  • We have studied the radial g-r color gradients of early-type galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR6 in the redshift range 0.00 < z < 0.06. The color profiles of ~30 per cent of the galaxies in this sample show positive color gradients (centers being bluer). These positive gradient galaxies often show strong $H\beta$ absorption line strengths or emission line ratios that are consistent with star-forming populations. Combining the optical data with Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) UV photometry, we find that all positive gradient galaxies show blue UV-optical colors. They also exhibit a tendency of having a lower stellar velocity dispersion. Positive gradient galaxies tend to live in lower density regions than negative gradient galaxies and are likely to have a late-type companion galaxy. On the other hand, massive early-type galaxies show negative color gradients. A simplistic population analysis shows that these positive color gradients are visible only for half a billion years after a star burst. Although the effective radius decreases and mean surface brightness increases due to this centrally concentrated star formation, the positions of the positive gradient galaxies on the fundamental plane cannot be reproduced by any amount of recent star formation. Instead it required a lower velocity dispersion.

  • The research attempted to analyze the medicinal plant species richness in the vertical gradient from lower to the highest elevation of Makawanpur, focusing on the relationship between species richness and elevation which is very important for conservation and management of species diversity. Inventory was carried out in the study area by taking sampling intensity of 0.5% in the effective area. Altogether, 42 sample plots were laid in the field with the help of GIS software maintaining 50 m altitude difference. High species diversity was found in the herbs species whereas shrubs have comparatively low species diversity. The maximum species richness is found in herbs and poles whereas shrubs and trees have relatively low species richness. Research showed that species richness of medicinal plants increased with altitudinal gradient. While analyzing the species richness from 350 to 2,550 m (msl), the highest species richness was received with the elevation ranges from 1,800 m to 2,300 m. There was a positive relationship between species richness and altitudinal gradient in the study area. In addition, we have recorded the high value medicinal plants after 1,800 m altitude and rarely within 1,000 m. Medicinal plants correlated both positive and negative relationships with the increased altitude. The altitudinal response has positively seen except density (n/ha) of Shrubs. Domestication and cultivation of high value medicinal plants should be promoted in community forest including private lands. Training, workshops and awareness programs should be conducted to make people aware about medicinal plants resource utilization, conservation and commercialization of available medicinal plants.

  • For rheology investigation of lubricating oils, first phase diagrams were made from determined free volume based on density measurements and the temperature-pressure relation was estimated using the expansion coefficient of free volume and the temperature-pressure relation of the viscoelastic transition point. Next, the authors proposed the density-pressure-temperature relation and the viscosity-pressure-temperature relation of the tested oils based on the free volume and the phase diagrams. Moreover, it was shown that the Ehrenfest equation or the gradient of the phase diagram is closely related to the expansion coefficient of free volume.

  • From the dispersion relation of an electromagnetic (EM) wave propagating through plasmas, w$\^$2/ = w$\sub$p/$\^$2/+c$\^$2/k$\^$2/ the phase velocity (w/k) of the wave is large at high density where w$\sub$p/ is large, and small at low density Therefore, when a laser pulse is located on a downward density gradient of a plasma wave, the phase velocity of the back of the pulse becomes faster than that of the front of the pulse and the pulse wavelength decreases. • It has been suggested that merging plays an important role in the formation and the evolution of early-type galaxies (ETGs). Optical-NIR color gradients of ETGs in high density environments are found to be less steep than those of ETGs in low density environments, hinting frequent merger activities in ETGs in high density environments. In order to examine if the flat color gradients are the result of dry mergers, we studied the relations between merging features, luminosities, environments and color gradients of 196 low redshift ETGs selected from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe82. Near Infrared (NIR) images are taken from UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey (LAS). Color (r-K) gradients of ETGs with tidal features are a little flatter than relaxed ETGs, but not significant. We found that massive (> 10^11.3 solar masses) ETGs have -40% less scattered color gradients than less massive ETGs. The less scattered color gradients of massive ETGs could be evidence of dry merger processes in the evolution of massive ETGs. We found no relation between color gradients of ETGs and their environments.

  • A NiW functional alloy plating was investigated as variables of metal ion concentration, complexing agent, temperature, pH and applied current density. Even if numerous studies on reaction mechanism of NiW induced codeposition were carried out during couples of decade, it has not been acceptable reaction mechanism. This study was focused on the effect of the plating variables on the alloy composition in the NiW alloy plating. Applied current density could control mainly the alloy composition rather than other plating variables. It has also been confirmed that the functional alloy plating such as layered or gradient plating was possible by controlling applied current density.

  • Changing patterns of population densities in urban centers are different between Western countries and non-Western countries. Although Seoul is located in a non-Western country, the result of this study shows that its pattern of population density falls into the category of Western cities. Through the examination of three population density gradient models, it is clear that no model can precisely explain the population distribution of Seoul over time. Some of the models partly indicate the actual population distrisbution. The Clark model is appropriate to denote population distribution in the center of Seoul at an early stage in development. The Sherratt model cannot adequately explain the population distribution of Seoul.

  • We have performed the density functional theory calculations of $UO_2$ using the spin-polarized generalized gradient approximation (SP-GGA) and the SP-GGA+U approach. The SP-GGA+U approach correctly predicts the insulating electronic structure with antiferromagnetic ordering, but the SP-GGA calculations predict metallic behavior. The cohesive properties obtained from the SP-GGA+U calculations are in good agreement with the available experimental results and previous calculations. The spin-polarized local density of states shows that the antiferromagnetic ordering of $UO_2$ is governed by 5f orbitals of uranium ion. Our calculations demonstrate that the strong correlation of U 5f electrons should be taken into account for a reliable description of $UO_2$ physics.

  • This paper analyzes recording density according to the shape variation of Electric Probe writer, and present a shape design method for improving recording density in perpendicular electric recording device. The gradient of electric field has to be steep to improve recording density because transition region on the media becomes wider when recording. The optimum shape of electrode could be archived by using Response Surface Methodology and 2-Dimensional Finite Element Method.
