Transparent organic materials have been frequently used as an analog of the solidifying metallic materials, because their transparency permits an in-situ observation of the microstructural development during solidification through optical microscopy. Pivalic acid (PVA)-ethanol system showing an anisotropic property in solid-liquid interfacial energy and interface kinetics was adopted in the present experiment, and the detailed experiments performed are as follows: (1) variation of dendrite tip temperature with growth velocity, (2) correlation between primary dendrite arm spacing (${\lambda}_1$) and the growth orientation away from the heat flow direction (tilt angle: ${\theta}$), (3) variation of dendrite tip radius (R) with growth velocity (V), (4) dendrite tip stability parameter (${\sigma}^*$) and its dependence on the concentration. Concerning the correlation between the dendrite tip temperature and growth velocity the present result is well suited to Hunt-Lu equation. As the tilt angle increases, the average primary dendrite spacing tends to increase.
The purpose of this paper is to present the summary of trouble shooting result on the dendrite defect of SSM(Second Surface Mirror) which is one of major thermal control elements for satellite. Through this failure analysis on SSM dendrite, it is found that the dendrite defect may happen to silver coated layer of SSM if SSM is directly exposed to the environment containing sulfur or chlorine compound. As a preventive action, it is required that SSM shall not contact directly with rubber pad containing sulfur compound.
One of the characteristics of the neurons that distinguishes them from other cells is their complex and polarized structure consisting of dendrites, cell body, and axon. The complexity and diversity of dendrites are particularly well recognized, and accumulating evidences suggest that the alterations in the dendrite structure are associated with many neurodegenerative diseases. Given the importance of the proper dendritic structures for neuronal functions, the dendrite pathology appears to have crucial contribution to the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. Nonetheless, the cellular and molecular basis of dendritic changes in the neurodegenerative diseases remains largely elusive. Previous studies in normal condition have revealed that several cellular components, such as local cytoskeletal structures and organelles located locally in dendrites, play crucial roles in dendrite growth. By reviewing what has been unveiled to date regarding dendrite growth in terms of these local cellular components, we aim to provide an insight to categorize the potential cellular basis that can be applied to the dendrite pathology manifested in many neurodegenerative diseases.
The shape of a dendrite tip has long been approximated by a paraboloid of revolution, but many attempts have been made as well to more accurately match the dendrite tip profile using other mathematical functions: power function, 4th order polynomial, and hyperbolic function. In the present work, dendrite tip shapes were matched by parabolic function. The differences between the dendrite tip shapes of pivalic acid(PVA)-ethanol(Eth) and succinonitrile(SCN)-salol systems, characterized by anisotropic and isotropic solid-liquid interfacial properties, respectively, were quantitatively treated using shape parameters. The PVA-Eth system showed a slightly higher Z/R value than the SCN-salol system, their Z/R values lying in the range 2-4. (Z is the distance from the tip beyond which the parabolic fit starts to deviate from the profile, and R the tip radius.) ${\lambda}_P$ is the distance from the tip beyond which side branching starts to appear, and is larger in the PVA-Eth system than the SCNsalol system. ${\lambda}_P$ is different for both sides of the 2-dimensional dendrite profile. The difference of ${\lambda}_P$ between both sides of the dendrite is larger for PVA-Eth system than for SCN-salol, implying that the dendrite of PVA-Eth is less symmetric than that of SCN-salol.

Electrochemical alane ($AlH_3$) production process can be provided as a synthesis route which close a reversible cycle. In this study, growth inhibition of dendrite as key issues in this process was investigated. Main cause of dendrite growth was because Al fine powder separated in consumption process of Al electrode was moved to Pd electrode. In an effort to avoid this, use of glass block with uniform holes was the most effective to inhibit the amount of dendrite to that of $AlH_3$. Furthermore, effects of Al electrode (anode) type and electrolyte concentration were investigated and the optimal condition for inhibiting dendrite formation was proposed.
The principal objective of this study was to investigate changes in ice dendrite size during the freezing of tuna, in order to formulate a mathematical model of ice dendrite size. The tuna was frozen via a uni-directional heat transfer. Thermogram analysis allowed us to determine the position of the freezing front versus time, which is referred to as the freezing front rate. The morphology of the ice dendrites was assessed via scanning electron microscopy after freeze-drying, and the retained pore size was measured as ice dendrites. We noted that the mean size of ice dendrites increased with the distance to the cooling plate; however, it decreased with reductions in the cooling rate and the cooling temperature. In addition, shorter durations of the freeze-drying process decreased the freezing front rate, resulting in a larger size of the ice dendrite pores that operate as water vapor sublimation channels. According to our results, we could derive a linear regression as an empirical mathematical model equation between the ice dendrite size and the inverse of the freezing front rate.
This paper is presented for showing the effect of cooling rate on dendrite arm spacing, correlated with the chilling power of molding materials (conventional plaster, foamed plaster, silica sand) and section thickness, and also showing relationship between dendrite arm spacing and mechanical properties for an aluminum - 8.6 percent silicon - 3.6 percent copper alloy. Local solidification time $(t_f)$ and secondary dendrite arm spacing (d) could be varied widely in accordance with the molding materials and casting thickness, and the following relationship is obtained: $d=9.4t_f\;^{0.31}$ A good correlation between dendrite arm spacing and mechanical properties such as ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, hardness was found, that is, mechanical properties decreased in a linear manner with increase in log of secondary dendrite arm spacing. Ultimate tensile strength in conventional plaster mold casting decreased by 15 percent comparing with the sand casting, where as in foamed plaster mold casting, it decreased by 30 percent comparing with the sand casting. From those results, it has been verified that DAS might be the most representative parameter for predicting mechanical properties varing with the different cooling condition.
In the present study, the corrosion behavior of AZ91D as-cast alloy was investigated form the viewpoint of the distribution aspect of precipitate ($Mg_{17}Al_{12}$) and the variation of Al concentration in the Mg-rich matrix. The dendrite arm spacing (DAS) of an as-cast specimen was measured as a function of degree which describes the distribution aspect of the precipitate, and the salt spray test was conducted for various grain-sired specimens fur 20 days. The dendrite arm spacing increased as the grain size increased to about 150㎛, but a constant value is indicated when the grain size exceeds that range. Although the relationship between the corrosion rate and grain size is of a nonlinear type, the linear trend between the corrosion rate and the dendrite arm spacing is maintained for the overall range of dendrite arm spacing. Since the precipitate in the as-cast alloy is discontinuously distributed, this linear relationship means that the variation of Al-solute concentration in the Mg-rich matrix has a more potent effect than the protective action of the precipitate on the corrosion behavior of an as-cast alloy.

We have investigated the effects of applied potential, deposition time and electrolyte types on shapes and physical properties of Cu dendrites by potentiostatic electrodeposition. Finer shape of dendrites was observed at less cathodic potential by 100mV than at the limiting current, due to 'effective overpotential'. The shape of copper dendrite is related to the deposition time, too. The dendrite depositing for 10 min showed the finest shape. The finer dendrite has the less apparent density and the larger specific surface area. Dendrite from chloride solution has the lowest density and the largest surface area among three plating solutions, sulfate, chloride and pyrophosphate.
The present work is an attempt to evaluate the relationship between dendrite arm spacing and average cooling rate in gasatomized $Al_{87.3}misch$$metal_{8.3}Ni_{4.4}$ powder by means of the following methods. One is calculation of heat transfer coefficient and average cooling rate, which are derived from estimated particle velocity during gas-atomization. The other is measurement of secondary dendrite arm spacing, which are observed on the particle surface. Then, we make experimental equation for this relationship in case of permanent mold casting and compare it with similar equation in case of rapidly solidified powder. Both average cooling rates and solidification rates are considered to represent the variance of dendrite arm spacings in two types soidification route. Even though there is a considerable difference in each average cooling rate, the dendrite arm spacing values are similar in two cases; particle diameter, $100\;{\mu}m$, and casting width, 2.05 mm. It is because that each solidification route has similar solidification rate.
