  • Gravity field analysis and density modeling were performed to evaluate the internal state of the rock mass, which is the cause of cut slope collapse. The shape of the weathered zone and the depth of basement could be confirmed from the complete Bouguer anomaly and density model. The basement depth at the center of the cut slope calculated using the Euler deconvolution inverse method is 30 m, which is about 10 m deeper than the surrounding area. In addition, the depth of basement and the thickness of the weathered zone are similar to the boundary between low resistivity and high resistivity in dipole-dipole survey. From the study results, gravity field analysis and density modeling recognizes the internal state of the rock slope and can be used for slope safety analysis, and is particularly suitable as a method to determine the shape of weathered zones in interpreting the safety of cut slopes

  • Passive source depth estimation has been studied for decades since the source depth can be used for target classification, target tracking, etc. The purpose of this paper is to solve the problem of ambiguity in the previous paper [S.-il. Cho et al. (in Korean), J. Acoust. Soc. Kr. 38, 120-127 (2019)] that source depth is estimated in two points. The patterns of phase shift of Channel Impulse Response(CIR) reflected in ocean surface and bottom is used for removing ambiguity of the source depth estimation, and after removing ambiguity, source depth is estimated at one point through the intersection of CIR. In order to extract CIR in case of unknown source signal and continuous signal or noise, Ray-based blind deconvolution is used. The proposed algorithm is demonstrated through numerical simulation in ocean waveguide.

  • To analyze the tectonic movements of the Geumwang Fault and its association with development of the Pungam Basin, the distributions of the gravity field and aeromagnetic field were interpreted. The low gravity zone (LGZ) around the Geumwang Fault shows an asymmetrical distribution, indicating sinistral (left-lateral) movement with the left side of the fault moving southeastward. The observed gravity anomaly suggests a displacement of approximately 9.3 km. The aeromagnetic distribution supports this horizontal displacement with very distinct magnetic characteristics. Using Euler deconvolution, the average depth of the Geumwang Fault was calculated to be about 1,000 meters, and it is estimated that the southwest side of the Pungam Basin is approximately 700 meters deeper than the northeast side. This strongly suggests that the Geumwang Fault has moved not only in a strike-slip but also in a dip direction. Such fault movement is characteristic of a hinge fault and has contributed to the formation of the basin through fault margin sag.

  • Using airborne magnetic data, magnetic characteristics were studied at the Samryangjin caldera area developed in the volcanics of the Yuchon sub-basin, the south eastern part of the Gyeongsang basin. Residual magnetics, reduction to the pole, horizontal derivative, and vertical derivative maps are prepared. Using these maps, the magnetic lithofaces are zoned and the geological structures such as caldera and faults were qualitatively interpreted. In addition, the two quantitative interpretations were performed. Firstly, the forward modelling were done to the 14.5 line km crossing the caldera area to the northeast-southwest direction. Applying the 3-D Euler deconvolution method to the whole study area, the depth extent and the characteristics of the magnetic anomalous bodies were studied. According to the results, the magnetic lithofaces of the area are zoned by 4 units. In general, these are well matched with the geological distributions. But the biotite granites intruded in the northern boundary of the Samryangjin caldera show the high magnetic intensity, while the biotite granites of the other areas show the low magnetic intensity and the different magnetic lithofaces. Thus, we interpreted that the biotite granites are closely related with the volcanic activity of the Samryngjin caldera, and are intruded in the fracture zones developed along the caldera rim. The Samryangjin caldera and fault structures of the area can be easily recognized by the distinct magnetic structures from the various magnetic anomaly maps. Also the topographic characteristics well reflect these structures. The results of the forward modelling show that the magnetic basement depth of the Gyeongsang sedimentary basin is on the average about 6 km and in maximum 10 km. And the depth becomes shallower toward the caldera boundary due to the shallow intrusion of the volcanics. The results of the 3-D Euler method also show the caldera and fault structures. And the relatively shallow magnetic anomalous bodies which are related with the volcanics are generally developed to the east-west and northeast directions, while the deep magnetic anomalous bodies to the northwest direction.

  • High-resolution images are drawn from existing seismic data which were originally obtained by Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute (KORDI) during 1994-1997 for deep seismic studies on the East Sea of Korea. These images are analyzed for mapping Quaternary faults and near-bottom gas pockets. First 12 channels are selected from shot gathers for reprocessing. The processing sequence adopted for high-resolution seismic images comprises data copy, trace editing, true amplitude recovery, common-midpoint sorting, initial muting, prestack deconvolution, bandpass filtering, stacking, highpass filtering, poststack deconvolution, f-x migration, and automatic gain control (AGC). Among these processing steps, predictive deconvolution, highpass filtering, and short window AGC are the most significant in enhancement of resolution. More than 200 Quaternanry faults are interpreted on the migrated sections in the shallow depths beneath the seafloor. Although numerous faults are found mostly at the western continental slope and boundaries of the Ulleung Basin, significant amount of the faults are also indicated within the basin. Many of these faults are believed to be formed with reactivation of basement, from geotectonic activities including volcanism, and often originated in Tertiary, indicating that the tectonic regime of the East Sea might be unstable. Existence of shallow gas pockets casts real hazardous warnings to deep-sea drillings and/or to underwater constructions such as inter-island cables and gas pipelines. On the other hand, discovery of these gas pockets heightens the interests in developing natural resources in the East Sea. Reprocessed seismic sections, however, show no typical seismic characteristics for gas hydrates such as bottom-simulating reflectors in the western continental slope and ocean floor.

  • This review paper outlines modern pretreatment methods used in NIR spectroscopy. The pretreatment methods can be divided into four categories. One method in is noise reduction. Smoothing is a representative method for the noise reduction. Another is baseline correction. The second derivative and multiplicative scatter correction (MSC) are most frequently employed for baseline correction. The third is centering and normalization and the last is resolution enhancement. Difference spectra, mean centering and second derivative are used in NIR spectroscopy as resolution enhancement methods. In this paper advantages and drawbacks of pretreatment methods currently used in NIR spectroscopy are discussed with many examples of NIR spectra.

  • This paper describes an effective algorithm for evaluating the reliability indices and calculating the production cost for generation system with thermal, hydro and pumped storage plants. Using the Energy Invariance property, this algorithm doesn't need deconvolution process which gives large burden in computing time. In order to consider an adaptable load model, we consider the system load with forecasting uncertainty. The proposed algorithm is applied to the KEPCO system and its result shows high accuracy and less computing time.

  • A high-resolution seismic survey was conducted at the northeastern boundary of Pungam basin, one of the Cretaceous sedimentary basins in Korea. A 100 kg weight was used as an energy source and was found to be better than a sledge hammer in mapping deeper geologic structures. Several processing techniques such as f-k filtering, predictive deconvolution, and time-variant filtering are useful to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio by suppressing unwanted seismic energy. Four seismic units are recognized where many vertical faults are developed. The boundary fault between sedimentary rocks and Precambrian gneiss is identified along with a fracture zone of approximately 30 m wide. Bedding planes of the sedimentary rocks dipping westward are interpreted to be limbs of a syncline or volcanic flow. There faults and tilted bedding planes indicate that the basin had undergone significant tectonic deformation.

  • A Digital X-ray imaging system using Compton backscattering has been developed to obtain a cross-sectional profile and mass loss of corroded lap-splices of aging aircraft from density variation. A slit-type camera was designed to focus on a small scattering volume inside the material, from which the backscattered photons are collected by a collimated scintillator detector for interpretation of material characteristics. The cross section of the lap-joint is scanned by moving the scattering volume through the thickness direction of the specimen. The mass loss of each layer has been estimated from a Compton backscatter A-scan to obtain the thickness of each layer including the aluminum sheet, the corrosion layer and the sealant. Quantitative information such as location and width of planar corrosion in the lap splices of fuselages is obtained by deconvolution using a nonlinear least-square error minimization method(BFGS method): A simple reconstruction model is also introduced to overcome distortion of the Compton backscatter data due to attenuation effects attributed to beam hardening and quantum noise.
