  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the BI elements of expression for four brand's experience spaces in Korea and propose a direction for improvements for such spaces. I started with the theoretical background of nowadays brand marketing and experiential BI elements through literature researches, and then researched the property of spatial expressions to analyze BI elements. Based on this research, I analyzed four domestic brand experience spaces. As a result, brand experience spaces must clearly express the brand image of the company through various contents and situations to effectively communicate and improve BI expressions. Also, they need long-term experience contents for sustained relationships rather than short-term experiences. I expect this study will be a good resource for BI expression research in brand experience spaces. I also believe that this study can guide other studies about BI expression in other fields.

  • The objective of this study was to analyze the characteristics of traditionality expressions at modernized Chinese restaurant in Hong Kong. As a case study, the study examined 12 modernized Chinese restaurants in Hong Kong. The gathered data were categorized and examined according to the ways of traditionality expressions, which included reproduction, transformation, and reinterpretation of traditional components. Each of the components was measured for the amount of traditional or modernity expression on a five-point scale. The five-point scoring system put an emphasis on tradition; 1 point was given to principal modernity(modernity: 90-100% + tradition: 0-10%), 2 points were given to principal modernity + auxiliary tradition(modernity: 70-90% + tradition: 10-30%), 3 points were given to the same ratio between tradition and modernity(modernity: 40-60% + tradition: 40-60%), 4 points were given to principal tradition + auxiliary modernity(modernity: 10-30% + tradition: 70-90%), and 5 points were given to principal tradition(modernity: 0-10% + tradition: 90-100%). The analysis performed according to those criteria and methodologies led to the following findings and conclusions: TM style, in which modernity was principal, usually did transformation and reinterpretation of traditionality. As for the design attributes of the styles, the TM style, they processed a majority of the spatial components as modern or reinterpretation of traditionality, which would be easily considered to be modern without careful observation, and applied a small amount of direct reproduction or transformation, which gives out a direct hint at traditionality, to attract more attention. Many of the spatial components did not express traditionality directly, expressing it indirectly or metaphorically. Traditionality was expressed in a small number of the spatial components, thus serving as a focus or impact point in the given space.

  • In this paper, using an adjoint variable method, we develop a design sensitivity analysis (DSA) method applicable to heat conduction problems in steady state. Also, a topology design optimization method is developed using the developed DSA method. Design sensitivity expressions with respect to the thermal conductivity are derived. Since the already factorized system matrix is utilized to obtain the adjoint solution, the cost for the sensitivity computation is trivial. For the topology design optimization, the design variables are parameterized into normalized bulk material densities. The objective function and constraint are the thermal compliance of structures and allowable material volume, respectively. Through several numerical examples, the developed DSA method is verified to yield very accurate sensitivity results compared with finite difference ones, requiring less than 0.3% of CPU time far the finite differencing. Also, the topology optimization yields physical meaningful results.

  • Before the information revolution, written languages used to be our major communication method, but with development of various types of mass media technologies the role of visual images are becoming more and more essential. Computer which is one of the most popular information medias of today has influenced our lives in many ways including the way we communicate through icons. The current study first explores Peirce's semiotic theory and then accordingly Investigates programs, concepts and expressions of iconic designs. Lastly, analyze modern iconic architectural design examples by using the theoretical framework in order to define concepts of semiotic and its relationship architectural design applications as design methods.

  • In this paper A methode for design of hybrid-ring couplers having sections of lenth λ/n is proposed. Assuming only one - axis symmitry and isolation of output arms general expressions for the scattering parameters are obtained. The new design method using λ/n sections for 3 dB couplers is derived, . The calculated frequency reponse of the new design has been compared with that of conventional ones, . A new design using λ/5 section and having an overall length 13λ/10 is found to be superior to the 7λ/6 design is expected to have a low insertion loss by virtue of its shorter length.

  • In cyberspace based on internet, users constitute communities and interact one another. Avatar means not only the other self but also the 'another being' that describes oneself in the cyberspace. If user's avatar shows expressive faces and behaves according to his thinking and emotion, he will have a feel of reality much more in the cyberspace. If avatar's countenances can be animated by just typing characters in avatar-based chat communication, the user is able to express his emotions more effectively. In this study, emotion-expressing vocabulary is analyzed and classified. Emotion-expressing vocabulary is essential to develop self-reactive avatar system in which avatar's countenances are automatically converted according to the words typed by users at chat. The results are as follows; First, emotion-expressing vocabulary selected out of Korean adjectives and intransitive verbs is made up of 209 words and is classified into 25 groups. Second, there are only 2 groups out of the 25 groups for positive expressions and others are for negative expressions. Therefore, negative expressions are more abundant than positive expressions in Korean vocabulary. Third, avatar's countenances are modelled according to the 25 groups by using the Quantification Method 3. The result shows that the emotion-expressing vocabulary has dose relations with avatar's countenances and is useful to communicate users' emotions. However, this study has some limits, in that Korean linguistical structure - the whole meaning of context - cannot be interpreted quantitatively.

  • Using higher order Mindlin plates and piezoelectric materials, eigenvalue problems are considered. Since piezoelectric crystal resonators produce a proper amount of electric signal for a thickness-shear frequency, the objective is to decouple the thickness-shear mode from the others. Design variables are the bulk material densities corresponding to the mass of masking plates for electrodes. The design sensitivity expressions for the thickness-shear frequency and mode shape vector are derived using direct differentiation method(DDM). Using the developed design sensitivity analysis (DSA) method, we formulate a topology optimization problem whose objective function is to maximize the thickness-shear component of strain energy density at the thickness-shear mode. Constraints are the allowable volume and area of masking plate. Numerical examples show that the optimal design yields an improved mode shape and thickness-shear energy.

  • In this paper, a continuum-based design sensitivity analysis (DSA) method is developed for the weakly coupled thermo-elasticity problems. The temperature and displacement fields are described in a common domain. Boundary value problems such as an equilibrium equation and a heat conduction equation in steady state are considered. The direct differentiation method of continuum-based DSA is employed to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of sensitivity computation. We derive design sensitivity expressions with respect to thermal conductivity in heat conduction problem and Young's modulus in equilibrium equation. The sensitivities are evaluated using the finite element method. The obtained analytical sensitivities are compared with the finite differencing to yield very accurate results. Extensive developments of this method are useful and applicable for the optimal design problems incorporating welding and thermal deformation problems.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the political and social statements through fashion design, by comparing with more activated statements in the general design area. To achieve this, the documentary study and practical case study have been executed. First of all, the meaning of design politics was defined and the cases of design practice of political and social statements were reviewed and classified historically. Traditionally, designs have been inextricably linked with political authorities and ideologies. As propaganda, it has been used for power authority to seize power and maintain dominance. On the contrary, they could be an instrument to resist and criticize against contemporary power authority and dominant. Next, the political and social statements were traced historically through fashion design on the basis of the two previously reviewed categories. And then, comparing political and social statements between design and fashion design, the contents and ways of their expressions were similar. In design, there were more various ways when the designers were leading collective behavior, but in fashion design, there were more leading voices of socio-political organizations and resistant counter culture groups. Now, new trends are rising constantly where individual designers' creations express many different socio-political beliefs. This study which inquires designers' political and social involvement will be helpful in making people rethink the social role of fashion design and encouraging conscious fashion design activism.
