  • Deep learning is a promising solution to a number of complex problems based on its inherent capability to approximate almost all types of functions without the demand for handcrafted feature extraction. New wireless transmission and access schemes based on deep learning are being increasingly proposed as substitutes for existing approaches, providing a lower complexity and better performance gain. Among such schemes, a communications system is viewed as an end-to-end autoencoder. The learning process applied in autoencoders can automatically deal with some nonlinear or unknown properties in communications systems. Deep learning can also be used to optimize each processing block for required tasks such as channel decoding, signal detection, and multiple access. On top of recent related research trends, we suggest appropriate research approaches for communications systems to adopt deep learning.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to recognize the moving direction in the indoor environment by using the sensing system equipped with passive infrared (PIR) sensors and a deep learning algorithm. A PIR sensor generates a signal that can be distinguished according to the direction of movement of the user. A sensing system with four PIR sensors deployed by $45^{\circ}$ increments is developed and installed in the ceiling of the room. The PIR sensor signals from 6 users with 10-time experiments for 8 directions were collected. We extracted the raw data sets and performed experiments varying the number of sensors fed into the deep learning algorithm. The proposed sensing system using deep learning algorithm can recognize the users' moving direction by 99.2 %. In addition, with only one PIR senor, the recognition accuracy reaches 98.4%.

  • In this paper, we propose an automatic detection scheme of work distraction for remote management of telecommuting. The proposed scheme periodically captures two consequent computer screens and generates the difference image of these two captured images. The scheme applies the difference image to our deep learning model and makes a decision of abnormal patterns in the difference image. Our deep learning model is designed with the transfer learning technique of VGG16 deep learning. When the scheme detects an abnormal pattern in the difference image, it hides all texts in the difference images to protect disclosure of privacy-related information. Evaluation shows that the proposed scheme provides about 96% detection accuracy.

  • In recent years, the application of deep learning method to computer vision has shown to achieve great performances. Thus, many research projects have also applied deep learning technology to railroad defect detection. In this paper, we have reviewed the researches that applied computer vision based deep learning method to railroad defect detection and inspection, and have discussed the current trend and the direction of those researches. Many research projects were targeted to operate automatically without visual inspection of human and to work in real-time. Therefore, methods to speed up the computation were also investigated. The reduction of the number of learning parameters was considered important to improve computation efficiency. In addition to computation speed issue, the problem of annotation was also discussed in some research projects. To alleviate the problem of time consuming annotation, some kinds of automatic segmentation of the railroad defect or self-supervised methods have been suggested.

  • Recently, with the development of industry and the improvement of living standards, various wastes are generated along with the production of various products. Most of these wastes are used as containers for products, and plastic or aluminum is used. Various attempts are being made to automate the classification of these wastes due to the high labor cost, but most of them are solved by manpower due to the geometrical shape change due to the nature of the waste. In this study, in order to automate the waste sorting task, Deep Learning technology is applied to a robot system for waste sorting and a vision system for waste sorting to effectively perform sorting tasks according to the shape of waste. As a result of the experiment, a Deep Learning parameter suitable for waste sorting was selected. In addition, through various experiments, it was confirmed that 99% of wastes could be selected in individual & group image learning. It is expected that this will enable automation of the waste sorting operation.

  • The process of deep learning usually needs to deal with massive data which has greatly limited the development of deep learning technologies today. Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) structure is often used to solve image classification problems. However, a large number of images may be required in order to train an image in CNN, which is a heavy burden for existing computer systems to handle. If the image data can be compressed under the premise that the computer hardware system remains unchanged, it is possible to train more datasets in deep learning. However, image compression usually adopts the form of lossy compression, which will lose part of the image information. If the lost information is key information, it may affect learning performance. In this paper, we will analyze the effect of image compression on deep learning performance on CNN-based cat and dog classification. Through the experiment results, we conclude that the compression of images does not have a significant impact on the accuracy of deep learning.

  • Robot navigation has seen a major improvement since the the rediscovery of the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the attention it has garnered in research circles. A notable achievement in the area was Deep Learning (DL) application in computer vision with outstanding daily life applications such as face-recognition, object detection, and more. However, robotics in general still depend on human inputs in certain areas such as localization, navigation, etc. In this paper, we propose a study case of robot navigation based on deep reinforcement technology. We look into the benefits of switching from traditional ROS-based navigation algorithms towards machine learning approaches and methods. We describe the state-of-the-art technology by introducing the concepts of Reinforcement Learning (RL), Deep Learning (DL) and DRL before before focusing on visual navigation based on DRL. The case study preludes further real life deployment in which mobile navigational agent learns to navigate unbeknownst areas.

  • In the past two decades, structural health monitoring (SHM) systems have been widely installed on various civil infrastructures for the tracking of the state of their structural health and the detection of structural damage or abnormality, through long-term monitoring of environmental conditions as well as structural loadings and responses. In an SHM system, there are plenty of sensors to acquire a huge number of monitoring data, which can factually reflect the in-service condition of the target structure. In order to bridge the gap between SHM and structural maintenance and management (SMM), it is necessary to employ advanced data processing methods to convert the original multi-source heterogeneous field monitoring data into different types of specific physical indicators in order to make effective decisions regarding inspection, maintenance and management. Conventional approaches to data analysis are confronted with challenges from environmental noise, the volume of measurement data, the complexity of computation, etc., and they severely constrain the pervasive application of SHM technology. In recent years, with the rapid progress of computing hardware and image acquisition equipment, the deep learning-based data processing approach offers a new channel for excavating the massive data from an SHM system, towards autonomous, accurate and robust processing of the monitoring data. Many researchers from the SHM community have made efforts to explore the applications of deep learning-based approaches for structural damage detection and structural condition assessment. This paper gives a review on the deep learning-based SHM of civil infrastructures with the main content, including a brief summary of the history of the development of deep learning, the applications of deep learning-based data processing approaches in the SHM of many kinds of civil infrastructures, and the key challenges and future trends of the strategy of deep learning-based SHM.

  • In this study, using deep learning, super-resolution images of transmission electron microscope (TEM) images were generated for nanomaterial analysis. 1169 paired images with 256 × 256 pixels (high resolution: HR) from TEM measurements and 32 × 32 pixels (low resolution: LR) produced using the python module openCV were trained with deep learning models. The TEM images were related to DyVO4 nanomaterials synthesized by hydrothermal methods. Mean-absolute-error (MAE), peak-signal-to-noise-ratio (PSNR), and structural similarity (SSIM) were used as metrics to evaluate the performance of the models. First, a super-resolution image (SR) was obtained using the traditional interpolation method used in computer vision. In the SR image at low magnification, the shape of the nanomaterial improved. However, the SR images at medium and high magnification failed to show the characteristics of the lattice of the nanomaterials. Second, to obtain a SR image, the deep learning model includes a residual network which reduces the loss of spatial information in the convolutional process of obtaining a feature map. In the process of optimizing the deep learning model, it was confirmed that the performance of the model improved as the number of data increased. In addition, by optimizing the deep learning model using the loss function, including MAE and SSIM at the same time, improved results of the nanomaterial lattice in SR images were achieved at medium and high magnifications. The final proposed deep learning model used four residual blocks to obtain the characteristic map of the low-resolution image, and the super-resolution image was completed using Upsampling2D and the residual block three times.

  • Objective : Deep learning is a machine learning approach based on artificial neural network training, and object detection algorithm using deep learning is used as the most powerful tool in image analysis. We analyzed and evaluated the diagnostic performance of a deep learning algorithm to identify skull fractures in plain radiographic images and investigated its clinical applicability. Methods : A total of 2026 plain radiographic images of the skull (fracture, 991; normal, 1035) were obtained from 741 patients. The RetinaNet architecture was used as a deep learning model. Precision, recall, and average precision were measured to evaluate the deep learning algorithm's diagnostic performance. Results : In ResNet-152, the average precision for intersection over union (IOU) 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5, were 0.7240, 0.6698, and 0.3687, respectively. When the intersection over union (IOU) and confidence threshold were 0.1, the precision was 0.7292, and the recall was 0.7650. When the IOU threshold was 0.1, and the confidence threshold was 0.6, the true and false rates were 82.9% and 17.1%, respectively. There were significant differences in the true/false and false-positive/false-negative ratios between the anterior-posterior, towne, and both lateral views (p=0.032 and p=0.003). Objects detected in false positives had vascular grooves and suture lines. In false negatives, the detection performance of the diastatic fractures, fractures crossing the suture line, and fractures around the vascular grooves and orbit was poor. Conclusion : The object detection algorithm applied with deep learning is expected to be a valuable tool in diagnosing skull fractures.
