  • In this study, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was used to estimate the degree of rice polishing. As-threshed rice seeds were dehusked and polished for different times, and the resulting grains were analyzed using LIBS. Various atomic, ionic, and molecular emissions were identified in the LIBS spectra. Their correlation with the amount of polished-off matter was investigated. Na I and Rb I emission line intensities showed linear sensitivity in the widest range of polished-off-matter amount. Thus, univariate models based on those lines were developed to predict the weight percent of polished-off matter and showed 3-5 % accuracy performances. Partial least squares-regression (PLS-R) was also applied to develop a multivariate model using Si I, Mg I, Ca I, Na I, K I, and Rb I emission lines. It outperformed the univariate models in prediction accuracy (2 %). Our results suggest that LIBS can be a reliable tool for authenticating the degree of rice polishing, which is closed related to nutrition, shelf life, appearance, and commercial value of rice products.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the yield and greenness of "Nogwonchalbyeo" on the basis of different date of transplanting and harvesting. Delay in heading was observed in the plants transplanted later but no effect on heading was observed due to different levels of nitrogen fertilizer. Percentage of green color in dehusked rice was higher in the grains of rice transplanted on 10th June. An increasing trend was observed in the yield with the delay in the date of transplanting, maximum yield was observed in the rice planted on 10th June but a decrease in yield was recorded if transplanted after 15th June. Similarly, yield also increase as the days for harvesting increased until 37 days after heading but beyond 37 days decreasing trend was observed in yield. Based on the above findings it can be suggested that 4~6 June and 9kg/10a are the optimum dates of transplanting and amount of nitrogen while 3 5~37 days after heading is the best time for harvesting of "Nogwonchalbyeo".

  • 'Daname' is a foxtail millet(Setaria italica Beauv.) variety developed and registered by Department of Southern Area Crop Science, NICS, RDA in 2014. This variety which collected from IT252182 was developed through pure line selection. 'Daname' is a early-maturing variety having 100 days of growth period from seeding to harvesting in Milyang of Korea. The culm length is about 97 cm which is 20cm shorter culm length than standard variety 'Hwanggeumjo', and it showed tolerant to lodging in field. The panicle shape is a cylindrical and the length is about 19cm. According to the grain, seed color and dehusked grain colors are orange and yellow and endosperm characteristic is non-glutinous. The yield performance of this variety was about $3.81t\;ha^{-1}$ in local adaptability test from 2013 to 2014 and it showed similar with standard variety 'Hwanggeumjo'. As the addition amount of 'Daname' in rice increased from 0% to 30% and 100%, the antioxidant ability of 'Daname' added rice and hardness/stickiness balances were increased. But we could not find out the difference of hardness/stickiness balances between 0%and 10% addition. So, 10% addition amount was concluded to increase antioxidant ability regardless eating quality of cooked rice. (Variety registration No. 6243)
