Investigation into a Chemical Cracking and the Measurement of Stress in a Polycarbonate Specimen through Deformation Jig (변형지그를 이용한 폴리카보네이트 시편의 케미컬 크랙킹 및 응력측정에 관한 연구)

  • The causes of residual stress in an injection molded part are high temperature variation and shear stress during molding process. Chemical cracking test is one of the methods of measuring residual stress and cracks are developed according to the degree of residual stress. In this study, the relationship between chemical cracking and exerted stress have been investigated. Deformation jig was designed and used to give a stress through deformation in a specimen. Specimens were molded by a hot press using polycarbonate (PC) and annealed to remove residual stresses in the specimens. Specimens were fixed in the deformation jig and immersed into the solvent to create cracks in the specimens. Solvents were prepared by using tetrahydrofuran and methyl alcohol. As stress accordance with the deformation in the specimen increased, the frequency and density of cracks in the specimen also increased. The results of this study can be used for the measurement of residual stress quantitatively in an injection molded PC product using a chemical cracking method.

  • M152, used for aircraft engine compressor cases, causes many problems in the cutting process due to its high hardness and high toughness. Characterized by a concave cylindrical center, aircraft engine compressor cases are thin but have multiple side holes to connect with internal parts. Thus, deformation occurs despite the jig sustaining the inside. The object of this study was to lessen the deformation arising from drilling by improving the drilling jig for aircraft engine compressor cases. To this end, an aircraft engine compressor case modeled with SolidWorks was analyzed with ANSYS under real conditions. Then, to secure reliability, the analyzed deformation was compared with the actual deformation. Based on the results, the effects of the improved drilling jig for aircraft engine compressor cases were verified.

  • Plate-shaped works are one of the materials that can be applied to the entire industry due to their various shapes and sizes. Plate-shaped parts workpieces are thin and wide, and when processing is completed, they are often bent or deformed in various directions, making it difficult to produce normal products. In particular, this study intends to study the processing deformation and distortion of plate-shaped parts fastened to the jig during milling processing. In this study, a method for preventing deformation occurring in plate-shaped parts was derived through jig element change and CAE analysis, and this was applied to actual processing to produce products with stable dimensions. Through a finite element analysis experiment, it was found that installing two supports on the back of the plate-shaped part results in minimal deformation and the optimal distance between the two supports is 150 mm. Through this experiment, when processing a thin plate product, a support was installed in a direction opposite to the cutting force applied to the thin plate to prevent deformation of the product, thereby improving defects.

  • This study determines the selection of an appropriate jig material for the blade edge of the medical sapphire knife. The physical properties of the jig material affects the edge shape and chipping phenomenon in machining of the medical sapphire knife. If a grinding wheel is used, brittle workpieces such as sapphire are easily damaged by the propagation of cracks because the grinding force significantly increases. It is important to constantly maintain the grinding force in the grinding process of the brittle materials. The grinding force can be kept constantly by inducing the elastic deformation of the Jig material because the elastic deformation of brittle work-piece is negligibly low. The chipping phenomenon may be reduced by selecting the proper Jig material. Aluminum, copper, stainless steels and carbon steel were used as Jig materials. The experiment was conducted using a cast iron grinding wheel, which was installed on a conventional grinding machine with the ELID grinding system. The thickness and width of the chipping area were measured using an optical microscope and FE-SEM to analyze the shape of the blade edge. According to the experiment result, the chipping phenomenon decreased, and the sharp edge was formed when the jig materials with low elastic modulus were used.

On the Weld-Induced Deformation Analysis of Curved Plates (곡판의 맞대기 용접변형 거동에 관한 연구)

  • A three-dimensional finite element (FEM) model has been developed to simulate the deformation due to bead on plate welding of curved plates with curvature in the weld direction. By using traditional method such as thermal-elastic-plastic FEM, the weld-induced deformation can be predicted accurately. However, this method is not practical approach to analyze the deformation of large and complex structures such as ship hull structures in view of time and cost. This study is classified from the aspect of equivalent load based on inherent strain near the weld line. Therefore, the residual deformation can be simply computed by elastic analysis. Further more, a practical solution is proposed to consider the contact between the plate and the positioning jig by judging the reaction forces of the jig at calculation step and the effect of the longitudinal curvature is closely considered.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences of displacement pattern depending on type of sliding jig and application method during maxillary molar distalization with temporary anchorage devices (TADs). Materials and Methods: Maxilla with normal tooth size and arch shape was selected to create a 3-dimensional finite element model, which included the bracket, orthodontic main archwire, removable sliding jig (R-jig). The orthodontic mini-implant anchorage was set 8 mm superiorly from main archwire, buccally between the second premolar and first molar. The base experimental design was Condition 1, which was composed $0.019{\times}0.025$ inch stainless steel (SS) of wire size of R-jig, 200 gm force, un-tied state. And the other designs varied to wire size of R-jig, magnitude of force. The results are as follows. Results: As the wire size of R-jig was increased, the deformation of R-jig was decreased. However, the displacement of second molar wasn't different each other. As the force to second molar was increased, the more displacement of second molar was observed, and the more distal tipping movement, vetical displacement was observed. Conclusion: R-jig can get distal teeth movement in orthodontic treatment without side effects.

Development of the optimal Jig & fixture applied to ultra-precision saddle machining (복합가공기용 초정밀급 새들 가공을 위한 최적의 고정구 개발)

  • The increasing level of demand for multi-tasking machines requires a saddle with an ultra-precise machining accuracy level of $15{\mu}m$, as such a saddle is one of the main components of these machines. The manner of achieving ultra-precise machining accuracy mainly depends on the fixed forces. In this paper, we optimized the number of contact points and the contact positions to reduce the deformation of the saddle while it is machined. The performance levels of the proposed optimal jig and fixture are determined by measuring the flatness, parallelism and perpendicularity of a machined saddle. The machining accuracy is found to be lower than $15{\mu}m$ at all measured points.

  • According to the high accuracy of semiconductor equipments, PCB substrate with much thin thickness is required. However, it is very difficult to sustain the PCB substrate without deformation in case of horizontal installation, due to low bending stiffness. In this research, new PCB process equipment with vertical installation has been developed in order to solve the problem of PCB substrate damage during etching process. As the main parts of etching system on PCB substrate, PCB substrate and JIG are analyzed through finite element method and experimental test. Through the analysis results of stress state, we could find the optimal JIG design to make the damage as low as possible.

  • Fiber composite materials are widely used in aerospace industries due to their high specific strength and stiffness. Especially, the increasing use of polymer composite materials for injection of automobile components has led to a considerable interest in the application of stress pattern analysis by thermal emission to these composite materials. Therefore, in this study the microstructure of glass fiber orientation at the parent and weld line of polycarbonate is observed by a light transmission. And we also investigate a stress concentration model of a notch including short glass fibers. Especially the polymer injection weld reorients the fiber to suggest a new method for the evaluation of inhomogeneous deformation.

  • To achieve high productivity of assembly hull blocks, it is important to predict welding deformations accurately and to apply these data to the production planning. In the deformation analysis of hull block, simplified methods (elastic analysis) such as inherent method, equivalent loading method and local & global approach are usually used instead of thermal-elastic-plastic analysis because of calculating time and cost. To be much more practical, these simplified methods should consider gravity effect of plate and contact condition between the plate and the positioning jig. In this research, using finite element method, practical predicting method for the welding deformation of the curved hull blocks with considering welding sequence, gravity effect and contact condition is proposed.
