This study was conducted to determine the smoke component concentration and the smoke distribution in the cambridge filter pad and cigarette filter with stalk position and grade of Korean leaf tobaccos. 12 grades of flue-cured and burley leaf tobaccos which were taken from the Kim-cheon and Ock-cheon leaf tobacco processing factory were used for this study. Six kinds of smoke components such as tar, nicotine, water, carbon monoxide(CO), carbon dioxide($CO_2$) puff No. collected in the cambridge filter pad and cigarette filter were analyzed. Also, nicotine/tar, CO/tar ratio were calculated from the analytical data. Puff no., CO, and $CO_2$ concentration of flue-cured and burley tobacco leaves at high stalk position were higher than those of low stalk position, and these components were increased in high grade of leaf tobacco. Compared with flue-cured tobacco, burley tobacco showed a little values of puff no., nicotine, and tar concentration. The pH range of burley tobaccos was broader than that of flue-cured tobaccos, and the ammonia concentration of burley tobaccos was significantly higher than that of flue-cured tobaccos. The pH value and ammonia concentration of burley tobaccos were decreased as stalk position of leaf tobaccos decreased. The distribution of smoke components collected in the cambridge filter pad and cigarette filter was different with a different grade and stalk position of tobacco leaves. In high stalk position of tobacco leaves, the portion of smoke components collected in the cambridge filter pad was also increased. The average nicotine, water, and tar removal efficiency by a cigarette filter in a flue-cured tobacco were 37%, 64%, and 48%, respectively. Compared with flue-cured tobaccos, smoke components of burley tobaccos had high nicotine and low water removal efficiency by a cigarette filter. The average ratio of nicotine/tar and CO/tar of flue-cured tobaccos and burley tobaccos were 0.097, 1.22, 0.094, and 0.97, in order. Nicotine/tar ratio was decreased and CO/tar ratio was increased in low stalk position.
This study was conducted to obtain the basic information for breeding of burley(N. tabacum cv. burley) and sun-cured tobacco(N. tabacum cv. sun-cured) variety. Two burley(Burley 21, KB 108), and T.I. 1068 and three sun-cured varieties(Yeonbyeon 3, Jaheungyeon and Jaraehong) were diallel crossed and 15 combinations of F$_1$generations were made in 1998, respectively. Six parental varieties, 15 F$_1$s were grown under the complete randomized block design with 3 replications at Chonju Experiment Station, Korea Ginseng & Tobacco Research Institute in 2000. The data of 12 quantitative characters were measured for degree of heterosis. The results obtained are as follows. Heterosis of F$_1$generation was positive in weight per leaf, plant height, stem diameter, yield, leaf length and total alkaloid content. Cross combinations between either Burley 21 or KB 108 and sun-cured varieties showed comparatively high heterosis in each characters.
This Study was conducted to estimate the degree of dominance and gene frequency of some sueful characters in tobacco. The eight parents and a set of 28 crosses of F'1s was F'2s were used as materials, and planted on oriental's and burley cultivated system as randomized block designs, respectively. The observed characters were six agronomic characters which were plant height, number of leaves per plant, leaf length, leaf width, days to flowering and yield, and the data obtained from the experiment were analyzed from methods by Hayman's and Jinks. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. In Vr-Wr graphical analysis, number of leaves per plant, leaf length, days to flowering and yield were found to be inherited in partial dominance, and plant height was over dominance to be similar to complete dominance, but leaf width was inherited with partial dominance close to complete dominance. 2. In the gene frequency, two varieties Xanthi-Basma and KA 102, for days to flowering and yield had larger number of dominant genes as those were situated near the point of origen. 3. Additive effects of genes(D) were greater than dominance effects of Genes(H) for six agronomic characters except plant height, and mean degree of dominance over all loci was lower than 1 for days to flowering yield, leaf length and number of leaves per plant.
This experiment was conducted to examine estimates of heterosis, degree of dominance, heritability and phenotypic and genotypic correlation for several mutant characters in flue-cured tobacco variety. Significant heterosis was noted, recording 2.73 and 6.16% for leaf width, -6.86 and -4.72 for leaf shape index, 19.8 and 23.4% for bacterial wilt disease index in Fl an4 F2 generation, respectively, and -1.44 for days to flower in F2 generation. And also leaf width was appeared partial dominance in Fl, and leaf shape index in Fl and F2, Leaf width in F2 was appeared overdominance. Estimated heritabilities in the broad sense ranged from 0.77 to 0.87 for plant and stalk height and days to flower, while those of leaf number, leaf length and width, leaf shape index and bacterial wilt disease index ranged from 0.50 to 0.65. And the heritabilities in the narrow sense were appeared 0.64 and 0.72 for stalk and plant height, respectively, and the others were ranged from 0.32 to 0.47 Positive genotpic correlations appeared among plant height, stalk height, leaf length and leaf width, and between leaf shape index ands day to flower. And negative genotypic correlations appeared between leaf shape index and plant height and stalk height and leaf width, and between bacterial wilt disease index and leaf length.
The present study was conducted to compare the relative efficiency of two different haploid breeding methods in tobacco varietal development. A single FI hybrid plant from cross of two flue-cured cultivars of Nicotiana tabacum L., Bright Yellow4(BY4) and NC95, was used to develop the 30 anther derived dihaploid (ADH) lines and maternally-derived dihaploid (MDH) lines utilizing Nicotiana africana, respectively. As compared with mid-parent, mean of ADH lines showed increase in number of leaves, delay in days to flower and narrow in width of leaf. However, no significant differences in the other investigated characters were recognized. MDH lines also showed narrow width of leaf, while no significant differences in the other characters were observed. The variations of the investigated characters were generally greater in ADH than MDH lines. MDH lines had higher height of plant and shorter days to flower than ADH lines, while the other characters did not show remarkable differences. The degree of heritability for each of the characters observed between ADH and MDH was almost the same. The characters showing high heritability value were height of plant, number of leaves, days to flower, and yield, while those showing relatively low value were length of leaf, width of leaf, and total alkaloid content. Predicted gains from selection for increased yield were calculated for both populations(ADH, MDH) and correlated responses associated with selection for yield were estimated. Height of plant, width of leaf, days to flower, and concentration of reduceing sugar would be expected to improve with selection for yield much faster in the MDH population than in the ADH.
In flue-cured tobacco, the relationships between the quality of tobacco leaves (productivity according to quality grade) and specific meteorological factors were noted showing different significances according to different seasons during the growing period of the tobacco plants. The thick leaf high quality was significantly correlated with average temperature in late April, late May, early July and late July. The degree of contribution was greatest in middle May and lowest in late May. In the highest and lowest temperatures, the relations to leaf quality had similar tendency like in the average temperature; the thick leaf low quality showed opposite tendency relative to the high quality in the degrees of correlations and contributions. Amount of precipitation was significantly correlated with the thick leaf high quality in late April, early May, middle May, late June and late July. The degree of positive contribution was shown in order of late April, middle July and early July, and that of negative one was in order of middle June, early June and late June, respectively. Duration of sunshine period was highly associated with thick leaf high quality of tobacco leaves in all of the growing season except for middle April and middle July. The degree of positive contribution was in order of late May, late April, early July and middle July, and that of the negative one was in order of late June, early May, middle June and middle May.
A field experiment was conducted to find out the effects of field productivity, variety and nitrogen rate on the yield, quality, chemical constituents and physical properties of burley cured leaf in three field with different productivity(Degree of field productivity: A ; high, B ; medium, C : low) during successive two years(1988~89). The yield and quality were remarkably lowered when nitrogen fertilizer being applied much in low productive field. As compared with Burley 21, KB101 showed high yield, particularly the yield of KB101 in low productive field was relatively high. The effect of nitrogen rate on the yield was somewhat different according to field productivity and production year. When the nitrogen fertilizer being applied above 22.5kg/10a, the added nitrogen had no effect on the yield. Total nitrogen content of cured leaf grown in low productive field was high while total alkaloid was low, therefore total alkaloid/total nitrogen ratio was remarkably low. The lightness, red and yellow color of cured leaf grown in low productive field was remarkably low. As compared with Burley 21, the contents of total alkaloid and total nitrogen and shatter resistance index of cured leaf was somewhat low, while the filling power, lightness, red and yellow color were slightly high. Total nitrogen content of cured leaf was increased remarkably by nitrogen addition, but total alkaloid was not increased though the nitrogen fertilizer being applied above 22.5kg/10a. The filling power and shatter resistance index of cured leaf grown in high nitrogen plot, and the lightness and yellow color were low while the red color was relatively high. It comes into question that the visual quality being increased as well as increment of yield and nitrogenous compounds by nitrogen addition in high productive field. In low productive field, it is considerable that nitrogen addition for high yield should be prohibited because it causes the decrement of yield and quality, on the contrary.
This experiment was conducted to get the fundamental information about the difference in color and some chemical components of grey flue-cured tobacco cultivated in paddy field to compare with normal tobacco. Cured leaves of NC82 were separated with visual characters into three classes of slight, fair and severe symptoms of grey leaf by percentage of grey parts to whole leaf area, and compared to normal ones. Occurrence of grey leaves tended to be higher in lower stalk position than in upper ones. Cl, Mn and Fe content of grey leaves was much higher when it compared with normal leaves, and within the same leaf, grey parts were increased in Fe, Mn and Cl content than in those of normal parts but there was no appearent difference in total sugar, nicotine and Ca contents. Chemical analysis of grey leaf samples indicated that they contained more Fe, Mn and Cl contents than those of normal leaves. These tendencies in chemical traits were accordance with the degree of grey symptoms. Grey leaves showed remarkably lower b*value and slightly lower L*value than those of normal leaves, while a*value was mostly higher in grey leaves. In general, grey appearence of grey flue-curd tobacco seemed to be from less yellowish color, poorer brightness with more brownish or reddish color.
The present study was conducted to compare the relative efficiency of two different haploid breeding methods in tobacco varietal development. A single F t hybrid plant from cross of two flue-cured cultivars of Nicotiana tabacum L., Bright Yellow4(BY4) and NC 95, was used to develop the 30 dihaploid lines by anther culture(F1-ADH) and maternally-derived doubled haploid utilizing Nicotiana africana(F1-MDH), respectively. As compared with mid-parent, ADH lines showed increasing in number of leaves, delaying in days to flower and narrowing in leaf width. However, no significant differences in the other characters investigated were recognized. MDH lines also showed narrow leaf width, while no significant differences in the other characters were observed. The variations of the characters investigated were generally greater in ADH than MDH lines. MDH lines had higher plant height and shorter days to flower than ADH lines, while other characters did not show remarkable differences. The degree of heritability for each of the characters observed between ADH and MDH was almost the same. The characters showing high heritability value were plant height, leaf number, days to flower, and yield, while those showing relatively low value were leaf length, leaf width, and total alkaloid content. Predicted gains from selection for increased yield were calculated for both populations(F1-ADH, F1-MDH) and correlated responses associated with selection for yield were estimated. Plant height, leaf width, days to flower, percent reducing sugar and disease resistance would be expected to improve with selection for yield much faster in the MDH population than in the ADH.
Experiment was conducted to get the information about physico-chemical properties of flue-cured tobacco on the degree of maturity cultivated in paddy-upland rotated field, and compared to upland ones. For the samples of this experiment, 3~4 leaves at each stalk position were harvested from the bottom of plants. Physico-chemical properties of cured leaves were determined from the samples collected at weekly intervals, and of obtained from 4 stalk positions. For the degree of maturity, harvested leaves were separated with visual characters into four classes such as immature, mature, ripe, and mellow. Regardless of stalk position, the order of shrinkage rate with length and width of leaves was mellow> immature> ripe> mature, and ripe leaves from paddy field showed higher shrinkage rate than those of upland. Nicotine and total nitrogen contents were decreased with the degree of maturity while reducing sugar content were showed a reverse tendency. Ripe leaves from paddy field had lower reducing sugar contents, comparing with upland tobacco. Filling capacity of cured leaves from paddy field was decreased with degree of maturity, but there was no difference between upland and paddy tobacco. Shatter index was increased in the oeder of immature > mellow > mature > ripe. Chemical components of cigarette smoke from paddy field tobacco were little higher in $CO_2$ total particulate matter and tar contents, while combustibility was little lower than that of upland tobacco. It was also evaluated that paddy field tobacco was unfavorable for the non-volatile organic and higher fatty acids contents comparing with upland tobacco.
