For the structural integrity of large and complex structures such as railway vehicle, the in-field diagnosis of mechanical properties of the structures is needed, and especially, the mechanical characteristics of the weldment must be carefully evaluated. But, conventional standard testing methods having destructive procedures are not applicable to in-field assessment of mechanical property variations within weldment because they needs the limitations of specimen size and geometry. In this paper, to overcome this problems, the advanced indentation technique (AIS) is introduced for simple and non-destructive/in-field testing of weldment of industrial structures. This test measures indentation load-depth curve during indentation and analyzes the mechanical properties related to deformation and fracture. First of all, flow properties such as yield strength, tensile strength and work hardening index can be evaluated through the analysis of the deformation behavior beneath the spherical indenter. Additionally, case studies of advanced indentation techniques are introduced.
The measurement from the indentation process depends on the amount of pile-up or sink-in around the contact impressions. In this paper, finite element concept is utilized to study the pile-up and sink-in behaviour for the wide range of materials with different young's modulus, yield stresses, strain-hardening exponents and coefficient of friction values. The exact indentation model is created by using the two dimensional axisymmetrical model for simulating the spherical indentation process on the lines of Taljat and Pharr (2004) work. The result shows that during spherical indentation process the amount of pile-up is greatly influenced by the strain hardening exponents in addition to other material properties and depth of penetration. The numerical results from the finite element analysis are also validated using the exact multilinear material properties obtained from the tensile testing for the materials like mild steel, brass and aluminium.
A statistical evaluation method was proposed to evaluate mechanical properties by using small specimens and nano-indentation for irradiation study. The method is empirically based on nano-indentation which values are statistically treated. The nano-indentation in function of indentation depth (h) is expressed using the variation factor V(h). Statistical parameters of the indentation are given by histograms. Analytical and experimental relation between histograms of phase dimension distribution and parameters V(h) and G(h) is considered using the condition of additivity of phases' microhardness. The method is applied to estimate mechanical properties of irradiated materials.
The background of this study lies in he investigation of the formation mechanism of ductile mode(nkanometer-size) chips of brittle materials such as fine ceramics glass and silicon. As the first step to achieve this purpose this paper intends to observe the micro-deformation behavior of these materials in sub${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ depth indentation tests using a diamond indentor. In this study it was developed Ultra-Micro Indentation. Device using the PZT actuator. Experimentally by using the Ultra-Micro Indentation device the micro fracture behavior of the silicon wafer was investigated. It was possible that ductile-brittle transition point in ultimate surface of brittle material can be detected by adding an acoustic emission sensor system to the Ultra-Micro Indentation appartus.
The pressure drop and heat transfer of the spirally indented tubes were measured and analyzed. Eight sample tubes of indentation depth 0.4, 0.7mm and indentation pitch 10, 14, 20, 26mm were used in this experimental tests. And all the tubes have same outer diameter of 16mm, and same indentation start number of I. Air was used as the internal fluid from 10000 to 50000 for Reynolds Number. The friction factors and heat transfer coefficients have increased when indentation depths increase and indentation pitches decrease. Finally, the correlations were made between the effect of the tube geometry and characteristics of tubes for the pressure drop and heat transfer.
Apparent mechanical properties in structural components can be different from the initially designed values due to the formation of the residual stress in metal forming and welding. Therefore, the evaluation of residual stress has great importance in the reliability diagnosis of structural components. A nondestructive continuous indentation technique has been proposed to evaluate various strength concerning mechanical properties from the analysis of load-depth curve. In this study, quantitative residual stress estimation on API X65 welded joints for natural gas pipeline was performed by analyzing the variation of indentation loading curve by residual stress through a new proposed theoretical model. The residual stress from the indentation method was compared with that from the saw-cutting method.

In this work, the prior indentation theory for a bulk material is extended to an indentation theory for evaluation of thin-film material properties. We first select the optimal data acquisition location, where the strain gradient is the least and the effect of friction is negligible. A new numerical approach to the thin-film indentation technique is then proposed by examining the finite element solutions at the optimal point. With this new approach, from the load-depth curve, we obtain the values of Young's modulus, yield strength, strain-hardening exponent. The average errors of those values are less than 3, 5, 8% respectively.
