  • The study performed an actual fire experiment in order to propose the heat release rate of automobile that is the most basic architectural element for the fire safety design in a tunnel, whose importance has been recognized as the underground traffic tunnels are planned in Korean metropolitan cities. The heat release rate of a van is measured by the large scale calorimeter, in which the law of oxygen consumption is applied, and the fire expansion characteristics in a tunnel by placing two passenger cars nearby one another in the tunnel. As the results, the heat release rate of the van was revealed to be 5.9 MW, and carbon monoxide was emitted 482 ppm at a maximum. In case of two passenger car experiment for the fire expansion characteristics, the adjacent car was ignited about 3 minutes 30 seconds after the fire occurrence, and the complete fire was developed after 15 minutes. The maximum heat release was 9 MW. The results from the actual fire experiment can be an important input data for future quantitative analysis as well as an element applicable to a tunnel disaster preventive equipment design.

  • This study is a preparation for the application of FSA (Formal Safety Assessment) to the fire safety of ships. FSA is the new-fashioned methodology proposed to prevent ships from the accidents. To make a base of the fire safety assessment about ship's fire protection design and Classification Society rule, statistical informations for the fire safety engineering are investigated. From results, the necessity of new criterion for ship's fire safety design, the need to study the human behavior in the evacuation from fire, and the development of new fire progress model considering special situations in ships are acknowledged.

  • The performance based design in fire detection system, the effect of high airflow and dilution of smoke produced in any fire situation serve to increase the response time of point-type smoke detectors. This study investigated the smoke density of ceiling, under the air stream and in normal status when fire type is smoldering fires. The result of study, smoke generated in the fire was swept away from nearby spot type smoke detector which failed to actuate because dispersed in diluted form around the room. The concept of performance based design in fire detection system of protected area influenced by high airflow provided the need of active fire detection system such as air sampling smoke detection system.

  • Some major properties such as a heat release rate have been measured experimentally for the validation of fire model and the clarification of fire phenomena as the study is more rigorous recently. Although the reduced-scale experiment also provides the basic data and the physical understanding in fire study, it is not enough to explain real fire problem directly because there is no exact analogy theory between a real fire and the reduced scale model. Therefore, large cone calorimeter have been built and used in a few foreign countries for the measurement of large scale fire. This paper addressed the theoretical background and the description of key features in the design of the facility. It will be a useful guide for implementation of the large scale cone calorimeter in the future.

  • Even though the sprinkler system is a essential fire suppression system, the design engineers do not fully understand the concept of design area which sprinklers operate. They frequently made a mistake to form design area and calculate it. The shape of design area is a square or a rectangle which branch side line is a little longer than the cross main side. NFPA demands to lengthen the branch side to 1.2 times than the cross main side and FM demands 1.4 times. The longer the branch side at the same design area is, the bigger the water quantity and pressure is. At the results of hydraulic calculation of design areas, when the branch side is longer 1.2 times, the water quantity became 4.6% bigger than exact square and the pressure came to 4.67% bigger. When it is longer 1.4 times, the water quantity and the pressure are bigger 7.52%, 14.51%. Therefore, the sprinkler design engineers should follow the general rule of design area, exact square or rectangle which length along the branch line is a little longer than length along the cross main, to design more stable system.

  • Numerical investigation has been performed to simulate the spray characteristics in mist-spray fire suppression nozzles in sense of design parameters. Two key shape factors in nozzle orifices. i.e. diameter and length are chosen as simulation parameters. Commercial softwares, FLUENT and FDS with the proper modelings were applied as numerical tools. Main performances of nozzles, i.e., K-factors, spray angles, droplet size, jet velocities and fire suppression time are analyzed for each parameter to find optimal design conditions.

  • Fire accident in tunnel is one of the most critical railway accidents, together with overturning of train by derailment and train crash. Tunnel structures contribute to minimize the cost and time of transport, but in case of railway fire accident occurring bring serious damages of human life caused by narrowness of shelter, poisonous smoke and high temperature raised at the inside of tunnel. For that reason, at the beginning of plan of tunnel, the optimum design for rescue of passengers is needed. For the detail and most suitable design for rescue of passengers, many tunnel designer substituted simulation program for mock examination by its high cost and effort. In this study, simulation program techniques, such as Fluent and Simulex, are applied for verifying the rescue design of passengers reduced the risk when fire accident occurred at tunnel utilizing of case study for planned railway tunnels shows 1,245m length in Iksan-Sili area.

  • A performance-based design of smoke management systems for semiconductor fabrication facilities is described in this paper. The example of one such facility is discussed. Performance criteria for smoke control systems were established, effective smoke removal system features were identified and optimal system exhaust capacity requirements were developed by applying engineering tools including Fire Dynamic Simulator model. Considering the fact that the absence of relevant design guide, codes for consensus standards for semiconductor smoke design in Korea and United States this performance based approach can and should be applied to other fabrication facilities designs.

  • In this paper, we propose how to design a fire control system main control board for individual combat weapons using a small and low power processor. To design an electric board of small weapon systems, Size and power consumption are very important factors. We solved the problem using selection of an adaptive processor, introduction of MicroChipPackaging method, and separate design of a main board Also we applied these methods to make the fire control system for small arms.

  • In the present study, a Cook Book method and a Static System Analysis method were compared with each other on the basis of a seismic design criteria of fire-fighting facilities and analyzed. The Cook Book method is analyzed by dividing a pipeline in each same section. In this method, a stress analysis is not possible except for the section analyzed in such a way that a brace is designed according to the weight of pipe, water and pipe fitting. To the contrary, in case of the Static System Analysis method, the stress analysis for the whole pipeline can be performed because the whole pipeline is regarded as a single structure. For the fatal stress values locally generated, it is necessary to actively perform a pipeline analysis by installing a device capable of locally relieving the stress of the pipeline. In Korea, only the Cook Book method is provided as the seismic design criteria of fire-fighting facilities, which causes many problems with diversification of seismic design. Thus, it is necessary to apply the seismic design method of the pipeline by using various kinds of engineered Static System Analysis methods.
