  • 501 preschool children from 4 to 6 years were examined for their salivary reductase activity and caries experience by Resazurin Disc Test and dental examination respectively. We asked the parents about their children's oral hygiene habits, between-meal eating habits, and physical exercise habits by the questionnaire. Toothbrushing frequency had negative relation to salivary reductase activity and caries experience. Caries experience was low when parents did toothbrushing for children, when teeth were brushed at bedtime, and when fluoride toothpastes were used. Salivary reductase activity and caries experience were high in bread & cookies group, chocolates & candies group, milk & soft drink group, and fruits & vegetables group in order. Caries experience was high in case of irregular between-meal eating. Sweet food eating frequency had positive relation to caries experience. Caries activity was low in case of eating homemade non-sweet between-meals. Salivary reductase activity and caries experience were low when gum-chewing frequency was high. Salivary reductase activity and caries experience were high when the amount of physical exercise was low.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the caries experience and anxiety level to the dentist in the preschool children. 511 preschool children were brought to the dental hospital and examined for caries experience. Caries experience was measured as dDT index, fFT index, dDfFT index, dDT rate, and fFT rate. Children were requested to draw a dentist. Drawings were analyzed by the method of Human Figure Drawing Anxiety Score. Pearson correlation coefficents and their significance were calculated between caries experience and anxiety scores. There were significant negative correlation between fFT index and anxiety scores, between dDfFT index and anxiety scores, and between fFT rate and anxiety scores. There was significant positive correlation between dDT rate and anxiety scores. The results seemed to suggest that dental treatment experience reduced children's anxiety toward dentists. But, because there was obvious negative correlation between age and anxiety scores, age factor should be considered in the interpretation of the results.

Methods : Subjects were 324 patients who visited Dental Prophylaxis Practice Lab in A university for the preventive removal of tartar from April to June 8, 2012. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 18.0 through the frequency analysis, chi-test, and logistics regression analysis. Results : In relation to scaling experience by age, 65.3% had experienced scaling checkup and those between 20 to 29 (34.7%) did not receive the scaling therapy. Smokers tended to have received more scaling experience than nonsmokers. Second, the number of untreated dental caries and missing teeth due to dental caries were important because the variables of oral health condition affected the scaling experience. Conclusions : It is necessary to increase the scaling experience and regular dental checkup by providing the education to improve dental clinics visit based on the knowledge and belief towards the scaling.

  • The aim of the present study was to investigate the dental caries experience in disabled people according to the handicapped types in Korea. This study subjects based on the national disabled survey 2004 were collected by designed cluster sampling and interviewed with structured questionnaire in order to examine dental caries and sociodemographic status. The subjects were attending the special schools and private or public welfare institutions for crippled disorder, encephalopathy disorder, mental retardation, visual disturbance, and hearing defect. Oral examination was conducted by 13 trained dentists. 1,307 of handicapped people were finally analysed. ANOVA and Cochran-Mantel-Hanzel analysis were adapted for statistical analysis. The results were as follows; Dental caries prevalence, DMFT(Decayed, missing, filled teeth), and DMFS(Decayed, missing, filled surfaces) of disabled people were higher in crippled disorder and mental retardation than the others. There were significant differences in dental caries prevalence, DMFT, and DMFS according to the disabled. DMFT was significantly higher than national population in every age group except in 12-14 year-old and more than 35 group. It was likely that the experience level of dental caries was significantly different according to the handicapped types in Korea and higher than the people without handicap.

This is a secondary analysis study using data from National Health and Nutrition Survey(2008 & 2018), and the subjects of the study are those with permanent treatment experience. The data in this study were t-test, ANOVA and regression analysis using SPSS /WIN 24.0. As a result of the study, The experience of permanent tooth caries according to gender was high in woman(M=.76, W=.83), and the experience of permanent tooth caries according to the educational level showed that the caries experience of high-educated level(College or higher=.92). In the difference according to the subjective body type recognition, it was confirmed that obesity was associated with the experience of permanent tooth caries. Among the weight control methods, fasting was the most influential on the permanent tooth caries experience. The experience of permanent tooth caries according to the weight change was found to have an effect on both weight loss and increase, In future studies, not only studies of sugar intake related to obesity, but also proper oral health education study that informs about the risk of dental caries in the diet that is progressing in line with the current trend should be continued.

Results : The findings of the study were as follows. 1. In children, the ratio(DMF rate)of the dental caries experience in permanent teeth, appeared higher for men than women. Divided by grade level, the ratio of caries experience in the permanent teeth(DMF rate) generally appear higher in older than young. Thus between the child's gender and grade level by the ratio of caries experience in the permanent teeth(DMF rate) showed the statistically significant differences (p<0.05). 2. Between the socioeconomic characteristics of mothers and the children's level of dental caries experiences, not showed the statistically significant difference.(p>0.05). 3. The significant difference showed between the dental caries levels of the children and the mother's oral health care behavior - a toothbrush replacement period, mother's broken teeth, mothers guidances of the brushing after snacks for children(p<0.05). Conclusions : The mother's oral health attitudes and behaviors can affect to their children's oral care habits. • The purpose of this study was to know whether the information of caries activity and caries experience of the children can be used to predict the behavior of the children during the dental treatment. The subjects of the study were one hundred and eighty-one preschool children, three to six years old. Salivary reductase activity was tested by the Resazurin Disc Test. Caries experience was examined. The children's behavior was observed using the rating scale of Frankl. Salivary reductase activity of the negative behavior group was slightly higher than that of the positive behavior goup, but the difference was not significant. dt index and ds index of the negative behavior group were significantly higher than those of the positive behavior group. There were no significant differences in ft index and fs index between the two behavior groups. The results suggest that the negative behavior of a child can be predicted when the child has many untreated dental caries.
