This paper presents the results of reduced scale model tests on the effect of fault zone characteristics on the tunnel deformation behavior. A series of model tests were carried out on deep tunnels considering different fault zone orientations and offset distance. The tunnelling process was simulated in the model tests using compressed air technique. During the tests, the tunnel and ground deformation were mainly monitored while reducing the pressure inside the tunnel and the relationship between the pressure level and the tunnel deformation were established. The results indicate that for a given offset distance the tunnel behavior is influenced the most when the fault zone dips vertically while smallest influence occurs when the fault zone dips 45 degrees.

This paper concerns the effect of orientation and geometric characteristics of a fracture zone on the tunnel behavior using a numerical investigation. A parametric study was executed on a number of drill and blast tunnelling cases representing different fracture and tunnelling conditions using two and three dimensional finite element analyses. The variables considered include the strike and dip angle of fracture zone relative to the longitudinal tunnel axis, the width and the clearance of the fracture zone, the tunnel depth, and the initial lateral stress coefficient. The results of the analyses were examined in terms of the tunnel deformation including crown settlement, convergence, and invert heave as well as shotcrete lining stresses. The results indicate that the tunnel deformation as well as the shotcrete lining stress are strongly influenced by the orientation of the fracture zone, and that such a trend becomes more pronounced for tunnels with greater depths.
This study conducted Trapdoor tests with actual tunnel shape, investigated the mechanical behavior of ground and loosening load on tunnels, and evaluated the mechanism of progressive failure by numerical simulation. The loosening load sharply decreased initially, but it generally increased and reached the stabilized level exhibiting the arching effect, and loose sand showed relatively higher values than those of dense sand. The shear band started from the tunnel shoulder with $63^{\circ}$ (loose sand) to $69^{\circ}$ (dense sand), and gently curved inward to the ground surface. The widths of shear band formation above the tunnel showed a range from 1.8b to 1.9b (b=Tunnel width), which are similar to those values calculated from existing formular. The vertical height of this shear band for deep tunnel was turned out to be a bit lower than that from existing studies (3.0*Tunnel Height).
The 11 nuclear power plants have been taking charge of more than 40% of the total electrical power development in Korea. In addition to the existing nuclear power plants at Gori, Wolsung, Youngkwang, etc., the 12 nuclear power plants are expected to be newly established until 2006. So, the 23 nuclear power plants will produce the electric power as much as more than 50% of the national gross production. However the nuclear power plants are inevitably generating the detrimental atomic wastes. Therefore the disposal techniques for the nuclear wastes should be ensured considering a very high safety factor. According to the basic researches in KAERI, the underground disposal repositories are reported to be most favorable for Korea. The KBS-3 disposal system has been strongly suggested by KAERI and this system has a deep tunnel with several disposal boreholes in tunnel floor. The nuclear wastes, which are sealed tightly in a canister, will be disposed in these boreholes. Considering the disposal tunnel in a great depth, the in-situ stress regimes will affect severely the tunnel stability. Consequently the effect of the in-situ stresses on the disposal tunnel and the role of the in-situ stresses in tunnel stability analysis are examined by the numerical studies.

In the ease that a new cross tunnel is constructed under the existing tunnel, development of a longitudinal arching would be influenced by the existing tunnel. But it is not enough to investigate. Especially, the influence of the structure loads on the ground surface on the new tunnel, which the under-passes existing tunnel has been rarely studied. This study, therefore, aimed to clarify the effect of the existing tunnel and the structure on the ground surface on the development of a longitudinal ground arching during the excavation of a cross tunnel under the existing tunnel. Two-dimensional model tests were carried out in the test box, whose dimension was 30 cm (wide) ${\times}$ 113 cm (deep) ${\times}$ 87 cm (high). The existing tunnel was made of S21 steel tube in 16 cm diameter and 1 mm thickness. The ground surface load was 4.9 kPa and was loaded on the model structure in the size with 30 cm width ${\times}$ 16 cm height. New tunnel was excavated in 250 mm height by a bench cut method. As results, the longitudinal arching would be developed but it was severely influenced by not only the existing upper tunnel but also the ground surface load. The influence of the ground surface load on the development of longitudinal ground arching around a new tunnel showed the highest value when the tunnel face located direct under the surface load.
The unloading effect from excavations can cause the deformation of adjacent tunnels, which may seriously influence the operation and safety of those tunnels. However, systematic studies of the deformation characteristics of tunnels located along side excavations are limited, and simplified methods to predict the influence of excavations on tunnels are also rare. In this study, the simulation capability of a finite element method (FEM) considering the small-strain characteristics of soil was verified using a case study. Then, a large number of FEM simulations examining the influence of excavations on adjacent tunnels were conducted. Based on the simulation results, the deformation characteristics of tunnels at different positions and under four deformation modes of the retaining structure were analyzed. The results indicate that the deformation mode of the retaining structure has a significant influence on the deformation of certain tunnels. When the deformation magnitudes of the retaining structures are the same, the influence degree of the excavation on the tunnel increased in this order: from cantilever type to convex type to composite type to kick-in type. In practical projects, the deformation mode of the retaining structure should be optimized according to the tunnel position, and kick-in deformation should be avoided. Furthermore, two methods to predict the influence of excavations on adjacent tunnels are proposed. Design charts, in terms of normalized tunnel deformation contours, can be used to quantitatively estimate the tunnel deformation. The design table of the excavation influence zones can be applied to determine which influence zone the tunnel is located in.

Congestion of the city with the rapid industrial development was accelerated to build complex social infrastructure. And numerous structures have been designed and constructed in accordance with these requirements. Recently, to solve complex urban traffic, many researches of large-diameter tunnel under construction downtown are in progress. The large-diameter tunnel has been developed with a versatile double-deck of deep depth tunnel. For the safe tunnel construction, ground reinforcement methods have been developed in the weakened pillar section like as junction of tunnel. This paper focuses on evaluation of the effects of new developed ground reinforcement methods in double-deck junction. The values of reinforcement determined from the existing and developed methods were compared to each other by numerical simulation.
The practical usage of underground space and demand for vehicular tunnels necessitate the construction of non-circular wide rectangular tunnels. However, constructing large tunnels in soft clayey soil conditions with no ground improvement can lead to excessive ground deformations and collapse. In recent years, in situ ground improvement techniques such as jet grouting and deep cement mixing are often utilized to perform cement-stabilisation around the tunnel boundary to prevent large deformations and failure. This paper discusses the stability characteristics and failure behaviour of a wide rectangular tunnel in cement-treated soft clays. First, the plane strain finite element model is developed and validated with the results of centrifuge model tests available in the past literature. The critical tunnel support pressures computed from the numerical study are found to be in good agreement with those of centrifuge model tests. The influence of varying strength and thickness of improved soil surround, and cover depth are studied on the stability and failure modes of a rectangular tunnel. It is observed that the failure behaviour of the tunnel in improved soil surround depends on the ratio of the strength of improved soil surround to the strength of surrounding soil, i.e., qui/qus, rather than just qui. For low qui/qus ratios, the stability increases with the cover; however, for the high strength improved soil surrounds with qui >> qus, the stability decreases with the cover. The failure chart, modified stability equation, and stability chart are also proposed as preliminary design guidelines for constructing rectangular tunnels in the improved soil surrounded by soft clays.
It has long been studied about the flow around bluff bodies, but the effect of aspect ratio on the sharp-edged bodies in thick turbulent boundary layers is still argued. The author investigates the flow characteristics around a series of rectangular bodies ($40^d{\times}80^w{\times}80^h$, $80^d{\times}80^w{\times}80^h$ and $160^d{\times}80^w{\times}80^h$ in mm) placed in a deep turbulent boundary layer. The study is aiming to identify the extant Reynolds number independence of the rectangular bodies and furthermore understand the surface pressure distribution around the bodies such as the suction pressure in the leading edge, when the shape of bodies is changed, responsible for producing extreme suction pressures around the bluff bodies. The experiments are carried out at three different Reynolds numbers, based on the velocity U at the body height h, of 24,000, 46,000 and 67,000, and large enough that the mean boundary layer flow is effectively Reynolds number independent. The experiment includes wind tunnel work with the velocity and surface pressure measurements. The results show that the generation of the deep turbulent boundary layer in the wind tunnel and the surface pressure around the bodies were all independent of Reynolds number and the longitudinal length, but highly dependent of the transverse width.
