  • Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome is a rare hereditary disease that results from a 4p chromosome deletion. Patients with this syndrome are characterized by craniofacial dysgenesis, seizures, growth delay, intellectual disability, and congenital heart disease. Although several cases have been reported, very little information is available on anesthetic management for patients with Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome. We encountered a case requiring anesthetic management for a 2-year-old girl with Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome. The selection of an appropriately sized tracheal tube and maintaining intraoperatively stable hemodynamics might be critical problems for anesthetic management. In patients with short stature, the tracheal tube size may differ from what may be predicted based on age. The appropriate size ( internal diameter ) of tracheal tubes for children has been investigated. Congenital heart disease is frequently associated with Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome. Depending on the degree and type of heart disease, careful monitoring of hemodynamics is important.

  • Objectives: This study investigated health behavior and nutritional status according to the presence or absence of periodontal disease using data from the Sixth National Health Nutrition Survey. Methods: Data from the 2013-2015 National Health Nutrition Survey were analyzed by frequency analysis, chi-square test, and Pearson's correlation analysis using SPSS 21.0. Results: Periodontal disease was more frequent in the group of patients who perceived that their subjective health status was "very bad" or were underweight according to the BMI classification. In men, periodontal disease occurred more frequently in those who were taking calcium (p<0.05), and periodontal disease occurred more frequently in the age group of 20-39, regardless of sex (p<0.05). In women, periodontal disease was less frequent in the group taking vitamin A. In both men and women, the presence of periodontal disease correlated with high fasting blood sugar and glycated hemoglobin levels. Conclusions: A customized program should be developed for each patient to identify factors that affect the relationship among periodontal disease, nutrient intake, and blood parameters. Such information will help improve the oral health of the population.

Methods: The study subjects were 369 people from the regular dental health checkup in the general hospital in Busan. After receiving informed consent, a self-reported questionnaire was completed from October 1, 2014 to January 31, 2015. The questionnaire consisted of dental caries and periodontal diseases by direct examination and toothbrushing method. Data were analyzed by ${\chi}^2$ test, Fisher's exact test, and Pearson's correlation. Results: In the morbidity of dental caries and periodontal diseases, the dental caries was most common in those having restored teeth(236 subjects, 64%), while periodontal diseases were found in mild cases of gingival inflammation in 285 subjects(77.2%), and mild cases of dental calculus in 274 subjects(73.4%). Most of the respondents replied that they did not have systemic disease or oral health related symptoms. According to toothbrushing pattern, dental caries experiences were most common in those having less frequent toothbrushing less than 3 minutes and no tongue brushing. The outbreak of dental caries was more common in 5 times than 3 to 4 times a day. Conclusions: The education of the right toothbrushing method and use of dental floss is the most important prevention of dental caries and periodontal disease in the adults.

  • Dental treatment for the disabled should be a customized that considers the characteristics and degree of cooperation of each disabled patient. There are additional considerations during implant treatment and tooth extraction in disabled patients. Since some brain lesion disorder or cardiac disease patients may be taking antiplatelet or anticoagulant medications, it is necessary to evaluate whether these medications should be discontinued before an invasive procedure. Precautions should be taken for patients with heart valve disease considering the risk of infective endocarditis, especially during invasive dental procedures. Moreover, disabled patients may have difficulty in following instructions and cautions. There are specific considerations for each stage of implant treatment in disabled patients. In the case of patients who are in the pre- or post-transplant state, it is necessary to assess their general condition and oral disease due to the risk of infection. Since disabled patients with various systemic diseases may visit the dental clinic, it is important to understand their characteristics and treatment process in order to flexibly adjust the dental treatment plan accordingly.

  • Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease which affects whole gastrointestinal tract from mouth to anus. Crohn's disease may present both oral manifestation and gastrointestinal symptom-abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss, anorexia, fever, and growth failure. The prevalence rate of oral manifestation is approximately between 0.5% and 20%. The oral lesion could be the first sign of Crohn's disease. We present a case of Crohn's disease in a patient who did not show typical oral manifestations but had nonspecific aphthous like ulceration and burning sensation for many years. Through this case, we suggest approaches for the diagnosis and treatment of the oral lesion of Crohn's disease.

Health information plays an important role in individual health promotion and education, so the degree of exposure to information about oral health of the elderly is expected to have a significant impact on understanding and acquiring information on oral content videos on the importance, prevention, and management of oral health of the elderly in the future. Methods: This study analyzed video content related to oral diseases of the elderly in a total of 150 videos uploaded on YouTube from January 1, 2012 to May 13, 2021, using a total of three books of dental hygiene for the elderly. Results: Forty-nine broadcasters accounted for the most of this information. Among the information providers, there were two dental hygienists. They accounted for 1.3% of all the information providers. The highest number of dental hygienists who broadcasted information was 42 in 2019. The average number of views was 37,303 periodontal diseases, the highest. Among the videos, dry mouth was the most common with 34 oral diseases. Conclusion: The number of images for each disease varies, so it seems that information should be provided in various ways. Dental hygienists should widely improve oral health knowledge by providing various dental hygiene management images for each oral disease to improve the oral health of the general public. In addition, based on the information of the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, the development and provision of content should be actively carried out so that people can obtain the information they desire.

  • Objectives: This study was conducted by clinical dentistry hygienists to develop knowledge measurement tools and evaluate knowledge necessary to cope with emergencies related to systemic diseases occurring in dentistry. Methods: Basic questions were developed on the six most frequently occurring diseases in the dental office: diabetes, syncope, respiratory disease, coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, and epilepsy. Fifty-eight preliminary questions were composed in a survey format through expert validation. The survey was then conducted on 290 dental hygienists to verify the composition validity and reliability. Factor and reliability analyses were performed using the SPSS 23.0 program, and the correct answer rate for each question was calculated. Results: 49 items of a total of 13 factors were adopted as the final items for signs, symptoms, prevention and treatment of five diseases. The question with the highest percentage of correct answers for each question was "Slowly set up the unit chair when raising the patient"(97.9%) during the prevention of unconsciousness and question with the lowest correct answer rate was "soft substances such as cloth should be put in the mouth to prevent trauma while the seizure persists" (16.6%). Conclusions: A total of 49 questions have been developed as tools to measure the knowledge of dental hygienists' first aid related to systemic diseases and it is expected that related curriculum can be operated or evaluated by using them.
