  • When confronted with a query, question answering systems endeavor to extract the most exact answers possible by determining the answer type that fits with the key terms used in the query. However, the efficacy of such systems is limited by the fact that the terms used in a query may be in a syntactic form different to that of the same words in a document. In this paper, we present an efficient semantic query expansion methodology based on a question category concept list comprised of terms that are semantically close to terms used in a query. The semantically close terms of a term in a query may be hypernyms, synonyms, or terms in a different syntactic category. The proposed system constructs a concept list for each question type and then builds the concept list for each question category using a learning algorithm. In the question answering experiments on 42,654 Wall Street Journal documents of the TREC collection, the traditional system showed in 0.223 in MRR and the proposed system showed 0.50 superior to the traditional question answering system. The results of the present experiments suggest the promise of the proposed method.

  • The stock index is used not only as an economic indicator for a country, but also as an indicator for investment judgment, which is why research into predicting the stock index is ongoing. The task of predicting the stock price index involves technical, basic, and psychological factors, and it is also necessary to consider complex factors for prediction accuracy. Therefore, it is necessary to study the model for predicting the stock price index by selecting and reflecting technical and auxiliary factors that affect the fluctuation of the stock price according to the stock price. Most of the existing studies related to this are forecasting studies that use news information or macroeconomic indicators that create market fluctuations, or reflect only a few combinations of indicators. In this paper, this we propose to present an effective combination of the news information sentiment analysis and various macroeconomic indicators in order to predict the US Dow Jones Index. After Crawling more than 93,000 business news from the New York Times for two years, the sentiment results analyzed using the latest natural language processing techniques BERT and NLTK, along with five macroeconomic indicators, gold prices, oil prices, and five foreign exchange rates affecting the US economy Combination was applied to the prediction algorithm LSTM, which is known to be the most suitable for combining numeric and text information. As a result of experimenting with various combinations, the combination of DJI, NLTK, BERT, OIL, GOLD, and EURUSD in the DJI index prediction yielded the smallest MSE value.

  • This study aimed to early detect damaged trees by pine wilt disease using the vegetation indices of UAV images. The location data of 193 pine wilt disease trees were constructed through field surveys and vegetation index analyses of NDVI, GNDVI, NDRE and SAVI were performed using multi-spectral UAV images at the same time. K-Means algorithm was adopted to classify damaged trees and confusion matrix was used to compare and analyze the classification accuracy. The results of the study are summarized as follows. First, the overall accuracy of the classification was analyzed in order of NDVI (88.04%, Kappa coefficient 0.76) > GNDVI (86.01%, Kappa coefficient 0.72) > NDRE (77.35%, Kappa coefficient 0.55) > SAVI (76.84%, Kappa coefficient 0.54) and showed the highest accuracy of NDVI. Second, K-Means unsupervised classification method using NDVI or GNDVI is possible to some extent to find out the damaged trees. In particular, this technique is to help early detection of damaged trees due to its intensive operation, low user intervention and relatively simple analysis process. In the future, it is expected that the utilization of time series images or the application of deep learning techniques will increase the accuracy of classification.

  • Most object detection algorithms are studied based on RGB images. Because the RGB cameras are capturing images based on light, however, the object detection performance is poor when the light condition is not good, e.g., at night or foggy days. On the other hand, high-quality infrared(IR) images regardless of weather condition and light can be acquired because IR images are captured by an IR sensor that makes images with heat information. In this paper, we performed the object detection algorithm based on the compression ratio in RGB and IR images to show the detection capabilities. We selected RGB and IR images that were taken at night from the Free FLIR Thermal dataset for the ADAS(Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) research. We used the pre-trained object detection network for RGB images and a fine-tuned network that is tuned based on night RGB and IR images. Experimental results show that higher object detection performance can be acquired using IR images than using RGB images in both networks.

  • With the recent 4th Industrial Revolution, the growth and value of big data are continuously increasing, and the government is also actively making efforts to open and utilize public data. However, the situation still does not reach the level of demand for public data use by citizens, At this point, it is necessary to identify research trends in the public data field and seek directions for development. In this study, in order to understand the research trends related to public data, the analysis was performed using topic modeling, which is mainly used in text mining techniques. To this end, we collected papers containing keywords of 'Public data' among domestic and foreign research papers (1,437 domestically, 9,607 overseas) and performed topic modeling based on the LDA algorithm, and compared domestic and foreign public data research trends. After analysis, policy implications were presented. Looking at the time series by topic, research in the fields of 'personal information protection', 'public data management', and 'urban environment' has increased in Korea. Overseas, it was confirmed that research in the fields of 'urban policy', 'cell biology', 'deep learning', and 'cloud·security' is active.

  • Continuous wave (CW) radar has the advantage of reliability and accuracy compared to other sensors such as camera and lidar. In addition, binarized neural network (BNN) has a characteristic that dramatically reduces memory usage and complexity compared to other deep learning networks. Therefore, this paper proposes binarized neural network based human identification and motion classification system using CW radar. After receiving a signal from CW radar, a spectrogram is generated through a short-time Fourier transform (STFT). Based on this spectrogram, we propose an algorithm that detects whether a person approaches a radar. Also, we designed an optimized BNN model that can support the accuracy of 90.0% for human identification and 98.3% for motion classification. In order to accelerate BNN operation, we designed BNN hardware accelerator on field programmable gate array (FPGA). The accelerator was implemented with 1,030 logics, 836 registers, and 334.904 Kbit block memory, and it was confirmed that the real-time operation was possible with a total calculation time of 6 ms from inference to transferring result.

  • Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is considered to be suitable for near real-time inundation monitoring. The distinctly different intensity between water and land makes it adequate for waterbody detection, but the intrinsic speckle noise and variable intensity of SAR images decrease the accuracy of waterbody detection. In this study, we suggest two modules, named 'morphology module' and 'edge-enhanced module', which are the combinations of pooling layers and convolutional layers, improving the accuracy of waterbody detection. The morphology module is composed of min-pooling layers and max-pooling layers, which shows the effect of morphological transformation. The edge-enhanced module is composed of convolution layers, which has the fixed weights of the traditional edge detection algorithm. After comparing the accuracy of various versions of each module for U-Net, we found that the optimal combination is the case that the morphology module of min-pooling and successive layers of min-pooling and max-pooling, and the edge-enhanced module of Scharr filter were the inputs of conv9. This morphologic and edge-enhanced U-Net improved the F1-score by 9.81% than the original U-Net. Qualitative inspection showed that our model has capability of detecting small-sized waterbody and detailed edge of water, which are the distinct advancement of the model presented in this research, compared to the original U-Net.

  • This paper proposes a method to calibrate a thermal camera with three different perspectives. In particular, the intrinsic parameters of the camera and re-projection errors were provided to quantify the accuracy of the calibration result. Three lenses of the camera capture the same image, but they are not overlapped, and the image resolution is worse than the one captured by the RGB camera. In computer vision, camera calibration is one of the most important and fundamental tasks to calculate the distance between camera (s) and a target object or the three-dimensional (3D) coordinates of a point in a 3D object. Once calibration is complete, the intrinsic and the extrinsic parameters of the camera(s) are provided. The intrinsic parameters are composed of the focal length, skewness factor, and principal points, and the extrinsic parameters are composed of the relative rotation and translation of the camera(s). This study estimated the intrinsic parameters of thermal cameras that have three lenses of different perspectives. In particular, image enhancement based on a deep learning algorithm was carried out to improve the quality of the calibration results. Experimental results are provided to substantiate the proposed method.

  • As the frequency of localized heavy rainfall has increased during recent years, the importance of high-resolution radar data has also increased. This study aims to correct the bias of Dual Polarization radar that still has a spatial and temporal bias. In many studies, various statistical techniques have been attempted to correct the bias of radar rainfall. In this study, the bias correction of the S-band Dual Polarization radar used in flood forecasting of ME was implemented by a Convolutional Autoencoder (CAE) algorithm, which is a type of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The CAE model was trained based on radar data sets that have a 10-min temporal resolution for the July 2017 flood event in Cheongju. The results showed that the newly developed CAE model provided improved simulation results in time and space by reducing the bias of raw radar rainfall. Therefore, the CAE model, which learns the spatial relationship between each adjacent grid, can be used for real-time updates of grid-based climate data generated by radar and satellites.

  • BIM models allow building spaces to be instantiated and recognized as unique objects independently of model elements. These instantiated spaces provide the required semantics that can be leveraged for building code checking, energy analysis, and evacuation route analysis. However, theses spaces or rooms need to be designated manually, which in practice, lead to errors and omissions. Thus, most BIM models today does not guarantee the semantic integrity of space designations, limiting their potential applicability. Recent studies have explored ways to automate space allocation in BIM models using artificial intelligence algorithms, but they are limited in their scope and relatively low classification accuracy. This study explored the use of Graph Convolutional Networks, an algorithm exclusively tailored for graph data structures. The goal was to utilize not only geometry information but also the semantic relational data between spaces and elements in the BIM model. Results of the study confirmed that the accuracy was improved by about 8% compared to algorithms that only used geometric distinctions of the individual spaces.
