It is generally accepted that fracture toughness of fiber-reinforced polymer composites is affected by loading rate in an atmospheric presure condition. For a present study, the loading rate effect on the fracture toughness of fiber-reinforced laminated composites in the hydrostatic pressure condition was investigated. For this purpose, fracture tests have been conducted using carbon/epoxy composites applying three steps of the strain rate at 270 MPa hydrostatic pressure condition. The loading rates applied were 0.05%/sec, 0.25%/sec, and 0.55%/sec. Fracture toughness was determined from the work factor approach as a function of applied loading rate. The result showed that fracture toughness decreased as the loading rate increased. Specifically, the fracture toughness decreased 12% as the loading rate increased from 0.05%/sec to 0.55%/sec.
It has been cleared in previous author's paper that the fatigue life before the pitting on the rolling contact surface with lubricant are influenced by the wear amount. In this study, the wear type has been clarified when wear amount is extremely large such as the case without lubricant. The test of rolling contact fatigue has been conducted under two different of herzian pressures and three different of slide ratios without lubricant. In addition, residual stress and half-value breadth using X-ray diffraction on worn surface have been measured as well as the wear amount. The results show that the pitting type wear by rolling contact fatigue has not been occurred when the wear amount is considerably large. Thus this type of wear has been deduced by the fatigue wear depending on delamination theory.
The post ion implantation has been applied to modify early-grown BN layer and improve the adhesion of the BN films. The effect of ion implantation doses on microstructure and interlayer was investigated by FTIR and HRTEM. And the hardness and delamination life time of N+-implanted BN films were measured. With increasing the ion dose up to $5.0\times10^{15}\textrm{atoms/cm}^2$,the change of IR spectrum is observed. At $5.0\times10^{16}\textrm{atoms/cm}^2$, a drastic transition of cubic phase into hexagonal phase is detected. The change of microstructure of early-grown layers by ion implantation is confirmed using HRTEM. Both microhardness and delamination life time of BN films increase with ion dose. The modification model of early-grown BN layers is briefly discussed based on the displacement per atom and excess boron in the BN film induced by ion irradiation.
In this paper, polyimide (PI) surface was modified by UV Laser with a low laser fluence and investigated changes of surface geometry and chemical characteristics by SEM (scanning electron microscope), X-ray diffraction (XRD), XPS (x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) and the measurements of contact angle of water. PI surface was peeled off and modified with microstructure fabrications by photochemical ablation over the laser fluence of 50 mJ/cm2. As laser fluence increased, delamination of PI surface was occurred largely and strongly. In chemical characteristics, the O/C and N/C atomic ratios increased and contact angle decreased from $80^{\circ}$ to $40^{\circ}$.
In this study, the relation between the performance degradation of SOFC single cell and the increase of polarization resistance for the cathode is investigated. $Pr_{0.3}Sr_{0.7}Co_{0.3}Fe_{0.7}O_3$(PSCF3737, $19.4{\times}10^{-6}K^{-1}$) and $Gd_{0.1}Ce_{0.9}O_2$ (CGO91, $12{\times}10^{-6}K^{-1}$) are used as a cathode and an electrolyte, respectively. The polarization resistance of cathode is increased due to the delamination caused by thermal expansion coefficient difference. The voltage drop with 10%/1000h decline rate occurs during long-term, when the interface between the cathode and the electrolyte is delaminated due to TEC difference.
This paper proposes non-destructive ESPI technique to evaluate inside defects of semiconductor package quantitatively. Inspection system consists of ESPI system, thermal loading system and adiabatic chamber. The technique has high feasibility in non-destructive testing of semiconductor and gives solutions to the drawbacks in previous technique, time-consuming and the difficulty of quantitative evaluation. In result, most of defects are classified in delamination, from which it is inferred to the insufficiency of adhesive strength between layers and nonhomogeneous heat spread. The $90\%$ of tested samples have a delamination defect started at the around of the chip which may be related to heat spread design.
This study has evaluated the wear behavior of PTA (Plasma Transferred Arc) Inconel 625 and Stellite 6 overlays on Nimonic 80A substrate. Nimonic 80A alloy was also included for comparison. In order to evaluate the wear performance, three-body abrasive wear test and pin-on-disk dry sliding wear test were performed. Microstructural development during the solidification of deposits is also discussed. Wear test results show that the wear rate of Stellite 6 deposit is lower than that of Inconel 625 deposit and Nimonic 80A. The sliding wear resistance of overlay deposits follows a similar trend to the abrasive wear resistance, but for Nimonic 80A. The main wear mechanisms were abrasive wear for Inconel 625 deposit, adhesive wear and delamination for Stellite 6 deposit in pin-on-disk dry sliding wear test and ploughing in three-body abrasive wear test. Cross sectional examinations of the worn surface of pin specimens after pin-on-disk dry sliding wear test implies that the plastic deformation near worn surface has occurred during the wear testing.
The objective of this study is to develop finite element analysis technique to predict the strength reduction of deteriorated reinforced concrete beams and their strengthening capacity. In order to consider the effect of rebar corrosion, a tension stiffening model is proposed and area reduction of rebars due to corrosion is considered. For the analysis of strengthened deteriorated RC beams, one dimensional truss element and an interface element are introduced for models of the strengthening composite and the interface between concrete and composite to simulate delamination or discontinuous behavior at the interface. Then, analyses for deteriorated RC beams strengthened with glass fiber reinforced epoxy panel (GFREP) are carried out to predict both flexural failure and plate-end delamination failure. Finally, analysis results are verified with experimental results.
Impact behaviors of the large deformable composites of Kevlar fiber reinforced composites of different preform structures have been investigated. An analytic tool was developed to characterize the impact behavior of the Kevlar composites. The image analysis technique, and deply technique were employed to develop energy balance equation under impact loading. An energy method was employed to establish the impact energy absorption mechanism of Kevlar multiaxial warp knitted composites. The total impact energy was classified into four categories including delamination energy, membrane energy, bending energy and rebounding energy under low velocity impact. Membrane and bending energy were calculated from the image analysis of the deformed shape of impacted specimen and delamination energy was calculated using the deplying technique. Also, the impact behavior of Kevlar composites under high velocity impact of full penetration of the composite specimen was studied. The energy absorption mechanisms under high velocity impact were modelled and the absorbed energy was classified into global deformation energy, shear-out energy, deformation energy and fiber breakage energy. The total energy obtained from the model corresponded reasonably well with the experimental results.
