integrating an one-dimensional unsteady flow simulation model and a hydrologic model to simulate flood flows in drainage channel networks of paddy field districts. The modeling system's applicability is validated by simulating flood discharges from a paddy field district, which consists of nine paddy fields and one drainage channel. The simulation results are in good agreement with the observed. Particularly, in the verification stage, the relative errors of peak flows and peak depths between the observed and simulated hydrographs range 8.96 to 10.26 % and -10.26 to 2.97 %, respectively. The modeling system's capability is compared with that of a water balance equation-based model; it is revealed that the modeling system's accuracy is superior to the other model. In addition, the simulations of flood discharges from large-sized paddy fields through drainage channels show that the flood discharge patterns are affected by drainage outlet management for paddy fields and physical characteristics of the drainage channels. Finally, it is concluded that to efficiently design drainage channel networks, it is necessary to analyze the results from simulating flood discharges of the drainage channel networks according to their physical characteristics and connectivities.

  • As global warming has accelerated to weather in recent years, and The frequent floods are creating heavy rains and typhoons followed by considerable damage in Jeju. This study estimated design flood discharges and flood stage in Jeju, considering climate change in connection with RCP scenario, the 5th IPCC Report recently published. It also analyzed the period which might be subject to the risk of flooding in downstream of Oedo Stream. As a result, it has analyzed that there might be a risk of flooding when there were 80 years or more rainfall events in 35 years that rainfall would have increased by 10%, 69 years that 100 years or more heavy rain and rainfall would have increased by 20%, and 104 years that 100 years or more heavy rain and rainfall would have increased by 20%. It is expected that this study results of rainfall increasing trend caused by climate change will be helpful to minimize the damage of floods which will secure the future of Jeju.
