  • As the human population increases in the world, the ratio of health doctors is rapidly decreasing. Therefore, it is an urgent need to create new technologies to monitor the physical and mental health of people during their daily life. In particular, negative mental states like depression and anxiety are big problems in modern societies. Usually this happens due to stressful situations during everyday activities including work. This paper presents a machine learning approach to reliably estimating the level of human mental stress using wearable physiological sensors. And also, this paper presents an Android- and Arduino-based stress monitoring and relief system.

  • Purpose: This study was done to explore the level of life stress, depression, and suicidal ideation and to identify the associated factors of suicidal ideation (SI) among college nursing students. Method: The design of this study was a descriptive survey design using a convenience sampling. Data collection was done using self-questionnaire from 124 students in 2 universities located in Gyeonggi and Chungnam provinces. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, ANOVA, t-test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and hierarchical multiple regression. Results: Study participants reported low level of SI, depression, and life stress ($44.45{\pm}19.21$, $8.40{\pm}5.94$, $40.65{\pm}32.17$). The 53% of variance in SI was significantly explained by life stress related value (${\beta}=.41$, p<.001), life stress related to interpersonal relationship with family (${\beta}=.19$, p=.014), life stress related to interpersonal relationship with friends (${\beta}=.34$, p<.001), and depression (${\beta}=.36$, p<.001). Conclusions: The results indicate that to decrease the SI in these students, an active interest in the students is needed to lower stress levels in interpersonal relationships with family and friends, in life stress related to value, and for relief of depression. Suicide prevention programs specific to the level of life stress and depression need to be developed for nursing students.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted in order to measure fatigue as an objective index, depression and health-related quality of life of patients with COPD in daily life, to understand the correlation between them, and to present reasons for using the results clinically. Methods: This study is intended to evaluate and compare depression, the health-related quality of life of each group after measuring lactic acid levels of 39 male patients with COPD, and dividing those with measurement values than the normal value into the experimental group, and those with normal values into the control group. Results: When comparing depression between the experimental group and the control group, it was measured at 10.38 in the experimental group, and at 7.00 in the control group (p<0.05). Health-related quality of life between the experimental group and the control group was measured at 51.8 in the experimental group, and at 48.67 in the control group (p>0.05). Conclusion: According to the results described above, it appears that patients with COPD have adapted to their disease in some degree for a long period of time, and they are physically and psychologically adjusting to the fatigue they experience, in their own ways of adapting. These results imply that improving physical activity is associated with relief of fatigue and improvement of the quality of life. Thus, there is a need for developing and researching an exercise program and a physical therapy intervention for enhancement of physical activity.

  • The positive effect of percussion instruments can induce increases in self-esteem and decreases in depression in the elderly. Based on this, the content for a percussion instrument robot that the elderly can use to play music is developed. The elements of the interaction between the elderly and the robot through the robot content are extracted. Music that arouses positive memories in the elderly is selected as part of the music therapy robot content in order to relieve depression, and a scoring system for playing music is constructed. In addition, the interaction components of the robot's facial expressions, which stimulate emotions and sensitivity in the elderly, are also designed. These components enable the elderly to take an active part in using the instrument to change the robot's facial expressions, which have three degrees of emotion: neutral-happy, happy, and very happy. The robot is not only a music game machine: it also maximizes the relief of depression in the elderly through interactions with the robot that allow the elderly person to listen to what the robot plays and through the elderly person becoming involved and playing music along with the robot.
