  • This paper is concerned with designing and implementing the Internet shopping mall by using virtual reality-driven avatar and web decision support system. Traditionally, the Internet shopping mall has been designed based on the combination of several hyperlinks, images, and texts. However, this sort of approach results in a lower performance because possible customers cannot make more accurate shopping decisions. To overcome this kind of pitfalls facing the current Internet shopping malls, we propose using a combination of virtual reality and web DSS. The main virtues of our proposed approach to designing the Internet shopping mall are as follows: First, the virtual reality technique is emerging as one of alternative guaranteeing a sense of reality for customers part and facilitating the complex process of shopping decision makings. Especially, the avatar, which is an artificially designed man working on the Internet, can make easy and absorbing the Internet shopping-related decision making processes. Second, the web DSS approach can provide an effective decision support mechanism for customers. Especially, we design a set of intelligent agents for the proposed web DSS. Experimental results with an illustrative example showed that our proposed approach can yield a new Internet shopping mall paradigm with which customers can benefit from a high level of decision support functions.

  • Bridges are essential and valuable elements in road and rail transportation networks. Bridge remediation is a top priority for asset managers, but identifying the nature of true defect deterioration and associated remediation treatments remains a complex task. Nowadays Decision Support Systems (DSS) are used extensively to assist in decision-making across a wide spectrum of unstructured decision environments. In this paper a requirements-driven framework is used to develop a risk based decision support model which has the ability to quantify the bridge condition and find the best remediation treatments using Multi Attribute Utility Theory (MAUT), with the aim of maintaining a bridge within acceptable limits of safety, serviceability and sustainability.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the direction of decision support for senior citizens living alone by identifying the level of self-determination and desire for decision support. The survey was conducted on 300 elderly people living alone in five districts of Seoul. The analysis results are as follows: First, it has been shown that elderly living alone have thought that it is most important to reflect their decisions when deciding where to live. Second, respondents highly recognized that the need for support decision making as the age group grew. Third, it was found that the factors affecting the perception of the need to support decision-making by senior citizens living alone were age, trust in family and recognition of importance in decision-making. The study suggested the need for a specific, institutionalized system to support decision making for elderly living alone.

  • It is not easy for business workers to find proper information for his job, because of the following problems:(1) information exist in various information system both internal and external with diverse formats(2) he cannot estimate relevance of all the information and (3) he cannot select proper information among large volume of information. The requirements for the systems are the following things:(1) search of relevant information from various internal and external information systems(2) proving an integrated view of information for workers, and (3) information processing and decision-making are seamlessly integrated fro business workers. We proposed an agent system to fulfill the requirements. We focus on the purchasing job, and developed a prototype system. PIPA(Purchasing Information Process Agent). The PIPA performs not only information processing jobs(information search gathering, display, business form -making)but also decision-making support job (evaluation of supplier candidates, and apply of sourcing policy) for sourcing manager. The framework of the PIPA can be appled to other information processing and desision-making jobs.

  • The spread of infectious diseases in the event of livestock is getting faster and the route of spread gets more varied. It is important for the responsible agency to detect early and establish a prevention and surveillance system. If the spread cannot be contained effectively, great damage and loss will be inevitable in terms of social, environment and economic aspects as well as the welfare of the farmers. At present in Korea, a web-based Infectious Livestock Diseases Statistics System (AIMS: Animal Infectious Disease Data Management System) has been already implemented for this purpose and the service is available to the general public. But this system does not provide geospatial information and does not provide support for decision making and does not provide multi-dimensional information. In this study, an open source-based SOLAP (Spatial On-Line Analytical Processing) technology is applied to enable many diverse forms of data analysis from many aspects to support decision making. The SOLAP system was designed to integrate geospatial information and the analysis of information has been largely divided into map-based analysis and table-based analysis.

  • Change detection using aerial and satellite images is one of the important research topics in photogrammetry and image interpretation. It is of particular importance especially in the fields of military, political and administrative affairs. When there is a need to detect changes in multi-temporal images, the most efficient methods for change detection and thresholds of change/no change area need to be chosen. Also, the images obtained from the various methods need to be analyzed. To do so, we need a system that can support our decision making process. Therefore, in this paper, we propose the Decision Support System for Change Detection. This system is composed of Data Base, Model Base and Graphic User Interface(GUI). Data base is a compilation of previous change detection results, and Model Base comprise of numerous operations. The data can be input and have the results of change detection analyzed by using GUI. In this paper, we will explain the entire operation of the system and demonstrate the level of its effectiveness.

  • Human decision-making is a complex behavior. A replication of human decision making offers a potential to enhance the capacity of intelligent systems by providing additional user assistance in decision making. By reducing the effort and task complexity on behalf of the user, such replication would improve the overall user experience, and affect the degree of intelligence exhibited by the system. This paper explores individuals' decision-making processes when using recommender systems, and its related outcomes. In this study, human decision-making (HDM) refers to the selection of an item from a given set of options that are shown as recommendations to a user. The goal of our study was to identify IS constructs that contribute towards such decision-making, thereby contributing towards creating a mental model of HDM. This was achieved through recording Electroencephalographic (EEG) readings of subjects while they performed a decision-making activity. Readings from 16 righthanded healthy avid readers reflect that reward, theory of mind, risk, calculation, task intention, emotion, sense of touch, ambiguity and decision making are the primary constructs that users employ while deciding from a given set of recommendations in an online bookstore. In all 10 distinct brain areas were identified. These brain areas that lead to their respective constructs were found to be cingulate gyrus, precentral gyrus, inferior parietal lobule, posterior cingulate, medial frontal gyrus, anterior cingulate, postcentral gyrus, superior frontal gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus, and middle frontal gyrus (also referred to as dorsolateral prefrontal gyrus (DLPFC)). The identified constructs would help in developing a design theory for enhancing user assistance, especially in the context of recommender systems.

  • This paper aims to describe how the decision making capability and context-aware computing are jointly used to establish ubiquitous applications. An amended DSS paradigm: CKDDM is proposed in this paper. Under the CKDDM paradigm, a framework of ubiquitous decision support systems (ubiDSS) is addressed with the description of the subsystems within.
