The effect of counterpart roughness on abrasive wear characteristics of side plate materials of FRP ship, which were composed of glass fiber and unsaturated polyester resin composites, were investigated at ambient temperature by pin-an-disc friction test. The friction coefficient, wear rate and cumulative wear volume of these materials against SiC abrasive paper were determined experimentally. The wear rate of these materials decreased rapidly with sliding distance and then maintained a constant value. It was increased as counterpart roughness was rougher in a wear test. The cumulative wear volume tended to increase nonlinearly with sliding distance and depended on applied load and sliding speed for these composites. It could be verified by SEM photograph of fracture surface that major failure mechanisms were overlapping layers, microcutting, deformation of resin, delamination, and cracking.
In most engineering structures, fracture often takes place due to fatigue. Therefore, many studies about the effect of the various mode-mixities on fatigue characteristics have been performed. However, most of the former studies only address metal/metal interfaces or delamination of composite. In this study, the fatigue characteristics of composite/metal interfaces are investigated. The fatigue tests were performed using single leg bending(SLB)specimens that comprise composite and steel bonded to each other using co-cure bonding method. This paper focuses on fatigue characteristics depending on different mode ratios$(G_{II}/G_T$. The overall results obtained in this study show that the crack propagation rate increases with the mode II loading component.
In recent, the capacity of a commercial wind power has reached the range of 6 MW, with large plants being built world-wide on land and offshore. The rotor blades and the nacelle are exposed to external loads. Wind power system concepts are reviewed, and loadings by wind and gravity as important factors for the mechanical performance of the materials are considered. So, the mechanical properties of fiber composite materials are discussed. Plain woven fabrics Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) are advanced materials which combine the characteristics of the light weight, high stiffness, strength and chemical stability. However, Plain woven CFRP composite have a lot of problems, especially delamination, compared with common materials. Therefore, the aim of this work is to estimate the mechanical properties using the tensile specimen and to evaluate strain using the CNF specimen on plain woven CFRP composites. For the strain, we tried to apply to plain woven CFRP using Digital Image Correlation (DIC) method and strain gauge. DIC method can evaluate a strain change so it can predict a location of fracture.

In nano-imprint lithography (NIL) process, which has shown to be a good method to fabricate polymeric patterns, several kinds of pattern defects due to thermal effects during polymer flow and mold release operation have been reported. A typical defect in NIL process with high aspect ratio and low resist thickness pattern is a resist fracture during the mold release operation. It seems due to interfacial adhesion between polymer and mold. However, in the present investigation, FEM simulation of NIL molding process was carried out to predict the defects of the polymer pattern and to optimize the process by FEA. The embossing operation in NIL process was investigated in detail by FEM. From the analytical results, it was found that the lateral flow of polymer resin and the applied pressure in the embossing operation induce the weld line and the drastic lateral strain at the edge of pattern. It was also shown that the low polymer-thickness result in the delamination of polymer from the substrate. It seems that the above phenomena cause the defects of the final polymer pattern. To reduce the defect, it is important to check the initial resin thickness.
Fiber-metal laminates (FMLs) and polymer matrix composites (PMCs) are formed in various ways. In particular, FMLs in which aluminum is laminated as a reinforced layer are widely used. Also, glass fiber-reinforced plastics (GFRPs) are generally applied as fiber laminates. The bonding interface layer between the aluminum and fiber laminate exhibits low strength when subjected to hot press fabrication in the event of delamination fracture at the interface. This study presents a simple method for strengthening the interface bonding between the aluminum metal and GFRP layer of FML composites. The surfaces of the aluminum interface layer are engraved with three kinds of patterns by using the laser machine before the hot press works. Furthermore, the effect of the laser patterns on the interfacial toughness is investigated. The interfacial toughness was evaluated by the energy release rate (G) using an asymmetric double cantilever bending specimen (ADCB). From the experimental results, it was shown that the strip type pattern (STP) has the most proper pattern shape in GFRP/Al FML composites. Therefore, this will be considered a useful method for the safety assessment of FML composite structures.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of surface treatment and composition of reinforcement material on fracture strength of fiber reinforced composite inlay bridges. The materials used for this study were I-beam, U-beam TESCERA ATL system and ONE STEP(Bisco, IL, USA). Two kinds of surface treatments were used; the silane and the sandblast. The specimens were divided into 11 groups through the composition of reinforcing materials and the surface treatments. On the dentiform, supposing the missing of Maxillary second pre-molar and indirect composite inlay bridge cavities on adjacent first pre-molar disto-occlusal cavity, first molar mesio-occlusal cavity was prepared with conventional high-speed inlay bur. The reinforcing materials were placed on the proximal box space and build up the composite inlay bridge consequently. After the curing, specimen was set on the testing die with ZPC. Flexural force was applied with universal testing machine (EZ-tester; Shimadzu, Japan). at a cross-head speed of 1 mm/min until initial crack occurred. The data was analyzed using one-way ANOVA/Scheffes post-hoc test at 95% significance level. Groups using I-beam showed the highest fracture strengths (p<0.05) and there were no significant differences between each surface treatment (p>0.05) Most of the specimens in groups that used reinforcing material showed delamination. 1. The use of I-beam represented highest fracture strengths (p<0.05) 2. In groups only using silane as a surface treatment showed highest fracture strength, but there were no significant differences between other surface treatments (p>0.05). 3. The reinforcing materials affect the fracture strength and pattern of composites inlay bridge. 4 The holes at the U-beam did not increase the fracture strength of composites inlay bridge.
Purpose: Fracture strength of all-ceramic 3-unit fixed partial dentures manufactured by CAD/CAM and copy-milling systems were evaluated. Methods: Zirconia cores were made by milling the pre-sintered zirconia block by CAD/CAM or copy milling method followed by subsequent sintering. By building-up the corresponding porcelains on the core, all-ceramic bridges were fabricated, and those were evaluated in comparison with PFM fixed partial denture. Results: During the flexural test of the 3-unit PFM bridge, the porcelain started to chip or break at 507.28(${\pm}62.82$)kgf and the metal framework did not break until the maximum load level of 800kgf which was set in the testing instrument of this study. However, among all-ceramic restoration test groups, Everest(EV) group showed a peeling off or breakage of the porcelain from 365.64(${\pm}64.96$)kgf and the core was broken at 491.77(${\pm}55.62$)kgf. Those values of Zirkonzahn(ZR) were 431.03(${\pm}58.47$)kgf and 602.74(${\pm}48.44$)kgf, respectively. The break strength of the porcelain of PFM(PM) group was significantly higher than that of EV (p<0.05) group and there was no significant difference when comparing to that of ZR (p>0.05). ZR group showed higher break strength than that of EV group however there was no significant difference (p>0.05). The break strength of cores were in the increasing order of EV < ZR < PM (p<0.05). Conclusion: We could find that even though the PM group fractured at much higher value than all-ceramic cores, the breakage values of the porcelain of PM group with crack formation or delamination, which will be regarded as clinical failure, was significantly higher than that of EV group and not significantly higher than that of ZR group at p-values of 0.05. The break strength of ZR group was higher than that of EV group at an insignificant level(p>0.05).
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM. Zirconia-based restorations have the common technical complication of delamination, or porcelain chipping, from the zirconia core. Thus the shear bond strength between the zirconia core and the veneering porcelain requires investigation in order to facilitate the material's clinical use. PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bonding strength of the porcelain veneer to the zirconia core and to other various metal alloys (high noble metal alloy and base metal alloy). MATERIAL AND METHODS. 15 rectangular ($4\times4\times9mm$) specimens each of zirconia (Cercon), base metal alloy (Tillite), high noble metal alloy (Degudent H) were fabricated for the shear bond strength test. The veneering porcelain recommended by the manufacturer for each type of material was fired to the core in thickness of 3mm. After firing, the specimens were embedded in the PTFE mold, placed on a mounting jig, and subjected to shear force in a universal testing machine. Load was applied at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min until fracture. The average shear strength (MPa) was analyzed with the oneway ANOVA and the Tukey's test ($\alpha$= .05). The fractured specimens were examined using SEM and EDX to determine the failure pattern. RESULTS. The mean shear strength ($\pm\;SD$) in MPa was 25.43 ($\pm\;3.12$) in the zirconia group, 35.87 ($\pm\;4.23$) in the base metal group, 38.00 ($\pm\;5.23$) in the high noble metal group. The ANOVA showed a significant difference among groups, and the Tukey' s test presented a significant difference between the zirconia group and the metal group. Microscopic examination showed that the failure primarily occurred near the interface with the residual veneering porcelain remaining on the core. CONCLUSION. There was a significant difference between the metal ceramic and zirconia ceramic group in shear bond strength. There was no significant difference between the base metal alloy and the high noble metal alloy.

Nanomaterials possess unique mechanical, physical, and chemical properties. They are small, and have an ultrahigh surface area, making them suitable for air filter applications. Electrospinning has been recognized as an efficient technique for fabricating polymer nanofibers. In order to determine the optimum manufacturing conditions, the effects of several electrospinning process parameters on the diameter, orientation, and distribution of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber are analyzed. To improve interlaminar fracture toughness and suppress delamination in the form of laminated non-woven fibers by using a heat roller, the performances of filter efficiency and pressure drop achieved with PAN nanofiber air filter are evaluated experimentally.

[ $Nb/MoSi_2-ZrO_2$ ] laminate composites have been successfully fabricated by alternately stacking $MoSi_2-ZrO_2$ powder layer and Nb sheet, followed by hot pressing in a graphite mould. The fabricating parameters were selected as hot press temperatures. The instrumented Charpy impact test was carried out at the room temperature in order to investigate the relationship between impact properties and fabricating temperatures. The interfacial shear strength between $MoSi_2-ZrO_2$ and Nb, which is associated with the fabricating temperature and the growth of interfacial reaction layer, is also discussed. The plastic deformation of Nb sheet and the interfacial delamination were macroscopically observed. The $Nb/MoSi_2-ZrO_2$ laminate composites had the maximum impact value when fabricated at 1623K, accompanying the increase of fracture displacement and crack propagation energy. The interfacial shear strength of $Nb/MoSi_2-ZrO_2$ laminate composites increased with the growth of interfacial reaction layer, which resulted from the increase of fabricating temperature. there is an appropriate interfacial shear strength for the enhancement of impact value of $Nb/MoSi_2-ZrO_2$ laminate composites. A large increase of interfacial shear strength restrains the plastic deformation of Nb sheet.
