To study the efficient usage of small diameter logs and woods containing defects such as knots, slope of the grain and decay, six types of finger-jointed woods with various finger profiles were made of poplar, pine and oak with different density. We investigated the effect of finger profile on static bending strength performances of finger-jointed woods. The efficiency of bending MOE, MOR and deflection showed the highest value in poplar finger-jointed wood with the lowest density of three species, and the lowest value in oak finger-jointed wood with the highest density of three species. The values markedly decreased with increasing finger pitch for finger-jointed wood glued with polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) resin for all tested species, whereas for the finger-jointed wood glued with resorcinol-phenol formaldehyde (RPF) resin, the influence of finger pitch on the efficiency of MOE was not found in all tested species, and those on the efficiency of MOR and deflection indicated the same trend as finger-jointed wood glued with PVAc resin in the case of pine and oak finger-jointed wood with higher densities. It was found that the values tended to decrease with increasing density of species on the whole and the desirable finger pitches were L (6.8 mm) for poplar, M (4.4 mm) for pine and S (3.5 mm) for oak in a view of economy. For finger-jointed wood glued with PVAc resin, the fitness between a tip and a root width of a pair of fingers δ of 0.5 mm indicated the highest efficiency of MOE for all species. And, the influence of δ on MOR was only found in oak finger-jointed wood glued with RPF resin and the desirable δ value for oak was 0.1 mm. However, it was found that the influence of δ on the strength performance was very small.
The mechanical and physical properties of wood are strongly dependent upon the slope of grain. Specially, tensile strength is more severely affected by the slope of grain. Therefore, tension tests were performed on small thin wood samples made from Pinus radiata with varying the slope of grain. Determining the tensile strength for clear thin wood samples the other variabilities associated with material, size, drying, defects, etc were discarded. Slope of grain was measured by the slope of grain indicator and actual slope of grain was also determined by a protractor. Correlation coefficients between machine measured and actual slope of grain for 40 pieces of 2×20 mm, 300 mm long Pinus radiata were 0.84 for wide face measurement. Results also showed that tensile strength and MOE from stress wave tests decreased with increasing the slope of grain. This study did not establish a relationships for tensile strength and MOE from stress wave with slope of grain. However, the trends of MOEs from stress wave test with both slope of grain are agreed well with Hankinson's equation. Predicted tension strength curve by Hankinson's equation was also agreed well with the experimental data over the range from 0 to 13 degrees for slope of grain.
A previous study verified that the SIRT (simultaneous iterative reconstruction technique) method is more efficient than the back-projection method as a CT algorithm for wood. However, it was expected that the determination of the initial model function of the SIRT method would influence the quality of CT image. Therefore, in this study, we intended to develop a technique that could be used to determine an adequate initial model function. For this purpose, we proposed several techniques, and for each technique we examined the effects of the initial model function on the average errors and the CT image at each iteration. Through this study, it was shown that the average error was decreased and the image quality was improved using the proposed techniques. This tendency was most pronounced when the back-projection method was used to determine the initial model function. From the results of this study, we drew the following conclusions: 1) The initial model function of the SIRT method should be determined with careful attention, and 2) the back-projection method efficiently determines the initial model function of the SIRT method.
This study investigated the effect of test zone selection for evaluating bending strength of visually graded lumber. This will contribute to the understanding of two different methods under different standards. In method I, the major defect was randomly placed in the test specimen. In method II, the major defect was randomly placed in the maximum moment zone (MMZ). The results showed that the method II is more accurate for reflecting the effect of defects governing the grade of lumber. Unless the maximum strength-reducing defect (MSRD) is placed in MMZ, the evaluated value would be higher than that of MSRD. For evaluating the modulus of rupture (MOR) of visually graded lumber in test set-up of Method I, the Eq. (5) needs to be considered.
Experimental external collector type solar lumber dryer of $1m^3$ of maximum capacity with $1.6m^3$ of collector area was designed and constructed. The seasonal performance of solar dryer, including air-conditions, energy efficiency, and drying characteristics of 3cm-thick red pine and douglas-fir lumber was investigated. Also, the economic analysis was carried out. Annual average solar drying rate was about 2 times faster than air-drying rate with no significant difference in the amount of drying defects. But in initial drying stage air-drying rate in winter was much faster and those in spring and autumn were slightly slower than solar drying rate in each season. Annual average energy efficiency of solar-dryer and-collector was 25% and 57%, respectively. Fuel savings were over 50% at 15% of energy inflation rate and the payback period was estimated as 6.10 years at 30% of energy inflation rate.
This study was performed as part of a research project aimed at developing an ultrasonic computed tomography (CT) system of wood for field application. In this reports, we investigate the variation of wave velocities on the cross section of real size wooden structural member to confirm the reason of image distortion on CT image of wood, and then proposed a new image reconstruction method by considering the velocity variation on wood cross section. First of all, the effect of wood anisotropy on ultrasonic velocities of wooden members was investigated. Based on the relationship between ultrasonic velocity and annual ring angle, which was obtained from test results of small clear specimens, ultrasonic velocities of each measuring angle were predicted. Next, they were compared with the ultrasonic velocities measured on five wood disks. There were very large differences between predicted and measured results, thought to be caused by the skewing effect of ultrasound and the presence of juvenile-wood. Based on these findings, a new method was proposed to reconstruct cross-sectional image of wood. By using this method, some distortions on reconstructed images could be removed, and defects were more easily and clearly detected. The minimum size of detectable defect was decreased remarkably, from 33 mm to 13 mm. However, the size of the detected defect was enlarged and the position somewhat shifted to the specimen surface on the CT images, which was also thought to be caused by the skewing effect of ultrasound. Additional research has been planned to solve these problems.
This study was investigated with the surface properties such as physical and accelerated tests of wood-based floorings. In physical test, hardness and abrasion resistance values of laminate floorings were higher than those of others. The center line average surface roughness($R_a$) of imported laminate flooring was highest value($1.34{\mu}m$) and that of imported solid wood flooring was lowest value($0.62{\mu}m$). In cold resistance and moist heat resistance, no defects were found on the surface of all flooring (crack, blistering, peeling, and gloss loss etc.) after testing. Wet-cold-dry cycle test showed that plywood flooring appeared some cracks. In accelerated weathering test, color difference increased with increasing Xenon arc light irradiation
The phase separation in Wood Flour-Polymer Composite (WPC) was investigated and the reasons for change in mechanical properties with the content of wood flour were explored. The wood flour-polypropylene composite samples with different wood flour contents were prepared. From differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermograms of WPC samples, the trend of crystallinity and melting temperature ($T_m$) were analyzed. The crystallinity and melting temperature increased and then decreased as the content of wood flour increased. From these results, it was confirmed that at the low wood flour content the wood flours were dispersed into the polypropylene matrix but at the high wood flour content, the phase separation between polymer and wood flour phases appeared. The tensile strength of WPC samples was continuously decreased with the increase of wood flour content. At a low wood flour content, the low interfacial bonding and the decrease in crystallinity were the main reasons for the decrease in tensile strength with the increase of wood flour content. At a high wood flour content, the decrease in tensile strength resulted from the interfacial defects between the polymer and wood flour phases. The impact strength of the WPC sample showed the maximum behavior with the content of wood flour. At a low wood flour content, the impact strength was enhanced owing to the decrease in brittleness, which results from the decrease in crystallinity. At a high wood flour content, however, the impact strength decreased due to phase separation.
This Study was carried out to investigate the course of air-drying and drying defects of red pine (Pinus densiflora S. et Z.) and Italian poplar (Populus eurameriana I-476) boards 1,2 and 3cm thick in the flat pile. The results are as follows. 1. Air-drying curves for red pine and Italian poplar boards were same as figure 1 and 2. These moisture contents were lower in July and August during seasoning periods. 2. Air drying time of red pine board required to dry 15 percent moisture content in one week for 1 cm board, five weeks for 2 cm board and six weeks for 3cm board respectively. In case of Italian poplar boards, in one week for 1 cm board, four weeks for 2 cm and five weeks for 3 cm board. The thickness of board influenced the time for air drying. 3. Drying defects such as checking, warping and staining happened badly in pine than in Italian poplar boards. Especially, checking was severe in thicker board and warping in thinner board.
This study was executed to test the possibility of replacement for domestic Japanese larch(Larix leptolepis) for hardwoods and to acquire the information about the effects of drying temperature on internal temperature, moisture content and drying defects. In high-temperature drying, internal temperature increased rapidly to boiling point, immediately after that point the internal temperature rising rate was reduced. In the case of drying at temperature of $125^{\circ}C$, internal temperature could reach at boiling point in a very short time. Moisture content in high-temperature drying showed constant drying rate period and first period of falling rate drying together in 4 hours since experiment begun. There was no strong correlation between initial moisture content and final moisture content. Average drying rate at $115^{\circ}C$, $120^{\circ}C$ and $125^{\circ}C$ was 1.42%/hr, 1.88%/hr and 2.02%/hr, respectively; the case of drying temperature of $125^{\circ}C$ showed most rapid drying rate. Drying rate of $125^{\circ}C$ was so rapid that it showed more severe shrinkage, bow, collapse, end check, and internal check development than in other drying conditions. The result of this study showed the strong possibility of high-temperature drying for Japanese larch, and to dry Japanese larch optimally, dry bulb temperature should not exceed $120^{\circ}C$.
