Previous theoretical equations for the shear capacity of steel beam to concrete filled steel tube (CFT) column connections vary in the assumptions for the shear deformation mechanisms and adopt different equations for calculating shear strength of each component (steel tube webs, steel tube flanges, diaphragms, and concrete etc.); thus result in different equations for calculating shear strength of the joint. Besides, shear force-deformation relations of the joint, needed for estimating building drift, are not well developed at the present. This paper compares previously proposed equations for joint shear capacity, discusses the shear deformation mechanism of the joint, and suggests recommendations for obtaining more accurate predictions. Finite element analyses of internal diaphragm connections to CFT columns were carried out in ABAQUS. ABAQUS results and theoretical estimations of the shear capacities were then used to calibrate rotational springs in joint elements in OpenSEES simulating the shear deformation behavior of the joint. The ABAQUS and OpenSEES results were validated with experimental results available. Results show that: (1) shear deformation of the steel tube dominates the deformation of the joint; while the thickness of the diaphragms has a negligible effect; (2) in OpenSEES simulation, the joint behavior is highly dependent on the yielding strength given to the rotational spring; and (3) axial force ratio has a significant effect on the joint deformation of the specimen analyzed. Finally, modified joint shear force-deformation relations are proposed based on previous theory.
Although a lot of experimental and analytical investigations have been carried out for steel bridge piers made of SS400 and SM490, the formulas available for SS400 and SM490 are not suitable for evaluating ultimate load and deformation capacities of steel bridge piers made of high strength steel (HSS) SM570. The effect of various parameters is investigated in this paper, including plate width-to-thickness ratio, column slenderness ratio and axial compression force ratio, on the ultimate load and deformation capacities of steel bridge box piers made of SM570 steel subjected to cyclic loading. The elasto-plastic behavior of the steel bridge piers under cyclic loads is simulated through plastic large deformation finite element analysis, in which a modified two-surface model (M2SM) including cyclic hardening is employed to trace the material nonlinearity. An extensive parametric study is conducted to study the influences of structural parameters on the ultimate load and deformation capacities. Based on these analytical investigations, new formulas for predicting ultimate load and deformation capacities of steel bridge piers made of SM570 are proposed. This study extends the ultimate load and deformation capacities evaluation of steel bridge piers from SS400, SM490 steels to SM570 steel, and provides some useful suggestions.
To estimate the structural seismic demand, some methods are based on an equivalent linear system such as the Capacity Spectrum Method, the N2 method and the Equivalent Linearization method. Another category, widely investigated, is based on displacement correction such as the Displacement Coefficient Method and the Coefficient Method. Its basic concept consists in converting the elastic linear displacement of an equivalent Single Degree of Freedom system (SDOF) into a corresponding inelastic displacement. It relies on adequate modifying or reduction coefficient such as the inelastic deformation ratio which is usually developed for systems with known ductility factors ($C_{\mu}$) and ($C_R$) for known yield-strength reduction factor. The present paper proposes a rational approach which estimates this inelastic deformation ratio for SDOF bilinear systems by rigorous nonlinear analysis. It proposes a new inelastic deformation ratio which unifies and combines both $C_{\mu}$ and $C_R$ effects. It is defined by the ratio between the inelastic and elastic maximum lateral displacement demands. Three options are investigated in order to express the inelastic response spectra in terms of: ductility demand, yield strength reduction factor, and inelastic deformation ratio which depends on the period, the post-to-preyield stiffness ratio, the yield strength and the peak ground acceleration. This new inelastic deformation ratio ($C_{\eta}$) is describes the response spectra and is related to the capacity curve (pushover curve): normalized yield strength coefficient (${\eta}$), post-to-preyield stiffness ratio (${\alpha}$), natural period (T), peak ductility factor (${\mu}$), and the yield strength reduction factor ($R_y$). For illustrative purposes, instantaneous ductility demand and yield strength reduction factor for a SDOF system subject to various recorded motions (El-Centro 1940 (N/S), Boumerdes: Algeria 2003). The method accuracy is investigated and compared to classical formulations, for various hysteretic models and values of the normalized yield strength coefficient (${\eta}$), post-to-preyield stiffness ratio (${\alpha}$), and natural period (T). Though the ductility demand and yield strength reduction factor differ greatly for some given T and ${\eta}$ ranges, they remain take close when ${\eta}>1$, whereas they are equal to 1 for periods $T{\geq}1s$.
The effect of reinforcing concrete members with high strength steel bars with yield strength up to 600 MPa on the overall seismic behavior of concrete moment frames was studied experimentally and numerically. Three geometrically identical plane frame models with two bays and two stories, where one frame model was reinforced with hot rolled bars (HRB) with a nominal yield strength of 335 MPa and the other two by high strength steel bars with a nominal yield strength of 600 MPa, were tested under simulated earthquake action considering different axial load ratios to investigate the hysteretic behavior, ductility, strength and stiffness degradation, energy dissipation and plastic deformation characteristics. Test results indicate that utilizing high strength reinforcement can improve the structural resilience, reduce residual deformation and achieve favorable distribution pattern of plastic hinges on beams and columns. The frame models reinforced with normal and high strength steel bars have comparable overall deformation capacity. Compared with the frame model subjected to a low axial load ratio, the ones under a higher axial load ratio exhibit more plump hysteretic loops. The proved reliable finite element analysis software DIANA was used for the numerical simulation of the tests. The analytical results agree well with the experimental results.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of the deformation temperature in high manganese austenitic stainless steel. ${\alpha}$'-martensite was formed with a specific direction by deformation. The volume fraction of the deformation induced martensite was increased by increasing the degree of deformation and decreasing the deformation temperature. With the increase in the deformation, the hardness and tensile strength were increased, while the elongation was rapidly decreased at the initial stage of the deformation, and then gradually decreased. The hardness and tensile strength were increased and the elongation was decreased with adecrease in the deformation temperature. The hardness and tensile strength were strongly controlled by the volume fraction of martensite, but the elongation was controlled by the transformation behavior of the deformation induced martensite.
This study deals with the characteristic of quenching refrigerant for heat treatment deformation control of SM45C steel. Heat-treatment deformation must be controlled for the progress of production parts for landing gear. Most of deformation is occurred on inconsistent cooling. The inconsistent cooling is caused by a property of quenching refrigerant. When a heated metal is deposited in the quenching refrigerant, the cooling speed is so slow in early period of cooling because of a steam-curtain. After additional cooling, the steam-curtain is destroyed. In this progress, the cooling speed is very fast. The object of this study is to control the deformation of heat-treatment for landing gear by improving the conditions of quenching. The cooling curves and cooling rates of water, oil and polymer solution are obtained and illustrated. From the characteristics of the quenching refrigerant, the effects of heat-treatments on thermal deformation and fatigue strength are also investigated.

In this paper, we have investigated deformation of cup for EFI detonator in high velocity impact test. The experimental result shows that STS cup deformed 0.170 mm with the bulged shape. The numerical simulation result with static/dynamic material properties of SUS304 shows 0.166 mm of deformation. The main parameters to decrease the deformation of cup are stength, thickness and density of cup. The initial condition of SUS304 cup was strength of 215 MPa and thickness of 0.12 mm. As strength increases to 500 MPa, deformation of cup converges to 0 mm, and as thickness increases to 0.18 mm, deformation of cup converges to 0 mm. If the density of cup decreases from 8 to 2.7 g/cc, the deformation of cup decreases to 0.141 mm.

Among the various parts of automobile, automotive seat is the most fundamental item that ride comfort can be evaluated as the direct contact part with human body. Automotive seat must have the sufficient rigidity and strength at the same time with ride comfort. In this study, cushion frame and back frame at car seat are modelled with 3D. There are structural simulation analyses about 3 kinds of tests on torsion strength, vertical load strength and back frame strength. In the analysis result, the initial total deformation and the permanent total deformation has the maximum values of 5.4821 mm and 0.02539mm respectively at the torsion strength test of cushion frame. Total deformations at front and rear end parts of cushion frame become the values of 2.1159mm and 0.0606mm respectively at the test of vertical load strength of cushion frame. In case of more than this load, the maximum value of total deformation also becomes 3.1739mm. The maximum value of total deformation becomes 0.18634mm at 3 kinds of the strength tests on back frame. By the study result of no excessive deformation and no fracture cushion frame and back frame at automotive seat, the sufficient rigidity and strength to guarantee the safety of passenger can be verified.

This paper presents an experimental work to study the flexural strength of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened by partially de-bonded near surface-mounted (NSM) fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) strip with various de-bonded length. Especially, considering high anchorage capacity at end of a FRP strip, the effect of de-bonded region at a central part was investigated. In order to check the improvement of strength or deformation capacity when the bonded surface area only increased without changing the FRP area, single and triple lines of FRP were planned. In addition, the flexural strength of the RC member strengthened by a partially de-bonded NSM FRP strip was evaluated by using the existing researchers' strength equation to predict the flexural strength after retrofit. From the study, it was found that where de-bonded region exists in the central part of a flexural member, the deformation capacity of the member is expected to be improved, because FRP strain is not to be concentrated on the center but to be extended uniformly in the de-bonded region. Where NSM FRP strips are distributed in triple lines, a relatively high strength can be exerted due to the increase of bond strength in the anchorage.
Formwork is a temporary structure that supports its weight and that of fresh concrete as well as construction live loads. Slab formwork consists of sheathing, stringer, hanger and shore. In construction site, pipe supports are usually used as shores which are consisted of the slab formwork. In this study, compressive strength of 80 pipe supports was measured by knife edge test and plate test. Buckling load of pipe supports was analyzed by structural analysis program(MlDAS). Theoretical buckling load with/without initial deformation was got by theoretical analysis. According to these results, buckling load which was analyzed by structural analysis program(MlDAS) was larger than compressive strength of knife edge test and plate test. Theoretical buckling load without initial deformation was larger than compressive strength of knife edge test and plate test. But Theoretical buckling load with initial deformation was lower than compressive strength of knife edge test and plate test. Initial deformation equation for test method according to the pipe support length was suggested. Therefore, the present study results will be used to design the slab formwork safely.
