A series of experimental work is carried out with the aim to understand the flexural performance of laminated glass (LG) beams using polyvinyl butyral (PVB) and Ionoplast interlayers subjected to short term duration loads in the circumstance of elevated temperature. The study is based on a total of 42 laboratory tests conducted in ambient temperature ranging from $25^{\circ}C$ to $80^{\circ}C$. The load duration is kept within 20 seconds. Through the tests, load-stress and load-deflection curves of the LG are established; appropriate analytical models for the LG are indentified; the effective thicknesses as well as the shear transfer coefficients of the LG are semi-empirically determined. The test results show that within the studied temperature range the bending stresses and deflections at mid-span of the LG develop linearly with respect to the applied loads. From $25^{\circ}C$ to $80^{\circ}C$ the flexural behavior of the PVB LG is found constantly between that of monolithic glass and layered glass having the same nominal thickness; the flexural behavior of the Ionoplast LG is equivalent to monolithic glass of the same nominal thickness until the temperature elevates up to $50^{\circ}C$. The test results reveal that in calculating the effective thicknesses of the PVB and Ionoplast LG, neglecting the shear capacities of the interlayers is uneconomic even when the ambient temperature is as high as $80^{\circ}C$. In the particular case of this study, the shear transfer coefficient of the PVB interlayer is found in a range from 0.62 to 0.14 while that of the Ionoplast interlayer is found in a range from 1.00 to 0.56 when the ambient temperature varies from $25^{\circ}C$ to $80^{\circ}C$.

In strength limit states design, it is assumed that after cracking, reinforcement carries all tension in the tension zone of reinforced concrete members. However, it can be seen the concrete between cracks will contribute to carrying a part of the tension stress in actual concrete members particularly at service load levels, this effect is referred as tension stiffening effect. In this study, tension stiffening models and high strength concrete beam flexural test results were verified through comparison. The relationship between moment-curvature and load-deflection was evaluated by result of tension stiffening model and test result values. The analysis results showed that ACI 318 and Owen & Damjanic generally shows good agreement.
It is difficult to obtain accurate fracture toughness values using three point bending test(TPB) proposed by RILEM committees because the shape of load-deflection curve is irregular and final crack propagation occurs after some slow stable cracking. However, fracture toughness is easily obtained from crack initiation load in the disk test. In this paper, the fracture properties of high strength concrete disks with center-crack was investigated. For this purpose, the experimental results were compared with the results by finite element analysis(FEA). And the experimental fracture locus was compared with theoretical fracture locus. Also, the results of fracture properties for the degree of concrete strength are presented. It is concluded from this study that results from FEA with maximum stress theory were compared well with the results from experiment. And the degree of concrete strength was contributed to the crack initiation load and fracture toughness, but was not contributed to the failure angle. Also, The discrepancy of fracture locus between the maximum stress theory and the experiment for concrete is considered to depend upon a large energy requirement for inducing the mixed-mode and sliding mode fractures.
This is an experimental study on the structural characteristics of reinforced concrete beams using of the oyster shells as a substitute fine aggregate of concrete. In this study, the main factors consist of the grain sizes and the percentage of substitution of oyster shells to fine aggregate in the equal water cement ratio. The results of the study showed as followed. The initial load value of them represented similar constant within 10% of the maximum load value in each test beam. But the maximum load value and the ultimate load value decreased with increased grain size and the rate of substitution. As the grain size of oyster shells became smaller, the load values of them were somewhat higher. The deflection among deformation properties of reinforced concrete beams with oyster shells represented typical curves like that of normal reinforced concrete. In the deformation of steel and concrete, the deformation was proportionated to the load till yield point and from yield point until approaching the ultimate load point. One type was typical curve of the load and the deformation and the other type irregularly was changed to very small deformation for the load increase centering around load axis. After the analyzing structural behaviors and the properties of reinforced concrete test beams with oyster shells, the most excellent grain size of oyster shells represented 1.0mm and less or 5.0mm and less with taking uniformly, and the percentage of practicable substitution of them to fine aggregate was about 30%.
Toughening mechanisms and mechanical properties of three different polyolefin-based composite systems we studied using the tensile, Izod impact and double-notch lout-point-bending (DN-4PB) test, which is well known be an effective tool for probing the failure mechanism (s) around the subcritically propagated crack tip. Microscopy observations such as optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were carried out lot the test samples. A detailed investigation clearly shows that a variety of toughening mechanisms, i.e., shear yielding, craze, particle-matrix debonding, rubber particle cavitation, crack deflection and bifurcation, are observed around crack tip damage zone. These toughening mechanisms are responsible for the observed, improved fracture toughness. Based on this study, DN-4PB technique is sufficient to obtain the information needed to describe the fracture behavior of polyolefin-based composites as well as their corresponding toughening mechanisms.
The first part of this study found the tendencies of the mechanical properties of two arctic structural steels (EH32 and FH32). In the second part, the crashworthiness of stiffened panels scaled down from the side frame structure of a Korean research icebreaker was determined. A procedure for designing the shapes and sizes of the stiffened panels, mass and shape of a drop striker, and a large temperature chamber, and then manufacturing these, is introduced in detail. From impact bending tests for the stiffened panels, the residual permanent deformations and deformation histories over time were captured using manual measurement and video image analyses. Numerical simulations of the impact bending tests were carried out for three different finite element models, which were mainly composed of shell elements, solid elements, and solid elements, with welding beads. It was proven from a comparison of the test results and numerical simulation results that the solid element model with the welding bead consideration approached the test results in terms of the residual deformations as long as the strain rate effect was taken into account.
In R&D of artillery system, error budget method is used to predict artillery firing error without field firing test. The error budget method for artillery has been consistently developed but apply for practical R&D of the weapon system has been avoided because of lacks of error budget source information. The error budget source is composed of every detailed error components which affect total distance and deflection error of artillery, and most of them are difficult to be calculated or measured. Also with the inaccuracy of source information, simulated error result dose not reflect real firing error. To resolve that problem, an optimization algorithm is adopted to figure out error budget sources from existing filed firing test. The method of finding input parameter estimation which is commonly used in aerodynamics was applied. As an optimization algorithm, CMA-ES is used and presented in the paper. The error budget sources which are figured out by the presented method can be applied to compute ROC of new weapon systems and may contribute to an improvement of accuracy in artillery.

The connector is the most important part of a composite beam and promotes a composite action between a steel beam and concrete slab. This paper presents the experiment results for three large-scale beams with a newly puzzle shape of crestbond. The behavior of this connector in a composite beam was investigated, and the results were correlated with those obtained from push-out-test specimens. Four-point-bending load testing was carried out on steel-concrete composite beam models to consider the effects of the concrete strength, number of transverse rebars in the crestbond, and width of the concrete slab. Then, the deflection, ultimate load, and strains of the concrete, steel beam, and crestbond; the relative slip between the steel beam and the concrete slab at the end of the beams; and the failure mechanism were observed. The results showed that the general behavior of a steel-concrete composite beam using the newly puzzle shape of crestbond shear connectors was similar to that of a steel-concrete composite beam using conventional shear connectors. These newly puzzle shape of crestbond shear connectors can be used as shear connectors, and should be considered for application in composite bridges, which have a large number of steel beams.
This research examines the eccentric compression performance of composite columns composed of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC)-filled square steel tube and profile steel. A total of 17 specimens on the composite columns with different recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) replacement percentage, RAC strength, width to thickness ratio of square steel tube, profile steel ratio, eccentricity and slenderness ratio were subjected to eccentric compression tests. The failure process and characteristic of specimens under eccentric compression loading were observed in detail. The load-lateral deflection curves, load-train curves and strain distribution on the cross section of the composite columns were also obtained and described on the basis of test data. Results corroborate that the failure characteristics and modes of the specimens with different design parameters were basically similar under eccentric compression loads. The compression side of square steel tube yields first, followed by the compression side of profile steel. Finally, the RAC in the columns was crushed and the apparent local bulging of square steel tube was also observed, which meant that the composite column was damaged and failed. The composite columns under eccentric compression loading suffered from typical bending failure. Moreover, the eccentric bearing capacity and deformation of the specimens decreased as the RCA replacement percentage and width to thickness ratio of square steel tube increased, respectively. Slenderness ratio and eccentricity had a significantly adverse effect on the eccentric compression performance of composite columns. But overall, the composite columns generally had high-bearing capacity and good deformation. Meanwhile, the mechanism of the composite columns under eccentric compression loads was also analysed in detail, and the calculation formulas on the eccentric compression capacity of composite columns were proposed via the limit equilibrium analysis method. The calculation results of the eccentric compression capacity of columns are consistent with the test results, which verify the validity of the formulas, and the conclusions can serve as references for the engineering application of this kind of composite columns.

This study introduces soil resistance multipliers at locations encompassed by the zone of influence of the helix plate to consider the added lateral resistance provided to the helical pile. The zone of influence of a helix plate is a function of its diameter and serves as a boundary condition for the modified soil resistance springs. The concept is based on implementing p-multipliers as a reduction factor for piles in group action. The application of modified p-y springs in the analysis of helical piles allows for better characterization and understanding of the lateral behavior of helical piles, which will help further the development of design methods. To execute the proposed method, a finite difference program, HPCap (Helical Pile Capacity), was developed by the authors using Matlab. The program computes the deflection, shear force, bending moment, and soil resistance of the helical pile and allows the user to freely input the value of the zone of influence and Ω (a coefficient that affects the value of the p-multiplier). Results from ten full-scale lateral load tests on helical piles embedded at depths of 3.0 m with varying shaft diameters, shaft thicknesses, and helix configurations were analyzed to determine the zone of influence and the magnitude of the p-multipliers. The analysis determined that the value of the p-multipliers is influenced by the ratio between the pile embedment length and the shaft diameter (Dp), the effective helix diameter (Dh-Dp), and the zone of influence. Furthermore, the zone of influence is recommended to be 1.75 times the helix diameter (Dh). Using the numerical analysis method presented in this study, the predicted deflections of the various helical pile cases showed good agreement with the observed field test results.
