  • Objectives: This study examined the color changes of a resin composite with different shades upon exposure to water with different pH. Materials and Methods: Nanohybrid resin composites (Filtek Z350XT, 3M ESPE) with four different shades (A2, A3, B1, and B2) were immersed in water with three different pH (pH 3, 6, and 9) for 14 day. The CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ color coordinates of the specimens were evaluated before and after immersion in the solutions. The color difference (${\Delta}E^*$) and the translucency parameter (TP) were calculated using the color coordinates. Results: ${\Delta}E^*$ ranged from 0.33 to 1.58, and the values were affected significantly by the pH. The specimens immersed in a pH 6 solution showed the highest ${\Delta}E^*$ values (0.87 - 1.58). The specimens with a B1 shade showed the lowest ${\Delta}E^*$ change compared to the other shades. TP ranged from 7.01 to 9.46 depending on the pH and resin shade. The TP difference between before and after immersion in the pH solutions was less than 1.0. Conclusions: The resulting change of color of the tested specimens did not appear to be clinically problematic because the color difference was < 1.6 in the acidic, neutral, and alkaline solutions regardless of the resin shade, i.e., the color change was imperceptible.

  • The resin matrix in the dental composite is generally composed of 2,2-bis[4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloyloxy propoxy) phenyl] propane (Bis-GMA) as a base resin and triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) as a diluent for the reduction of viscosity. The applications of dental composite were often limited in dentistry due to the relatively large amounts of volumetric shrinkage during polymerization and water uptake caused by the addition of TEGDMA to the resin matrix. In this study, in order to solve problems stemmed from the TEGDMA by reducing amount of diluent added to resin matrix, diethylene glycol dimethacrylate (DEGDMA) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) were explored as new diluents. A decrease in the volumetric shrinkage and an increase in the mechanical strength were observed by replacing TEGDMA in the dental composite to DEGDMA (or EGDMA). Reduction in the mechanical strength of the dental composite containing DEGDMA (or EGDMA), was not serious in comparison with that of the dental composite containing TEGDMA after water uptake.

  • Since the introduction of restorative dental composites, their physical properties have been significantly improved. However, polymerization shrinkage is still a major drawback. Many efforts have been made to develop a low shrinking composite, and silorane-based composites have recently been introduced into the market. In addition, many different methods have been developed to measure the polymerization shrinkage. In this study, we developed a new method to measure the linear polymerization shrinkage of composites without direct contact to a specimen using a particle tracking method with computer vision. The shrinkage kinetics of a commercial silorane-based composite (P90) and two conventional methacrylate-based composites (Z250 and Z350) were investigated and compared. The results were as follows: 1. The linear shrinkage of composites was 0.33-1.41%. Shrinkage was lowest for the silorane-based (P90) composite, and highest for the flowable Z350 composite. 2. The new instrument was able to measure the true linear shrinkage of composites in real time without sensitivity to the specimen preparation and geometry.

  • Objectives: To determine the effect of the spectral output of single and dual-peak light emitting diode (LED) curing lights on the microhardness and color stability of commercial resin composites formulated with camphorquinone and alternative photoinitiators in combination. Materials and Methods: Three light-polymerized resin composites (Z100 (3M ESPE), Tetric Ceram (Ivoclar Vivadent) and Aelite LS Posterior (Bisco)) with different photoinitiator systems were used. The resin composites were packed into a Teflon mold (8 mm diameter and 2 mm thickness) on a cover glass. After packing the composites, they were light cured with single-peak and dual-peak LEDs. The Knoop microhardness (KHN) and color difference (${\Delta}E$) for 30 days were measured. The data was analyzed statistically using a student's t-test (p < 0.05). Results: All resin composites showed improved microhardness when a third-generation dual-peak LED light was used. The color stability was also higher for all resin composites with dual-peak LEDs. However, there was a significant difference only for Aelite LS Posterior. Conclusions: The dual-peak LEDs have a beneficial effect on the microhardness and color stability of resin composites formulated with a combination of camphorquinone and alternative photoinitiators.

  • Silica nanoparticles for polymeric dental restorative composites were prepared by Stober method, and then the effects of surface treatment of silica particles with Lmethacrylofpropyltrimethofsilane $(\gamma-MPS)$ on the dispersity of the silica particles in the organic matrix was investigated. Particles having various average size were prepared by using controlled amounts of tetraethylorthosilicate(TEOS), water, and catalyst and by changing solvent used for reaction. The site of particles prepared by using methanol as solvent was smaller than that prepared by using ethanol as solvent. In addition, the size of particles was increased by decreasing amounts of water and by increasing amounts of TEOS and catalyst. Hydrophobic silica nanoparticles was prepared by reacting hydrophilic nanoparticles with $\gamma-MPS$ to improve interfacial properties with organic matrix. Amounts of $\gamma-MPS$ per unit mass of the particles was increased by decreasing particle size. even though the amount of $\gamma-MPS$ per specific surface area were nearly the same regardless of the particle size. The dispersity of the silica particles in the organic matrix was improved when the surface treated silica particles were used for preparing the polymeric dental restorative composites.

  • The demand for tooth-colored restorations has grown considerably during the last decade. Posterior composite restorations have risen in popularity as a result of the development of improved resin composites, bonding systems and operating techniques. A major limitation of direct composite restoration is the difficulty of controlling the polymerization shrinkage. To overcome this limitation, the indirect fabrication of a composite restoration and cementation with resin cement has been advocated. Unfortunately, the current available resin cements with indirect restorations do not always bond to dentin as strongly as dentin adhesive systems bond with direct resin composite restorations. Several procedural strategies have been proposed for indirect composite restoration. In this regard, the rationale for the indication, characteristics and clinical application is described in this paper. As a result, we will try to suggest the evidence-based guidelines for indirect composite restorations by reviewing each available indirect composite products, technical procedure and pronosis.

  • The esthetic demands are growing in treatment of primary maxillary incisors as well as permanent ones. There is something dissatisfying about in the keen eyes of the pediatric dentists on their esthetic results of efforts because current tooth color system is created for the purpose of the application to the permanent incisors. In this study using the scientific color measurement device, I would like to introduce a color scheme for the primary maxillary incisors and suggest clinical tips for the better results of resin composite restorations.

  • Bis-GMA is an important component in commercial dental restorative composites, but its hydroxy groups are considered to promote water absorption of the cured composite in a mouth. In this work, multifunctional methacrylates were prepared by blocking the hydroxy groups in bis-GMA with methacryloyl groups. Comparing to bis-GMA, new prepolymers having three methacryloyl groups (BPA-3M) and four methacryloyl groups (BPA-4M) showed much lower viscosities. Photopolymerization conversion of BPA-3M was slightly higher than that of bis-GMA. Water absorption of the photo-cured composite containing BPA-3M was measured for one month and found to be much lower than that of bis-GMA.

  • Two t-amines, N,N-dimethylaniline (MA), N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine (MPT), were investigated as new visible light amine initiators for a dental resin composite of UDMA in order to improve photopolymerization effect. Three t-amines mixed with three photosensitizers, camphorquinone(CQ), 1-phenyl-1,2-propane dione(PD) and diacetyl (DA), respectively. And then this mixtures are added to resin monomer, UDMA. Photopolymerization efficiency of UDMA was studied through the use of FT-IR absorption spectroscopy. The photopolymerization effect of amine initiators were compared with that of 4-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (AEM), the most widely used photoinitiator. The photopolymerization efficiency of UDMA containing the amine initiator increased with irradiation time. The relative polymerization efficiency containing the CQ photosensitizer increase was in the order: AEM < MPT < MA. And the relative polymerization efficiency containing the PD photosensitizer increase was in the order: MPT < AEM < MA. This result shows that MA is most efficient amine initiator with CQ and PD.

  • The shrinkage distribution of a dental composite (Clearfil AP-X, Kuraray, Japan) used for dental restoration was observed using a digital image correlation method. In order to analyze the shrinkage distribution formed during and after light irradiation, digital images were taken with different photographing conditions for each period. Optimal photographing conditions during LED irradiation were obtained through a preliminary experiment in which the exposure time was applied from 0.15 ms to 0.55 ms in 0.05 ms intervals. The DIC analysis results showed that the strain was non-uniform. For the initial 20 s of light irradiation the composite resin shrank to the level of 50~60% of the final curing shrinkage. Such large shrinkage amount of the composite resin lump affected the tensile stress concentration near the adhesive region between the composite resin and the substrate.
