  • A Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma is shown in the present investigation to be effective of phenol degradation in the aqueous solutions in batch reactor with continuous air bubbling. Removal of phenol and effects of various parameters on the removal efficiency in the aqueous solution with high-voltage streamer discharge plasma are studied. The effect of 1st voltage (80 ~ 220 V), air flow rate (3 ~ 7 L/min), pH (3 ~ 11), electric conductivity of solution (4.16 ${\mu}S$/cm, deionized water) ~ 16.57 mS/cm (addition of NaCl 10 g/L) and initial phenol concentration (2.5 ~ 20.0 mg/L) were investigated. The observed results showed that phenol degradation was higher in the basic solution than that of the acidic. The optimum values on the 1st voltage and air flow rate for phenol degradation were 140 V and 6 L/min, respectively. It was considered that absorbance variation of $UV_{254}$ of phenol solution can be use as an indirect indicator of change of the non-biodegradable organic compounds within the treated phenol solution. Electric conductivity was not influenced the phenol degradation. To obtain the removal efficiency of phenol and COD of phenol over 97 % (initial phenol concentration, 10.0 mg/L), 80 min and 120 min were need, respectively. Phenol and COD degradation showed a pseudo-first order kinetics.

  • In this research, the photocatalytic degradation of dibenzothiophene (DBT) in $TiO_2$ aqueous suspension has been studied. $TiO_2$ photocatalysts are prepared by a sol-gel method. The dominant anatase-structure on $TiO_2$ particles is observed after calcining the $TiO_2$ gel at $500^{\circ}C$ for 1hr. Photocatalysts with various transition metals (Nd, Pd and Pt) loading are tested to evaluate the effect of transition metal impurities on photodegradation. The photodegradation efficiencies with $TiO_2$ including Pt and Pd are higher than pure $TiO_2$ powder. Also we investigated the applicability of $H_2O_2$ to increase the efficiency of the $TiO_2$ photocatalytic degradation of dibenzothiophene. The degradation efficiency increases with increasing dosage of $H_2O_2$ in the range of 0.01M to 0.1M . The effect of pH is investigated; we obtained the maximum photodegradation efficiency at pH 5. In addition, the intermediate analysis found dihydroxyl -dibenzothiophene as a reaction intermediate of dibenzothiophene during the photodegradation.

  • In order to investigate the accuracy and applicability of steel equivalent constitutive model, the calculated results were compared with typical tests of steel frames under static and dynamic loading patterns firstly. Secondly, four widely used models for time history analysis of steel frames were compared to discuss the applicability and efficiency of different methods, including shell element model, multi-scale model, equivalent constitutive model (ECM) and traditional beam element model (especially bilinear model). Four-story steel frame models of above-mentioned finite element methods were established. The structural deformation, failure modes and the computational efficiency of different models were compared. Finally, the equivalent constitutive model was applied in seismic incremental dynamic analysis of a ten-floor steel frame and compared with the cyclic hardening model without considering damage and degradation. Meanwhile, the effects of damage and degradation on the seismic performance of steel frame were discussed in depth. The analysis results showed that: damages would lead to larger deformations. Therefore, when the calculated results of steel structures subjected to rare earthquake without considering damage were close to the collapse limit, the actual story drift of structure might already exceed the limit, leading to a certain security risk. ECM could simulate the damage and degradation behaviors of steel structures more accurately, and improve the calculation accuracy of traditional beam element model with acceptable computational efficiency.

  • Dual-frequency ultrasound assisted photocatalysis (DUAP) method was proposed to degrade a stable organic model effluent, cresol red (CR), using the prepared $Fe^{3+}$-doped $TiO_2$ with active carbon fiber loading ($Fe^{3+}-TiO_2/ACF$) as photocatalyst. The influence of key factors, including Fe doping amount and power density of dual-frequency ultrasounds (20/40 kHz), on the degradation efficiency was investigated. The degradation efficiency rises to 98.7% in 60 min accompanied by the color removal of CR liquid samples from yellow to colorless transparent at optimal conditions. A synergy index of 1.40 was yielded by comparison with single ultrasound assisted photocatalysis (SUAP) and the photocatalysis without ultrasound assisted (UV/$TiO_2$), indicating that a clear synergistic effect exists for the DUAP process. Obvious enhancement of degradation efficiency for the DUAP process should be attributed to production of large amount of free radicals by strong cavitational effects of dual ultrasounds.

  • The efficiency of silicon solar cells is approaching a theoretical limit referred to as 'the state of the art'. Consequently, maintaining efficiency is more productive than pursuing improvements the last room for limiting efficiency. One of the primary considerations in silicon module conservation is the occurrence of failures and degradation. Degradation can be mitigated during the cell manufacturing stage, unlike physical and spontaneous failure. It is mostly because the chemical reaction is triggered by the carrier generation of thermal and light injection, an inherent aspect of the solar cell environment. Therefore, numerous researchers and cell manufacturers are engaged in implementing mitigation strategies based on the physical degradation mechanism.

  • When sunlight irradiates a boron-doped p-type solar cell, the formation of BsO2i decreases the power-conversion efficiency in a phenomenon named light-induced degradation (LID). In this study, we used boron-doped p-type Cz-Si solar cells to monitor this degradation process in relation to irradiation wavelength, intensity and duration of the light source, and investigated the reliability of the LID effects, as well. When halogen light irradiated a substrate, the LID rate increased more rapidly than for irradiation with xenon light. For different intensities of halogen light (e.g., 1 SUN and 0.1 SUN), a lower-limit value of LID showed a similar trend in each case; however, the rate reached at the intensity of 0.1 SUN was three times slower than that at 1 SUN. Open-circuit voltage increased with increasing duration of irradiation because the defect-formation rate of LID was slow. Therefore, we suppose that sufficient time is needed to increase LID defects. After a recovery process to restore the initial value, the lower-limit open-circuit voltage exhibited during the re-degradation process showed a trend similar to that in the first degradation process. We suggest that the proportion of the LID in boron-doped p-type Cz-Si solar cells has high correlation with the normalized defect concentrations (NDC) of BsO2i. This can be calculated using the extracted minority-carrier diffusion-length with internal quantum efficiency (IQE) analysis.

  • The degradation efficiency and catabolism pathways of the different methylxanthines (MXs) in isolated caffeine-tolerant strain Pseudomonas putida CT25 were comprehensively studied. The results showed that the degradation efficiency of various MXs varied with the number and position of the methyl groups on the molecule (i.e., xanthine > 7-methylxanthine ${\approx}$ theobromine > caffeine > theophylline > 1-methylxanthine). Multiple MX catabolism pathways coexisted in strain CT25, and a different pathway would be triggered by various MXs. Demethylation dominated in the degradation of N-7-methylated MXs (such as 7-methylxanthine, theobromine, and caffeine), where C-8 oxidation was the major pathway in the catabolism of 1-methylxanthine, whereas demethylation and C-8 oxidation are likely both involved in the degradation of theophylline. Enzymes responsible for MX degradation were located inside the cell. Both cell culture and cell-free enzyme assays revealed that N-1 demethylation might be a rate-limiting step for the catabolism of the MXs. Surprisingly, accumulation of uric acid was observed in a cell-free reaction system, which might be attributed to the lack of activity of uricase, a cytochrome c-coupled membrane integral enzyme.

  • In the present study, the degradation characteristics of Lindane by Advanced Oxidation Processes(UV/$H_2O_2$, Photo-Fenton process) were studied. The degradation efficiency of Lindane in aqueous solution was investigated at various initial pH values, Fenton's reagent concentrations and initial concentrations of Lindane. GC-ECD was used to analyze lindane. Lindane has not been degraded without application of AOPs over two hours. But, approximately 5% of lindane was degraded with UV or $H_2O_2$ alone. Lindane with UV/$H_2O_2$ process showed approximately 7% higher removal efficiency than $H_2O_2$ process. In the UV/$H_2O_2$ process, the pH values did not affect the removal efficiency. The optimal mole ratio of $H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$ for lindane degradation is about 1.0 in Photo-Fenton process. Also, the experimental results showed that lindane removal efficiency increased with the decrease of initial concentration of lindane. Under the same conditions, the order lindane of removal efficiency is as following : Photo-Fenton process > UV/$H_2O_2$ process > $H_2O_2$ process. In addition, intermediate products were identified by GC-MS techniques. Than PCCH(Pentachlorocyclohexene) was identified as a reaction intermediate of the Photo-Fenton process.

  • The degradation of EBT (Eriochrome Black T) in an aqueous solution was investigated at various values of pH, Ferrate (VI) dosage, initial concentration, aqueous solution temperature. The maximum degradation efficiency was 95.42% at pH 7 and in that experimental condition, the kapp value was 872.87 M-1s-1. The degradation efficiency was proportional to the dosage of Ferrate (VI). Also, the initial rate constant of EBT degradation increased with decreasing of the EBT initial concentration. In addition, the degradation rate of EBT was increased from 74.04% to 95.42% when the temperature in the aqueous solution was increased from 10℃ to 45℃. The activation energy value was 11.9 kJ/mol for EBT degradation. Overall, the results of the degradation experiment showed that Ferrate (VI) could effectively oxidize the EBT in the aqueous phase.

  • This study analyzed the variations in the performance and operation of a 200 kW class micro gas turbine according to performance degradation of compressor and turbine. An in-house code, developed by the present authors and presented in the first part of these series of papers, were used for the analysis. The degradation of compressor and turbine were simulated by modifications in the their performance maps: mass flow rate, pressure ratio and efficiency were decreased from the reference values. Firstly, the variations in the operating conditions (air flow rate, pressure ratio) were predicted for the full load condition. Then, the same analysis were performed for a wide partial load operating range. The change in engine's performance (power output and efficiency) due to the component degradation was predicted. In addition, the change in the compressor surge margin, which is an important indicator for safe engine operation, was evaluated.
