  • The delamination along the annual ring on the cross-section of laminae and the bonding strength according to the tangential angle between laminae were evaluated for the production of 3-ply cross-laminated timber (CLT) using domestic larch. Since there is no standard for CLT in Korea, the production and test of specimens for bonding strength followed the standard procedure of "Structural glued laminated timber" (KS F 3021). The standard specifies to exclude any measurement from the cracks of timbers resulted from drying or knots during delamination test of the glued laminated timbers. However, the failure of cross-sectional tissues along the annual rings was observed near the glue-line of all specimens during the delamination test. Because this phenomenon can generate defects in the CLT that may be exposed to various temperatures and relative humidities after the actual construction, the delamination percentage was measured by including this wood failure. As a result, the delamination percentage of the CLT which had been combined in such a way that the annual rings of outer lamina were directed inward was the lowest, which was around 13%, regardless of the annual ring direction of the middle lamina. On the other hand, the delamination percentage of the CLT which had been combined in such a way that the annual rings of outer lamina were directed outward was the highest, which was around 26%. Furthermore, end-split occurred in the outer lamina during the drying process of the boiling delamination test, which affected the delamination percentage. Therefore, the soaking delamination test was found to be more appropriate for evaluating the delamination strength of CLT. The block shear strength of larch CLT was $3.9{\pm}0.9$ MPa on average, which was 46% lower than the block shear strength requirement (7.1 MPa) of the standard, but satisfied the criteria of the block shear strength (3.5 MPa) of the European Standard (prEN 16351: 2013).

  • The tapping test has simplicity of procedure for detection of the damage in aircraft structure. However, the result of tapping test depends on the subjective experience of inspector. In this paper, more objective tapping test has proposed. The impact force histories and tapping sounds are used as reference data to evaluate the delamination. The WT(wavelet transform) is used to decompose the test data. From the results, we could know that high frequency components of force and sound are reduced due to delamination in composite laminate. On these results, the tapping force and sound caused by tapping could be used for the reference data to evaluate the delamination in composite structure.

  • Previous study showed that delamination region in concrete structures can be successfully visualized using mode shapes of delaminated concrete section. However, modal tests for this purpose to obtain mode shapes of the delaminated concrete section may not be applicable in practice since, to correctly obtain the mode shapes of the section, the location and the shape of the delamination region in a structure should be known in advance. Unfortunately those are normally unknown in a real structure. Therefore, a moving forward test method may be useful to obtain the mode shapes of the concrete section when the location and the shape of the delamination region are not known. In this study, impact-echo testing based mode shape estimation technique is proposed and experimentally validated for visualization of delamination region.

  • The investigation of delamination growth behavior in hybrid composite material such as FRMLs should be considered delamination growth rate, dA_D/da$ using the delamination shape factor, $f_S$ instead of traditional fracture mechanics parameters. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the relationship between delamination element (i. e. delamination width, b, delamination contour, c, delamination shape factor, $f_S$ and delamination growth rate, dA_D/da$) and delamination growth in FRMLs under cyclic bending moment. The delamination shape formed along the fatigue crack between aluminum layer and glass fiber/epoxy layer are measured by scanning method. The details of study are as follow : ⅰ) Relationship between crack length, a and delamination width, b. ⅱ) Variation of delamination growth rate, dA_D/da$ was attendant on delamination shape factors, $f_{S1}$, $f_{S2}$, $f_{S3}$. The test result indicated the delamination growth behavior depends in delamination element such as delamination width, b, delamination shape factors, $f_{S1}$, $f_{S2}$, $f_{S3}$.

  • To investigate the influence of manufacturing environment on bonding performance of mixed cross laminated wood (CLT) using polyurethane (PUR) adhesive, a boiling water soak delamination test according to the temperature and relative humidity was conducted. The 5-ply mixed CLT consisted of Japanese Larch for external and middle layer and yellow poplar for internal layer. The PUR adhesives with different opening times of 10 and 30 minutes were used. The mixed CLT was manufactured according to pressing times of PUR and manufacturing environments of summer and winter. In case of summer environment, the delamination rate of the mixed CLT with pressing time of 4 hours using a PUR adhesive with open time of 10 minutes met the requirements of KS F 2081. In case of winter environment, the delamination rate of the mixed CLT didn't meet the requirements of KS standard. However, it was possible to confirm the effect of improving the adhesive performance by adjusting the pressing time according to the open time of the adhesive under the manufacturing conditions. The delamination rate of CLT with open time 30 minutes PUR, manufactured by indirect moisture supply methods was 11.2% better than direct moisture supply methods. As a result of delamination test in the same condition of relative humidity and adhesive, it was found that the temperature of manufacturing environment influences the adhesive performance.

  • Although the previous researches evaluated the fatigue behavior of glass fiber/epoxy laminates using the traditional fracture mechanism, their researches were not sufficient to do it: the damage zone of glass fiber/epoxy laminates was occurred at the delamination zone instead of the crack-metallic damages. Thus, previous researches were not applicable to the fatigue behavior of glass fiber/epoxy laminates. The major purpose of this study was to evaluate delamination behavior using the relationship between crack length and delamination width in hybrid composite material such as Al/GFRP laminate. The details of investigation were as follows : 1) Relationship between crack length and delamination width, 2) Relationship between delamination aspect ratio and delamination area rate, 3) Variation of delamination growth rate is attendant on delamination shape factors. The test results indicated that the delamination growth rate depends on delamination width delamination aspect ratio and delamination shape factors.

The Effect of Delamination Shape Factor, $f_s$ on the Delamination Growth Rate, $dA_D/da$ in FRMLs (층간분리 형상계수($F_s$)가 FRMLs의 층간분리 성장률($dA_D/da$)에 미치는 영향)

  • Most previous researches for the hybrid composite materials such as FRMLs(Al/AFRP, Al/GFRP) have evaluated the fatigue delamination behavior using the traditional fracture mechanism. However, most previous researches have not generally been firmed yet. Because delamination growth behavior in hybrid composite should be consider delamination growth rate, $dA_D$/da using the delamination shape factors, fs instead of traditional fracture mechanic parameters. The major purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between delamination shape factor, fs and delamination growth rate, $dA_D$ . And a propose parameter on the delamination aspect ratio, b/a. The details of the study are as follow : 1) Relationship between crack length, a and delamination width,b. 2) Relationship between delamination aspect ration, b/a and delamination area rate,($(A_D)_{N}(A_D)_{ALL}$. 3) Variation of delamination growth rate, $dA_D/da$ was attendant on delamination shape factors, $fs_1$, $fs_2$, $fs_3$. The test results indicated the delamination growth rate depends on delamination shape factors.

  • Drawing process of the high carbon steel wire with high speed is usually performed at room temperature using multi pass. Tn the multi pass drawing, temperature rise affects the mechanical properties of the final product. The excessive temperature rise during the deformation promotes the occurrence of delamination, and deteriorates the torsion property and durability of wire. This paper investigates the occurrence of delamination in the wire through the torsion test and the evaluation of wire temperature. The excessive wire temperature ieads to the occurrence of delamination. Based on the calculation of the wire temperature, a new pass schedule, that can prevent the delamination due to the excessive wire temperature rise, is designed through the isothermal pass schedule.

  • Wire drawing process of the high carbon steel with a high speed is usually conducted at room temperature using a number of passes or reductions through consequently located dies. In the multi-pass drawing process, temperature rise in each pass affects the mechanical properties of the final product such as bending, torsion, and tensile property, etc. This temperature rise during the deformation promotes the occurrence of delamination, and deteriorates the torsion property and durability of wire. This study investigates the occurrence of delamination in the wire through the torsion test and the evaluation of wire temperature. The excessive wire temperature leads to the occurrence of the delamination. Based on the calculation of the wire temperature, a new pass schedule, which can prevent the delamination due to the excessive wire temperature rise, is designed through the isothermal pass schedule.
