Separation of particles based on different sizes, detection of pathogenic bacteria and isolation of leukocytes from whole blood are typical applications of spiral or helical microchannels. The present study focuses on developing a CD4+ T-cell counting device for monitoring HIV/AIDS patients with the aid of a helical minichannel used for a sample cartridge. For the experiment, $10{\mu}m$ sized microbeads were used for visualization with a fluorescence imaging system. Alignment of microbeads was investigated in a stationary and spinning sample cartridge filled with glycerol-water mixtures of different densities. The helical minichannel was spun using a DC motor controlled by an Arduino board with a Bluetooth shield. It was found that when the sample cartridge was made stationary, no bead alignment was achieved for a medium with density (0% and 20% glycerol) lower than that of the beads, but when it was spun at 2000-3000 rpm for 1-4 min, an alignment was obtained at the top of the channel facilitating optical detection and enumeration of those microbeads. Since an alignment of microbeads was achieved for a medium with density as that of blood plasma, the same approach can be applied for aligning and counting CD4+ T-lymphocytes in whole blood samples collected from patients.
The direct injection gasoline spray-wall interaction was characterized inside a heated pressurized chamber using various visualization techniques, including high-speed laser-sheet macroscopic and microscopic movies up to 25,000 frames per second, shadowgraph, and double-spark particle image velocimetry. Two hollow cone high-pressure swirl injectors having different cone angles were used to inject gasoline onto a heated plate at two different impingement angles. Based on the visualization results, the overall transient spray impingement structure, fuel film formation, and preliminary droplet size and velocity were analyzed. The results show that upward spray vortex inside the spray is more obvious at elevated temperature condition, particularly for the wide-cone-angle injector, due to the vaporization of small droplets and decreased air density. Film build-up on the surface is clearly observed at both ambient and elevated temperature, especially for narrow cone spray. Vapor phase appears at both ambient and elevated temperature conditions, particularly in the toroidal vortex and impingement plume. More rapid impingement and faster horizontal spread after impingement are observed for elevated temperature conditions. Droplet rebounding and film break-up are clearly observed. Post-impingement droplets are significantly smaller than pre-impingement droplets with a more horizontal velocity component regardless of the wall temperature and impingement angle condition.
The curvature of wound boundaries has been identified as a key modulator that determines a type of force responsible for cell migration. While several studies report how certain curvatures of the boundary correlate with the rate at which the wound closes, it remains unclear how these curvatures are spatiotemporally formed to regulate the healing process. We investigated the dynamic changes in the boundary curvatures by visualizing cell migration patterns. Locally, cells at the convex boundary continuously move forward with transmitting kinetic responses behind to the cells away from the boundary, and cells at the concave boundary exhibit dramatic contracting motion, like a purse-string, when they accumulate enough negative curvatures to gain the thrust toward the void. Globally, the dynamics of boundary geometries are controlled by the diffusive flow of cells driven by the density gradient between the wound area and the cell layer.
Research on shock structures of supersonic jet through visualization experiments in low-pressure environment have not been actively conducted. Therefore, in this study, shock waves and supersonic jets were analyzed and compared by numerical analysis and Schlieren technique at low-pressure. Schlieren technique is commonly used to visualize the shock waves generated by density gradient as interferometric methods. Pressure ratio of entrance and ambient was set around 4 to observe moderate under-expanded jet. For validation of experimental and numerical results, the shock structure and frequency were compared. In the case of ST and C nozzle, the results were shown that the difference of shock cell distance was within 10%. The Mach number gradually decreased due to energy reduction, and the error rate was within 7%. D nozzle was not fitted to be observing the shock structure. Because the interface between rarefaction fan and supersonic jet was ambiguous and oscillating phemenoma occurred at end of jet, the supersonic jet in low ambient pressure was observed and analyzed.

Ultrasonic wave generation and propagation were modeled to simulate an ultrasonic test. A ray model was used for the modeling. Actual sound pressure distribution of the incident wave from an angle probe was analyzed using an ultrasonic visualization method to incorporate the actual sound pressure distribution in the model. In this method, the sound pressure was expressed by the density of rays and the reflection coefficient of ultrasonic beams. Reflection and mode conversion of rays were computed by the Snells law. Simulation programs for the problem of ultrasonic testing of a butt joint are built using this ray modeling. Simulation results for ultrasonic wave scattering from a defect and A-scan display in ultrasonic testing agreed with the actual experiment results.
Diesel and gasoline engines will be used as main power system of automobiles. Recently, engine downsizing is widely applied to both gasoline and diesel engines in order to improve fuel economy and exhaust emissions. Engine downsizing means small engine combustion chamber with higher combustion pressure. Therefore, spray and combustion process should be investigated under these high pressure and temperature conditions. In this study, constant volume combustion chamber which enables easy optical access from six directions was developed. Combustion chamber was designed to resist maximum pressure of 15 MPa and maximum temperature of 2,000 K. Combustible pre-mixed mixture was introduced into combustion chamber and ignited by spark plugs. High pressure and temperature were implemented by combustion of pre-mixed mixture. Three initial conditions of different pressure and density were tested. High repeatability of combustion process was implemented which was proven by low standard deviation of combustion pressure.
This study investigates the spatial patterns of distributed population in terms of population density, age structure, sex structure and family structure in Chou (smallest political city boundaries) of seven cities of Kitakawachi region. This displays the population dynamics of those cities from 1955 to 1995. It demonstrates how the populations of the cities are distributed with topography and with respect to the train stations. The demographic characteristics of the cities are visualized utilizing Arc View GIS capabilities with new visualizing technique in 3D environment based on data from Pasco Digital Map 2000.
The operating temperature of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) usually has to be limited under $100^{\circ}C$ to maintain the proper ionic conductivity. Therefore, the only product from reaction, water, is in the liquid phase. Two-phase flow makes the flow phenomenon in the channel difficult to understand and predict. Water blocking in the PEMFC channel or the pore of Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL), called flooding, is known as the main effect of PEMFC degradation. To analyze two-phase flow, the PEMFC with transparent acrylic plate was used. Two-phase flow patterns were observed by varying the current density. When the PEMFC is mounted horizontally, water in the cathode is mainly transported on the interface between the channel and GDL.
Optical Line Patternator(OLP) has been applied to get a distribution of the spray at high ambient pressure. OLP is a combined technique of extinction measurement and image processing. The attenuated intensity of laser beam after traversing spray region was measured by using a photo-detector, and the line image of Mie-scattering was captured simultaneously in the path of each laser beam by using a CCD camera. The distribution of extinction coefficient in the spray is obtained by processing these data with the algebraic reconstruction technique. From the distribution of extinction coefficient, the surface distribution of spray can be reconstructed. OLP does not use laser sheet but use laser beam so that the noise effect of multiple scattering, caused by increasing number density of droplet in high pressure environment, is reduced drastically. OLP is expected as a suitable method which can investigate the characteristics of relatively large spray under the high pressure environment such as liquid rocket engine.
