  • Providing quality of service (QoS) guarantees over wireless link requires thorough understanding and quantification of the interactions among the traffic source, the wireless channel, and the underlying error control mechanisms. In this paper, we account for such interactions in a network-layer model that we use to investigate the delay performance of a wireless channel. We consider a single ON/OFF traffic stream transported over a wireless link. The capacity of this link fluctuates according to a fluid version of Gilbert-Elliot's model. We derive the packet delay distribution via two different approaches: uniformization and Laplace transform. Numerical aspects of both approaches are compared. The delay distribution is further used to quantify the wireless effective bandwidth under a given delay guarantee. Numerical results and simulations are used to verify the adequacy of our analysis and to study the impact of error control and bandwidth allocation on the packet delay performance. • Guaranteeing the end-to-end delay deadline is an important issue for quality of service (QoS) of delay sensitive systems, such as real-time system, networked control system (NCS), and cyber-physical system (CPS). Most routing algorithms typically use the mean end-to-end delay as a performance metric and select a routing path that minimizes it to improve average performance. However, minimum mean delay is an insufficient routing metric to reflect the characteristics of the unpredictable wireless channel condition because it only represents average value. In this paper, we proposes a deadline-aware routing algorithm that maximizes the probability of packet arrival within a pre-specified deadline for CPS by considering the delay distribution rather than the mean delay. The proposed routing algorithm constructs the end-to-end delay distribution in a given network topology under the assumption of the single hop delay follows an exponential distribution. The simulation results show that the proposed routing algorithm can enhance QoS and improve networked control performance in CPS by providing a routing path which maximizes the probability of meeting the deadline.

  • Underwater acoustic wave in shallow water is propagated through multipath that has a large delay spread causing Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI) and these characteristics deteriorate the performance in the communication system. In order to analyze the communication performance and investigate the correlation with multipath delay spread in a reverberant environment, an underwater acoustic communication experiment using Binary Phase-Shift Keying (BPSK) signals with symbol rates from 100 sym/s to 8000 sym/s was conducted in a 5 × 5 × 5 m3 water tank. The acoustic channels in a well-controlled tank environment had the characteristics of dense multipath delay spread due to multiple reflections from the interfaces and walls within the tank and showed the maximum excess delay of 40 ms or less, and the Root Mean Squared (RMS) delay spread of 8 ms or less. In this paper, the performances of Bit Error Rate (BER) and output Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) were analyzed using four types of communication demodulation techniques. And the parameter, Symbol interval to Delay spread Ratio in reverberant environment (SDRrev), which is the ratio of symbol interval to RMS delay spread in the reverberant environment is defined. Finally, the SDRrev was compared to the BER and the output SNR. The results present the reference symbol rate in which high communication performance can be guaranteed.

  • In this paper, a new time delay estimation algorithm, WTD-LMSTDE was proposed. This method has great improvement in convergence rate relative to the time domain approach by decreasing the eigen value spread of input signal autocorrelation matrix. The performance of the algorithm was evaluated for the cases of time invariant time delay and time varying time delay. In the case of time invariant time delay, the estimation accuracy of WTD-LMSTDE was better than that of LMSTDE from 3.3% to 12.5% with respect to SNR. In the case of time varying time delay, the mean error power of WTD-LMSTDE in linear increased delay environment was decreased about 2.4dB compared to that of LMSTDE under noise-free condition. As a result, we showed that the performance of WTD-LMSTDE is better than of LMSTDE.

  • Network-based real-time multimedia applications require guaranteed performances of communication service. Also according to increased bandwidth and processing performance in the future high speed networks, it is possible to make multimedia real-time applications such as distributed real-time applications including video conference, medical imaging, and video education. These applications have characteristics of stringent performance requirements in terms of delay, delay jitter and maximum loss rate. This paper proposes a new delay control for Broadband networks with FCFS queueing. The delay control provides an alternative solution to a current problem in real-time communication; traffic distortion, which makes it difficult to meet such real-time requirements. In simulations, it shows that the proposed delay control can guarantee local and end-to-end delay.

  • In grid-connected converter control, grid voltage feedforward is usually introduced to suppress the influence of grid voltage distortion on the converter's grid-side AC current. However, owing to the time-delay in control systems, the suppression effect of the grid voltage distortion is seriously affected. In this paper, the positive effects of the grid voltage feedforward control are analyzed in detail, and the time-delay caused by the low-pass filter (LPF) in the voltage filtering circuits and digital control are summarized. In order to reduce the time-delay effect on the performance of the feedforward control, a voltage feedforward control strategy with time-delay compensation is proposed, in which, a leading correction of the feedforward voltage is used. The optimal leading step used in this strategy is derived from analyzing the phase-frequency characteristics of a LPF and the implementation of digital control. By using the optimal leading step, the delay in the feedforward path can be further counteracted so that the performance of the feedforward control in terms of suppressing the influence of grid voltage distortion on the converter output current can be improved. The validity of the proposed method is verified through simulation and experiment results.

  • In this Paper, an adaptive microphone array system with self-delay estimator is proposed. By showing that the adaptive blocking matrix (ABM) of the generalized sidelobe canceller (GSC) can estimate the relative time delay between each sensor, the proposed system utilizes the ABM not only for blocking target components in the blocked signal path, but also for estimating the relative time delay. Therefore, the proposed system requires only the GSC structure while maintaining the system performance similar to the conventional system using an additional time delay estimator as a preprocessor. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed system is identical to the conventional system that uses an additional time delay estimation module.

  • When building a network-based real-time control system, a network-induced delay time should be surly considered for real time schedulability to be guaranteed. The network delay time on end-to-end communication has been analyzed theoretically and modeled mathematically from many previous works. There also exist any other delay element not considered before. In this paper, the remote feedback control system using the CAN protocol is proposed to control three axes´ manipulator arm and the application layer of CAN is modeled to analyze the delay elements defined by three types of time delay: Software delay time, Controller delay time, and Access delay time, in details. The analyzed results are used as an important component to determine PID gains of the proposed system. The effect of the delay time on the control performance is evaluated by com paring the response characteristics of the control system through simulation.

  • The various services that a broadband integrated services digital network (B-ISDN) carries, have a wide range of delay, delay jitter and cell loss probability requirements. Design of appropriate control schemes for B-ISDN is an extremely important and challenging problem. In this paper, we proposes a priority control scheme with a delay counter and a cell counter per each class type. The priority control for required service quality is performed with delay/loss factor obstained by comparing window counter with cell counter. The performance of proposed control scheme is estimated by computer simulation.

  • Supporting QoS over multihop wireless mesh networks is difficult because end-to-end delay increases quickly with the increasing number of hops. This paper introduces a novel multichannel time-division multiple-access media access control (McTMAC) protocol that can help to efficiently reduce delay over multihop networks. Performance evaluation results demonstrate that McTMAC outperforms existing alternative protocols. The max-delay can be reduced by as much as 60% by using McTMAC.
