In order to clarify the depositional environment and sea-level change at Ilsan area including Gawaji and Saemal valley plains, which is located at the right side in downstream of the Han River, boring data, radiocabon dating and diatom analysis were comprehensively investigated. As a result, the palaeogeographies fo this area altered by the transgressions and regressions after 7,000 y. BP could be restored. The high tide sea-level(mean high water level of spring tide) was arrived ca. 7,000y. BP at the valley plain and risen to ca. 5.5m at ca. 5000y. BP. Since then, the sea-level was kept up the same level to ca. 3,200 BP. The descended sea-level to ca. 2,300 BP was risen up to ca. 5.8m in ca. 1,800 y. BP. It is presumed that such a sea-level change as well as the different sediments in quantity supplied from the river basin of the valley plain could be effected to change diversely the depositional environment of the study area and eventually to the prehistoric human life.

In this study is aerial photos and UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) images were used to analyzed the characteristics of depositional landform changes in the Geum river channels before and after the opening gate of Gongju weir. Based on the depositional landform classification result, the main stream and the bare land occupied most of the area in all periods, and also found that the main stream, mid-channel island, and sand bar occupied a greater degree of area increase or decrease compared to other landforms in the classification items. As a result of analyzing the characteristics of depositional landform changes before and after the opening gate of Gongju weir, it is judged that the depositional landforms have changed due to the decreased water level of the Geum river after the opening of the weir, the summer rainy season and typhoons, river stabilization after the effluence of Daecheong dam, supply and deposition of river sediments and fixation of vegetation. The results derived from this study can be used as basic data for the study of river depositional landforms and the establishment of management and conservation plans for the landforms in river channels.
Unsan alluvial plain is the backmarsh of Seomseokcheon which is a river originated from Chilseongdae(954m) on Mts Taeback, flowing into Donghae in southern Kangreung City, Kangwon Province. The vegetation change, geomorphic develoopment and depositional environment during the late Holocene have been investigated, using the methods such as boring, pollen analysis and radiocarbon dating. Because the deposits fo the study area are mainly consisted of peat and paety sand, they contained many pollen fossils. The peat layer has been sedimented since the high sea-level periods, 3,200 y. BP, and the records of vegetation change until now has well preserved here. According to archeological researches and the results of pollen analysis in east coast of Korea, it is supposed that the prehistoric rice farming in this area has begun since ca. 1,800 y. BP.
Depositional environment off the Shihwa Dam has been studied to investigate the change of sedimentation process and the pollution. In order to understand how the sediments are distributed, polluted and modified, depositional factors have been analyzed and compared with the previous data. Study area, located off the Shihwa Dam, was surveyed to collect 25 bottom samples and 2 cores in 1996 and echo-sounding in 1997. These sediments were analyzed for the study of the global characteristics of sediment such as grain size and organic matter. Among these samples, the selected twenty surface sediments were analyzed for the comparison with their contents of metallic elements (Al, Mn, Fe, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, As). According to field and lab analysis of sediments, three sedimentological zones have been generally identified around study area; near the dam (sandy Silt), near the dike (Sand) and offshore (silty Sand) zones. Textural parameters show that the content of silt and clay is dominant near the dam excepting the dike zone of LNG Storage Base and offshore (Palmido). The total concentration of Mn, Ni, Fe, Zn and Cd in bulk sediments was increased after the construction of the dam, while the content of Mn and Cr were higher near tidal channel than in the offshore area. Meanwhile, the annual increasing pattern of some heavy metal has appeared in this area. Based on this primary study, modification of the depositional environment may be caused by the construction of the dam and LNG Storage Base. Additionally, environmental evaluation on organic/inorganic factors has been suggested for interpreting environmental changes caused by coastal development in the nearshore such as the Shihwa coastal area.

Timing of terrace formation is a key information for understanding the evolution of fluvial systems. In particular, dating strath terrace (i.e. timing of terrace abandonment) is more difficult than depositional terrace that is conventionally constrained by radiocarbon, OSL and other dating methods targeting samples within terrace deposit. Surface exposure dating utilizing cosmogenic 10Be provides more reliability because it can be applied directly to the surface of a fluvial terrace. Thus, this method has been increasingly used for alluvial deposits. As well as other geomorphic surfaces over the last decades. Some inherent conditions, however, such as post-depositional 10Be concentration (i.e. inheritance), surface erosion rate, and density change challenge the application of cosmogenic 10Be to depositional terrace surface against simple bedrock surface. Here we present the first application of 10Be depth profile dating to a thin-gravel covered strath terrace in Korea. Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) helped us in better constraining the timing of abandonment of the strath terrace, since which its surface stochastically denuded with time, causing unexpected change of 10Be production with depth. The age of the strath terrace estimated by MCS was 109 ka, ~4% older than the one (104 ka) calculated by simple depth profile dating, which yielded the best-fit surface erosion rate of 2.1 mm/ka. Our study demonstrates that the application of 10Be depth profile dating of strath terrace using MCS is more robust and reliable because it considers post-depositional change of initial conditions such as erosion rate.

Ichnology is the study of traces made by various organisms, which includes classification and description of traces, and interpretation of sedimentary process, behavior of organism and depositional environment based on traces and organism behavior. Ichnofacies, which is defined as the association of several traces related together with substrate characteristics and sedimentary processes, is closely related to depositional environment. Ichnology has been applied to sedimentology (to understand physical characteristics of depositional environment, sedimentation pattern and event bed), sequence stratigraphy (to recognize sequence boundaries and biostratigraphic discontinuities such as MFS, TSE and RSE), oil exploration (providing of many information without big cost) and palaeocology. Preliminary ichnological study on the Ganghwa intertidal flat shows that dominant ichofacies are changing with season and location, suggesting that their seasonal variation would be a good indicator to understand the seasonal change of sedimentary processes, the small- scale change of sedimentary environment and the preservation potential of such units. Ichnology on intertidal flat in western coast of Korea has a great potential to apply its results to petroleum geology as well as sedimentology.
Hierarchically controlled sequence stratigraphic analysis shows that the Lower Ordovician mixed carbonate-siliciclastic Mungok Formation, Korea consists of three depositional sequences: T1, T2, and T3. Sequence boundaries are generally marked by abrupt transition from coarse-grained shallow-water carbonates to fine-grained deeper-water carbonates mixed with fine-grained siliciclastics, and show indication of subaerial exposure such as karstification. Within this sequence stratigraphic framework, facies characteristics indicate that the Mungok sequences were mostly deposited in subtidal ramp environments. High-frequency cycles consist of upward-shallowing facies successions. Cycles of shallow-water and basinal deposits are not represented well, probably due to cycle amalgamation. Cycle stacking patterns do not show a consistent thickness change that reflects a large-scale sea-level change due to unfilled accommodation space. The Mungok sequences show that many factors including relative sea-level change and topography are involved in controlling sequence development on carbonate ramps. The depositional setting evolved from the high-energy ramps in the sequences T1 and T2 into the low-energy ramp in the sequence T3. Topography is interpreted to have been responsible for the different energy regimes of the carbonate ramps in the Mungok sequences. The high ramp gradient in the sequences T1 and T2 seems to be caused by space-time-dissociated differential sedimentation resulting in spatially narrow distribution of sediment filling, which in turn may be related to high rate of relative sea-level change. In contrast, low ramp gradient was maintained in the sequence T3 during slow changes of relative sea level resulting in broad distribution of sediment filling.

In this study, datum points measurement have been collected and then weather data have been analyzed to figure out erosion and deposition environmental change around Halmi-island, Baramarae. First of all, it was difficult to analyze geomorphological change which is caused by climate change because of quite short term of collection period of data. However, differences in spatial distribution of erosion and deposition have locally been shown. In all season, the wind is blowing in north and north-west direction mostly except in summer which is shifted to south direction. However, since its ratio which are above 5m/s is much lower than the north and north-west wind, its effect on geomorphological process is very tiny. In order to look at a tendency of erosion and deposition environmental change around Baramarae Halmi-island, the periphery of Halmi-island was classified to east and west part, then accumulated erosion and deposition values have been calculated. As a result, generally, the datum points are located in the west part which are mostly depositional sites. On the other hand, the datum points are located in east part showed the dominant erosion patterns.

The calcretes from the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Supergroup in the vicinity of Ulsan city have been examined at five sites (Daedong, Seodong, Ansachon, Deogha, and Mangyangri). In these calcretes, evidences indicating pedogenic origin are recognized. Included are calcite aureoles around detrital grains, pedotubular pores, microstromatactis, circumgranular cracks, fitted structure of adjacent peloids, calcrete ooids, rhizocretions, and calcrete intraclasts. On the basis of calcrete development together with lithofacies, the depositional environments of those deposits are interpreted as lake margin (Daedong deposits), braided to low-sinuosity river (Seodong deposits), braid plain (Ansachon deposits), and meandering river (Deogha and Mangyangri). Stratigraphically, the fluvial deposits of study area show paleoenvironmental change from braided to low-sinuosity river plain under arid climatic condition to meandering river plain under seasonally wet an dry climatic condition. The stratigraphic successions of the Gyeongsang Supergroup of the study area Qacustrine-fluvial-Iacustrine) together with paleoenvironmental change of fluvial deposits suggest that those deposits can be correlated with the Banyaweol-Songnaedong-Geoncheonri formations of the Gyeongsang Supergroup in the western part of the Yangsan Fault.
We determined SHRIMP U-Pb ages of the detrital zircons separated from the Bangnim Group of the Pyeongchang area to constrain its depositional age. As the result, the minimum age group yielded $^{206}Pb/^{238}U$ age of $450.3{\pm}4.2Ma$ (n=3), suggesting depositional age younger than Late Ordovician. Therefore, the Bangnim Group cannot be a Precambrian sedimentary formation but is younger than Myobong Formation of the Early Paleozoic Joseon Supergroup of the Taebaeksan basin. Such a depositional age implies that the Bangnim Group and structurally overlying Jangsan Quartzite should be in fault contact, suggesting that the Jangsan Quartzite, Myobong Formation and Pungchon Limestone thrusted over the Bangnim Group. The zircon U-Pb age distribution pattern of the Bangnim Group resembles those of the Early Paleozoic Myobong and Sambangsan Formations of the Taebaeksan basin and seemingly Middle Paleozoic Daehyangsan Quartzite and the Taean Formation. However, detrital zircon U-Pb age patterns of the Late Paleozoic Pyeongan Supergroup are quite distinct from them, suggesting drastic change in provenance of the detrital zircon supply. Therefore, we suggest that the Bangnim Group was deposited before the Pyeongan Supergroup.
