  • Genetic Algorithms have been successfully applied to various problems (for example, engineering design problems with a mix of continuous, integer and discrete design variables) that could not have been readily solved with traditional computational techniques. But, several problems for which conventional Genetic Algorithms are ill defined are premature convergence of solution and application of exterior penalty function. Therefore, we developed an Improved Genetic Algorithms (IGAs) to solve above two problems. As a case study, IGAs is applied to several nonlinear optimization problems and it is proved that this algorithm is very useful and efficient in comparison with traditional methods and conventional Genetic Algorithm.

  • Kim et al. (2002) developed public use SAS-based software for two-way stratification design, which is called SOCSLP We describe the details of a new approach implemented using SOCSLP and key differences between the approach and the sampling schemes of Sitter and Skinner (1994) and Winkler (2001). In addition, a numerical example is given to compare those methods with respect to the probabilities of selecting sample arrays.

  • Currently, the design methods for coping of concrete piers predict over-reinforcements. In this study comparison and analysis of internal and external design codes is performed. Non-linear analysis using FEA and strut-tie model was done to reduce reinforcements embedded in coping of concrete piers.

  • This paper presents two methods of designing a Broadband Impedance Matching (BIM) circuit for maximizing a power line communication (PLC) equipment (or Modem) signal injection into its load at any power line connection port. This optimal (BIM) circuit design is achieved in two phases: Butterworth gain function and Tchebycheff gain function. According to the comparison of simulation and practical results, the performances of two gain functions on BIM are discussed.

  • Support vector learning attracts great interests in the areas of pattern classification, function approximation, and abnormality detection. In this pater, we design the controller using support vector regression which has good properties in comparison with multi-layer perceptron or radial basis function. The applicability of the presented method is illustrated via an example simulation.

  • This paper discusses issues in VLSI design and implementation of high performance datapath circuits. Of particular concern will he various types of multiplier and adder, which are fundamental to DSP operations. Performance comparison will be provided in terms of sampling speed, layout area, and in particular, power consumption, with techniques that may be applied to reduce power dissipation also suggested. As an example, a low power, high performance recursive filter achieved through bit-level pipelining technique is illustrated

  • Caliber design in bar and rod rolling depends on the designer's experience, which in general is acquired through costly trial-and-error process. As a prerequisite for developing a scientific approach to caliber design, we present a finite element model to simulate 3-D deformation of bars and rods occurring in multi-pass sequence. The results are compared with measurements obtained from POSCO for to assess the solution accuracy. The comparison shows that the simulation results agree well experiments.

  • A wide band design method of an electromagnetic wave absorber with square ferrite cylinders in the second layer, which has very wide band frequency characteristics, is proposed and discussed. A theoretical model using the equivalent material constants method is also evaluated and proposed for its accuracy by comparison with Hashin-Shtrikman formulas. Based on the developed model, wide band electromagnetic wave absorbers with excellent reflective frequency characteristics in the frequency range of 30MHz to 3, 690MHz were designed.
