The objective of this study was to evaluate the toothbrush abrasion characteristics of class V restorations. Thirty extracted human premolars, which were collected from oral surgery clinics were used. We mounted five teeth in a metal ring mold of 50 mm in diameter and 15 mm in height using chemically cured acrylic resin. Class V cavities were prepared in lingual cervical root surfaces and restored using one of following restorative materials : Dentin Conditioner/Fuji II LC (Group FL), All Bond II/Z-250 (Group ZT), One-up Bond F/Palfigue Estelite (Group PE), F2000 Primer/Adhesive (Group FT), and Prime & Bond 2.1/Dyract AP (Group DR). They were stored under distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for seven days. The toothbrush abrasion test was conducted using a wear testing machine of pin-on disk type under a load of 1.5 N for 100,000 cycles. We have examined the bonded interfaces, the changes of surface roughness and color of abraded surfaces. From this experiment, the following results were obtained. 1. The change of surface roughness showed high degree: RMGIC>compomer>composite resin (p<0.05). 2. Because of the protrusion and missing of filler particles, SEM observation of abraded surfaces of RMGIC and compomers revealed the increase of surface roughness due to the selective removal of matrix resin. 3. The color change by toothbrush abrasion was affected in large part by the change of $L^*$ and $b^*$ of resin composites (p<0.05). 4. The color change by toothbrush abrasion was so small to detect by human eyes. 5. SEM observation of abraded surfaces revealed the interface bonding was the best in the FT group.
The content of fluoride in toothpaste commercially available in Korea has been increased to less than 1500 ppm. The purpose is to provide these results to consumers and to suggest alternatives to the safe use of toothpaste. This study was conducted on 1,300 people for 2 weeks from March 2021. As a research tool, general characteristics and oral health behaviors were surveyed. ConsExpo Web 1.0.2. It was used as an input variable for exposure evaluation. As a result of the study, when a toothpaste containing 1500 ppm of fluoride was used, the external dose on day of exposure was 2.3×10-2 mg/kg/day for males, 2.9×10-2 mg/kg/day for females, and children aged 2-3 years was estimated to be 7.3×10 -2 mg/kg/day. As a result of this study, it is thought that as the fluoride content of toothpaste distributed in the market increases, it will be used as a basic data to present standards for safe use by consumers.
The purpose of this study was to investigate present status of use about antimicrobial agent (triclosan, ethanol) and preservatives (sodium benzoate, methyl p-hydroxybenzoate, propyl p-hydroxybenzoate) in dentifrice. 75 samples including 16 mouthwashes were analyzed in this study. Contents of triclosan and preservatives were analyzed using by HPLC and ethanol was analyzed by headspace-GC. Preservatives were detected from total 37 samples, which are suitable for the legal limits in Korea. Methyl p-hydroxybenzoate was detected from 26 samples (0.003~0.19%), propyl p-hydroxybenzoate was detected from 11 samples (0.002~0.02%) and sodium benzoate was detected from 14 samples (0.1~0.3%), respectively. Methyl p-hydroxybenzoate was detected from 6 samples (0.03~0.19%), propyl p-hydroxybenzoate was detected from 1 samples (0.01%) and sodium benzoate was detected form 5 samples (0.1~0.2%) in 20 dentifrice for children. Triclosan was not detected from 75 samples. Ethanol was detected from 16 samples (4.9~21.9%) in 19 samples; among them three samples showed the higher contents (20.5~21.9%) but ethanol contents was not labeled in these samples.
The aim of this study was to assess the effects of dentifrice-contatning grapefruit seed extract (GSE) and processed sulfur solution (PSS) on antimicrobial effects against oral pathogens. We first evaluated the antimicrobial effects of GSE and PSS against oral microbes: Streptococcus mutans (Sm), Prevotella intermedia (Pi), Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) and Candida albicans (Ca). When antimicrobial activity against Sm, Pi, Pg and Ca was tested, at 40 $\mu$l/disk, the inhibition zones of GSE were 11.0, 9.5, 8.0 and 9.0 mm, respectively. With the same method, the inhibition zones of PSS were 2.0, 3.5, 0.0 and 1.5 mm, respectively. In the micro broth dilution method, the MIC values of GSE against Sm, Pi, Pg and Ca were 0.24, 0.06, 0.10 and 15.63 $\mu$l/rnl, respectively. The MIC values of PSS were 0.12, 3.91,>125 and 7.81 $\mu$l/ml, respectively. When pH, refractive index, viscosity and color value of dentifrice-containing GSE and PSS were measured, there were no significant changes in these physical properties compared to the control samples. Antimicrobial activities of dentifrice products containing 0.5% GSE and 0.5% PSS against oral pathogens were 7.3, 4.3, 2.2 and 1.5 mm, respectively. According to these results, we conclude that there may be a role for GSE and PSS in the development of new oral supplies.
The use of dentifries in toothbrushing is to aid removal of dental plaque and contribute to good oral hygiene. Therefore, it is important to record the quantity of dental plaque present after toothbrushing. This report concerns with the plaque removal of toothbrushing in a group of dental students who used dentifrices 'X' 'Y' and 'Z' marketed in Korea. And the cleansing effect was examined in accordance with Simplified Oral Hygiene Index. The Following conclusion was obtained. The dentifrices 'X' 'Y' and 'Z' were effective on the removal of dental plaque in the degree of -0.66±0.21, 0.70±0.24 and 0.84±0.19 plaque Index. The differences in the value of plaque Index between the dentifrices 'X', 'Z' and 'Y', 'Z' were significant statistically. The dentifrice 'Z' had the most intensive effects above all.
Bamboo salt is a special processed salt by Korean traditional recipe. Recent study results showed that bamboo salt or bamboo salt with some other materials like herbal extracts have the anti-microbial activity, inhibition effects of dental plaque and gingival inflammation. Bamboo salt also showed anti-cariogenic effects; remineralization and acid resistance. Compare to fluoride toothpaste, bomboo salt toothpaste with fluoride showed the more effective remineralization on inner part of the early dental caries lesion. It increased the surface hardness and decreased lesion depth of early dental caries lesion. Thus, it is suggested thai bamboo salt could be used as a anti-microbial, anti-plaque, anti-inflammatory and anti-cariogenic material for oral disease prevention. Especially, bamboo salt dentifrice with fluoride can be recommanded as a useful remineralizing agent.
The auther has made an epidemiological study on the oral examination and oral health in 226 Korea Military Nursing School Students. The following results was obtained: 1. The prevalance rate of dental caries was 71.23%. 2. The prevalance rate of D.M.F. was 45.82%. 3. The tooth health index was 77.87%. 4. The prevalance distribution of dental caries was 63.87% in the mandibular and 36.13% in the maxila. 5. Of examined students, 94.0% was brushing twice per day and 6.0% once per day. 6. Of examined students, 98.2% was using the paste form on dentifrice and tooth brush. 7. Of examined students, 22.1% was ignorant of causes of dental caries.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the in-vitro efficacy of the active ingredients of dentifrice following treatment time. The whitening effect was evaluated by a change in lightness value relative to the contact time of hydrogen peroxide, by using artificially stained hydroxyapatite discs. The anti-calculus effect was assessed based on the amount of calcium eluted from the human dental calculus by sodium pyrophosphate. Remineralization was evaluated by the Vickers hardness test following the application of sodium fluoride to bovine enamel. In order to view dentinal tubules occlusion, the formation of insoluble calcium salts by bovine dentin specimens was observed using scanning electron microscopy. Change in lightness value (${\Delta}L$) was $5.50{\pm}1.51$ after 1 min of treatment, $5.73{\pm}0.43$ after 3 min, $8.64{\pm}0.24$ after 10 min, $18.93{\pm}0.76$ after 30 min, and $27.35{\pm}0.54$ after 60 min. The amount of calcium eluted from the human dental calculus was $4.23{\pm}0.14ppm$ after 1 min of treatment, $4.51{\pm}0.04ppm$ after 3 min, $12.12{\pm}0.16ppm$ after 10 min, $17.85{\pm}0.81ppm$ after 30 min, and $25.15{\pm}0.32ppm$ after 60 min. The Vickers hardness change value (${\Delta}VHN$) was $1.96{\pm}1.44$ after 1 min, $1.52{\pm}1.06$ after 3 min, $9.06{\pm}0.15$ after 10 min, $10.83{\pm}5.13$ after 30 min, and $12.55{\pm}2.09$ after 60 min. Partial dentinal tubules occlusion was observed at 10 min and complete occlusion was evident at 60 min. In summary, the use of patch type dentifrices for 10, 30, or 60 min were 1.57 to 8.26 times more effective than using the paste type dentifrices for 1 to 3 min. Based on these findings, it is reasonable to expect that the use of patch type dentifrices for 10 min would lead to remineralization, anti-calculus and dentinal tubules occlusion effects, and that use for 30 min would result in a whitening effect.
