A network-coding-based scheme is proposed to improve the energy efficiency of distributed storage systems in WSNs (Wireless Sensor Networks). We mainly focus on two problems: firstly, consideration is given to effective distributed storage technology; secondly, we address how to effectively repair the data in failed storage nodes. For the first problem, we propose a method to obtain a sparse generator matrix to construct network codes, and this sparse generator matrix is proven to be the sparsest. Benefiting from this matrix, the energy consumption required to implement distributed storage is reduced. For the second problem, we designed a network-coding-based iterative repair method, which adequately utilizes the idea of re-encoding at intermediate nodes from network coding theory. Benefiting from the re-encoding, the energy consumption required by data repair is significantly reduced. Moreover, we provide an explicit lower bound of field size required by this scheme, which implies that it can work over a small field and the required computation overhead is very low. The simulation result verifies that the proposed scheme not only reduces the total energy consumption required to implement distributed storage system in WSNs, but also balances energy consumption of the networks.

This paper proposes the wavelet image coding using the significant cluster extraction by morphology and the adaptive quantization. In the conventional MRWD method, the additional seed data takes large potion of the total data bits. The proposed method extracts the significant cluster using morphology to improve the coding efficiency. In addition, the adaptive quantization is proposed to reduce the number of redundant comparative operations which are indispensably occurred in the MRWD quantization. The experimental result shows that the proposed algorithm has the improved coding efficiency and computational cost while preserving superior PSNR

Guaranteeing interoperability between devices and applications is the core role of standards organizations. Since its first JPEG standard in 1992, the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) has published several image coding standards that have been successful in a plethora of imaging markets. Recently, these markets have become subject to potentially disruptive innovations owing to the rise of new imaging modalities such as light fields, point clouds, and holography. These so-called plenoptic modalities hold the promise of facilitating a more efficient and complete representation of 3D scenes when compared to classic 2D modalities. However, due to the heterogeneity of plenoptic products that will hit the market, serious interoperability concerns have arisen. In this paper, we particularly focus on the holographic modality and outline how the JPEG committee has addressed these tremendous challenges. We discuss the main use cases and provide a preliminary list of requirements. In addition, based on the discussion of real-valued and complex data representations, we elaborate on potential coding technologies that range from approaches utilizing classical 2D coding technologies to holographic content-aware coding solutions. Finally, we address the problem of visual quality assessment of holographic data covering both visual quality metrics and subjective assessment methodologies.

Light Field (LF) camera captures not only the light intensity but also the light direction coming to camera. While the rich information captured by LF camera enables many interesting applications such as digital refocusing, viewpoint changing, and 3D reconstruction, but it also requires powerful coding tools to reduce its large volume of data. In this paper, we investigate using the intra prediction scheme of the versatile video coding (VVC), which is the most recent video coding technology currently under developing, to compress the LF image. The Intra Block Copy (IBC) technique in VVC is exploited considering special LF image structure. The experimental result shows that VVC intra predict ion outperforms the H.265/HEVC intra coding technique in encoding LF data irrespective of using the IBC mode or not.

Employing multiple drones as a swarm to complete missions can sharply improve the working efficiency and expand the scope of investigation. Remote UAV swarms utilize satellites as relays to forward investigation information. The increasing amount of data demands higher transmission rate and complex field network coding (CFNC) is deemed as an effective solution for data return. CFNC applied to UAV swarms enhances transmission efficiency by occupying only two time slots, which is less than other network coding schemes. However, conventional CFNC applied to UAVs is combined with constant coding and modulation scheme and results in a waste of spectrum resource when the channel conditions are better. In order to avoid the waste of power resources of the relay satellite and further improve spectral efficiency, a CFNC transmission scheme with MPSK modulation is proposed in this paper. For the proposed scheme, the satellite relay no longer directly forwards information, but transmits information after processing according to the current channel state. The proposed transmission scheme not only maintains throughput advantage of CFNC, but also enhances spectral efficiency, which obtains higher throughput performance. The symbol error probability (SEP) and throughput results corroborated by Monte Carlo simulation show that the proposed transmission scheme improves spectral efficiency in multiples compared to the conventional CFNC schemes. In addition, the proposed transmission scheme enhances the throughput performance for different topology structures while keeping SEP below a certain value.

Background: It is not possible to measure how much activity is required to understand and code a medical data. We introduce an assessment method in clinical coding, and applied this method to neurosurgical terms. Methods: Coding activity consists of two stages. At first, the coders need to understand a presented medical term (informational activity). The second coding stage is about a navigating terminology browser to find a code that matches the concept (code-matching activity). Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine - Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT) was used for the coding system. A new computer application to record the trajectory of the computer mouse and record the usage time was programmed. Using this application, we measured the time that was spent. A senior neurosurgeon who has studied SNOMED CT has analyzed the accuracy of the input coding. This method was tested by five neurosurgical residents (NSRs) and five medical record administrators (MRAs), and 20 neurosurgical terms were used. Results: The mean accuracy of the NSR group was 89.33%, and the mean accuracy of the MRA group was 80% (p=0.024). The mean duration for total coding of the NSR group was 158.47 seconds, and the mean duration for total coding of the MRA group was 271.75 seconds (p=0.003). Conclusion: We proposed a method to analyze the clinical coding process. Through this method, it was possible to accurately calculate the time required for the coding. In neurosurgical terms, NSRs had shorter time to complete the coding and higher accuracy than MRAs.
This paper has been studied a wavelet based still image transmission over the wireless channel. EZW(Embedded Zerotree Wavelet) is an efficient and scalable wavelet based image coding technique, which provides progressive transfer of signal resulted in multi-resolution representation. It reduces therefore the reduce cost of storage media. Although EZW has many advantages, it is very sensitive on error. Because coding are performed in subband by subband, and it uses arithmetic coding which is a kind of variable length coding. Therefore only 1∼2bit error may degrade quality of the entire image. So study of error localization and recovery are required. This paper investigates the use of reversible variable length codes(RVLC) and data partitioning. RVLC are known to have a superior error recovery property due to their two-way decoding capability and data partitioning is essential to applying RVLC. In this work, we show that appropriate data partitioning length for each SNR(Signal-to-Noise Power Ratio) and error localization in wireless channel.
The MPEG-2 video compressed bitstream is very sensitive to transmission errors due to the complex coding structure of the MPEG-2 video coding standard. If one packet is lost or received with errors, not only the current frame will be corrupted, but also errors will propagate to succeeding frames within a group of pictures. Therefore, we employ various error resilient coding/decoding techniques to protect and reduce the transmission error effects. Error concealment technique is one of them. Error concealment technique exploits spatial and temporal redundancies of the correctly received video data to conceal the corrupted video data. Motion vector recovery and compensation with the estimated motion vector is good approach to conceal the corrupted data. In this paper, we propose various error concealment algorithms based on motion vector recovery, and compare their performance to those of conventional error concealment methods.

SVC layered video is consists of a Base Layer (BL) and Enhancement Layer (EL). Without the base layer decoding, the higher EL layer can not be decoded. Therefore, successful transfer of the BL is important factor for improving the SVC video data. In this paper, we propose a network coding of layered video to improve success decoding probability with the importance order of the video data over a multi-relay system. We shows that formula analysis and experimental results of the proposed network coding scheme. In addition, we shows performance of video quality according to the number of relays.

Network coding (NC) is a promising technology that can improve available bandwidth and packet throughput in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Sliding window is an improved technology of NC, which is a supplement of TCP/IP technology and can improve data throughput and network lifetime on WSNs. This paper proposes a network coding-based maximum lifetime algorithm for sliding window in WSNs (NC-MLSW) which improves the throughput and network lifetime in WSN. The packets on the source node are sent on the WSNs. The intermediate node encodes the received original packet and forwards the newly encoded packet to the next node. Finally, the destination node decodes the received encoded data packet and recovers the original packet. The performance of the NC-MLSW algorithm is studied using NS2 simulation software and the network packet throughput, network lifetime and data packet loss rate were evaluated. The simulations experiment results show that the NC-MLSW algorithm can obviously improve the network packet throughput and network lifetime.
