The present paper is devoted to vibration canceling and shape control of piezoelastic slender beams. Taking into account the presence of electric networks, an extended electromechanically coupled Bernoulli-Euler beam theory for passive piezoelectric composite structures is shortly introduced in the first part of our contribution. The second part of the paper deals with the concept of passive shape control of beams using shaped piezoelectric layers and tuned inductive networks. It is shown that an impedance matching and a shaping condition must be fulfilled in order to perfectly cancel vibrations due to an arbitrary harmonic load for a specific frequency. As a main result of the present paper, the correctness of the theory of passive shape control is demonstrated for a harmonically excited piezoelelastic cantilever by a finite element calculation based on one-dimensional Bernoulli-Euler beam elements, as well as by the commercial finite element code of ANSYS using three-dimensional solid elements. Finally, an outlook for the practical importance of the passive shape control concept is given: It is shown that harmonic vibrations of a beam with properly shaped layers according to the presented passive shape control theory, which are attached to an resistor-inductive circuit (RL-circuit), can be significantly reduced over a large frequency range compared to a beam with uniformly distributed piezoelectric layers.
Ice accretions on stay cables may result in the instable vibration of galloping, which would affect the safety of cable-stayed bridges. A large number of studies have investigated the galloping vibrations of transmission lines. However, the obtained aerodynamics in transmission lines cannot be directly applied to the stay cables on cable-stayed bridges. In this study, linear and nonlinear single degree-of-freedom models were introduced to obtain the critical galloping wind velocity of iced stay cables where the aerodynamic lift and drag coefficients were identified in the wind tunnel tests. Specifically, six ice shapes were discussed using section models with geometric scale 1:1. The results presented obvious sudden decrease regions of the aerodynamic lift coefficient for all six test models. Numerical analyses of iced stay cables associated to a medium-span cable-stayed bridge were carried out to evaluate the potential galloping instability. The obtained nonlinear critical wind velocity for a 243-meter-long stay cable is much lower than the design wind velocity. The calculated linear critical wind velocity is even lower. In addition, numerical analyses demonstrated that increasing structural damping could effectively mitigate the galloping vibrations of iced stay cables.

Structural vibrations generated by earthquakes and wind loads can be controlled by varying the structural parameters such as mass, stiffness, damping ratio, and geometry and providing a certain amount of passive or active reaction forces. A Double-Tuned Mass Dampers (DTMDs) system, which is simple and more effective than the conventional single tuned mass damper (TMD) system for vibration mitigation is presented. Two TMDs tuned to the first two natural frequencies were used to control vibrations. Experimental investigations were carried out on a three degrees-of-freedom frame model to investigate the effectiveness of DTMDs systems in controlling displacements, accelerations, and base shear. Numerical models were developed and validated against the experimental results. The validation showed a good match between the experimental and numerical results. The validated model was employed to investigate the behavior of a five degrees-of-freedom shear building structure, wherein mass dampers with different mass ratios were considered. The effectiveness of the DTMDs system was investigated for harmonic, seismic, and white noise base excitations. The proposed system was capable of significantly reducing the story displacements, accelerations, and base shears at the first and second natural frequencies, as compared to conventional single TMD.
For estimating the vortex excited vibrations of overhead transmission lines, the Energy Balance Principle (EBP) is well established for spans damped near the ends. Although it involves radical simplifications, the method is known to give useful estimates of the maximum vibration levels. For very long spans, there often is the need for a large number of in-span fittings, such as in-span Stockbridge dampers, aircraft warning spheres etc. This adds complexity to the problem and makes the energy balance principle in its original form unsuitable. In this paper, a modified version of EBP is described taking into account in-span damping and in particular also aircraft warning spheres. In the first step the complex transcendental eigenvalue problem is solved for the conductor with in-span fittings. With the thus determined complex eigenvalues and eigenfunctions a modified energy balance principle is then used for scaling the amplitudes of vibrations at each resonance frequency. Bending strains are then estimated at the critical points of the conductor. The approach has been used by the authors for studying the influence of in-span Stockbridge dampers and aircraft warning spheres; and for optimizing their positions in the span. The modeling of the aircraft warning sphere is also described in some detail.
Advanced tanks in the future combat system are expected to have the trends of large caliber, high explosive shell and light weight for destructive power and improvement in mobility. Their guns are required to have longer barrels to meet increased muzzle exit velocities. However, as the length of the barrel is extended, the vibrations induced by the breech forces in fire and the terrain lead to increased muzzle pointing errors. Therefore, the fire-induced and terrain-induced vibrations must be attenuated. A method to reduce these vibrations without the significant increase of the gun mass is to use the forward thermal shroud as part of a tuned mass damper. In this study, the dynamically-tuned-shroud using this shroud and leaf springs is introduced and its effectiveness on the vibration attenuations of the barrel are verified. The parametric studies on the stiffness of these leaf springs are performed and the analytical results are verified using the experimental model of the dynamically-tuned-shroud.
The sealed, tuned liquid column gas damper (TLCGD) with gas-spring effect extends the frequency range of application up to about 5 Hz and efficiently increases the modal structural damping. In this paper the influence of several TLCGDs to reduce coupled translational and rotational vibrations of plan-asymmetric buildings under wind or seismic loads is investigated. The locations of the modal centers of velocity of rigidly assumed floors are crucial to select the design and the optimal position of the liquid absorbers. TLCGD's dynamics can be derived in detail using the extended non-stationary Bernoulli's equation for moving reference systems. Modal tuning of the TLCGD renders the optimal parameters by means of a geometrical transformation and in analogy to the classical tuned mass damper (TMD). Subsequently, fine-tuning is conveniently performed in the state space domain. Numerical simulations illustrate a significant reduction of the vibrations of plan-asymmetric buildings by the proposed TLCGDs.
In this paper, an active vibration control of a translating tensioned string with the use of an electro-hydraulic servo mechanism at the right boundary is investigated. The dynamics of the moving strip is modeled as a string with tension by using Hamilton’s principle for the systems with changing mass. The control objective is to suppress the transverse vibrations of the strip via boundary control. A right boundary control law in the form of current input to the servo valve based upon the Lyapunov’s second method is derived. It is revealed that a time-varying boundary force and a suitable passive damping at the right boundary can successfully suppress the transverse vibrations. The exponential stability of the closed loop system is proved. The effectiveness of the control laws proposed is demonstrated via simulations.
The effect of cable loosening on the nonlinear parametric vibrations of inclined cables is discussed in this paper. In order to overcome the small-sag limitation in calculating loosening for inclined cables, it is necessary to first derive equations of motion for an inclined cable. Using these equations and the finite difference method, the effect of cable loosening on the nonlinear parametric response of inclined cables under periodic support excitation is evaluated. A new technique that takes into account flexural rigidity and damping is proposed as a solution to solve the problem of divergence. The regions of inclined cables that undergo compression are also indicated.
In rotating machinery, unbalance and misalignment are major concerns in vibration. Unbalance can be eliminated by balancing procedure to some degree. but little work has been done on the vibrations that occur in a misaligned rotor system. Currently, no generalized theoretical model based on a rotor system with flexible coupling is available to describe the vibrations caused by misalignment. As a part of systematic investigation on the misalignment, first of all, the study on flexible coupling with misalignment should be preceded. In this study, the geometry and reaction force and moment of a gear coupling with misalignment was investigated, also the theoretical model of a gear coupling with misalignment was presented by using the relationship between geometry and moment of gear coupling. It is expected that the proposed procedure can be applied to derive the theoretical model of other couplings.
Multi-stage deploying beams are useful for transporting parts or products handling in production lines. However, such multi-stage beams are often exposed to unwanted vibration due to the presence of their flexibility and time-varying properties. This paper is concerned with dynamic modeling and analysis of 2-stage axially deploying beams under gravity by using the finite element method. A variable domain finite element method is employed to develop the dynamic model. A rigorous method to account for engagement of two-stage beams during the deploying procedure is introduced by breaking the entire domain into three variable domains. Several deploying strategies are tested to analyze the residual vibrations. Several examples are illustrated to investigate the self-induced damping and the effects of deploying strategy on the vibrations.
