Rotordynamic analysis of a multistage turbine pump using finite element method is performed to investigate the effects of seal wear on Its system behavior. Stiffness and damping coefficients of the 2-axial grooved bearing are obtained as functions of rotating speed. Stiffness and damping coefficients of plane annular seals are calculated as functions of rotating speed as well as seal clearance. As the clearance of seals become larger, these stiffness and damping coefficients decrease drastically so that there can be significant changes in whirl natural frequencies and damping characteristics of the pump rotor system. Although a pump is designed to operate with a sufficient seperation margin from the 1st critical speed, seal wear due to long operation may cause a sudden increase in nitration amplitude by resonance shift and reduce seal damping capability.
This paper describes that the leaf spring damper (LSD) developed by authors can be controled by side clearance between side covers and leaf springs. The test rig and two prototype dampers with different side clearance were manufactured. Experiments were performed to investigate the effects of side clearance on the damping of the leaf spring damper. The stiffness and damping coefficients are obtained from the displacements and the reaction forces generated by rotating the eccentric shaft. All dynamic coefficients are plotted with the excitation frequency which is adjusted by rotating speed of the shaft.

Most of seismic design code provisions provide the design response spectra for defining design earthquake ground motions. The design spectra in the code provisions generally come under the 5% of critical damping value, which corresponds to the responses of common structure under the design earthquake. Energy dissipation devices and seismic isolation systems became more popular and the design response spectra at higher damping levels are required. Damping coefficients can be effectively used in conversion of 5%-damped design spectra into other damping levels. These coefficients in the current seismic design code provisions are based on the strong ground motion records. Since the weak and moderate earthquake data have different characteristics from those of strong earthquake data, the application of these coefficients should be investigated in the weak and moderate earthquakes zones. In this study, damping coefficients based on the weak and moderate ground motions were developed and compared to those of current seismic design code provisions.

This paper raises issues in testing the absorption coefficients of sound-absorptive samples in the standing wave tube according to the Korean standard of KS F 2814. The code does not consider any effect of air-damping during test. This limitation has been shown to yield much variation of sound absorption coefficients for recent sample tests whose coefficients are less than 10 %. An improved method of calculating the sound absorption coefficients is proposed in this work and its effectiveness in real test is also illustrated. Finally, the guide line for the modification of our national standard code KS F 2814 is suggested for the future.

In general ships and FPSOs, roll damping is very small and consequently roll motion is very large at the roll resonance frequency. Proper evaluation of the roll damping coefficient at the resonance frequency is an important task in the study of roll motion and usually it is done by the analysis of free roll decay tests. The relative decrement method based on energy relation has been used mainly for the evaluation of roll damping coefficient from the roll decay test so far. As another method, the logarithmic decrement method based on equivalent linear decay assumption can be used for the same purpose and it is relatively simple. In this paper, both of the relative decrement method and the logarithmic decrement method are used for the evaluation of roll damping coefficient including quadratic damping from the free roll decay tests, and their results are cross-checked for verifying the obtained damping coefficients. Through applications to a box-type floating body equiped with bilge keels, it is shown that the two methods give almost the same damping coefficients in a practical view point and the cross-check of their results is to be a good tool to prevent a possible error. And also the quantitative effects of the bilge keels on the roll damping of box-type floating body are shown and discussed.
In this study, the stiffness and damping coefficients of herringbone grooved air journal bearings are studied. A generalized coordinate transformation method to handle the complex geometry of incompressible fluid bearing is modified for compressible fluid. The modified equations are discretized by the base of finite difference method. A new computer program using Visual C++ language is developed. The load carrying capacity and stiffness and damping coefficients are calculated according to the design parameters like groove depth or the number of grooves and compared to that of plain air journal bearings.

Recently, researches on the free-piston Stirling engines(FPSEs) are actively investigated. FPSEs have merits in its light weight, simple structure, and little need for maintenance, thus becoming a promising solution for the power conversion of renewable energy and waste heat recycle. This paper presents the methodology that estimates damping coefficients using analytical models of linear and nonlinear dynamics for FPSEs, and validates the methodology by comparing with existing experimental results. The analysis model predicts an operable range of linear damping coefficients forming limit cycles by using the root locus, and time responses obtained by numerical integration determines nonlinear damping coefficients. The model predictions are compared with experimental results of the well-known FPSE B-10B. We also investigate the damping characteristics regarding heater temperatures and power piston motions.
Hydropneumatic suspension unit is an important part of tracked vehicles to absorb external impact load exerted from the non-paved road and the cannon discharge. Its absorption performance is strongly influenced by both damping and spring forces of the unit. In this paper, we numerically analyze the damping characteristics of the in-arm-type hydropneumatic suspension unit (ISU) by considering four distinct dynamic modes of the ISU damper: jounce-loading, jounce-unloading, rebound-loading and rebound-unloading. The flow rate coefficients determining the oil flow rate through the damper orifice are decided with the help of independent experiments. The wheel reaction force, the flow rate at cracking and the damping energy are parametrically investigated with respect to the orifice diameter and the wheel motion frequency.

While a rotating inner cylinder executes a periodic translational motion in concentric annulus, the vibration of the rotating inner cylinder is induced by fluid-dynamic forces acting on the cylinder. In the previous study related to journal bearing, the unsteady viscous flow in the annulus and the fluid-dynamic forces were evaluated based on a numerical approach. Considering the dynamic-characteristics of unsteady viscous flow, an approximate analytical method has been developed for estimating added mass, viscous damping and fluid-stiffness coefficients. For the study of flow-induced vibrations and related instabilities, it is of interest to separate the coefficients from the fluid-dynamic forces. The added-mass and viscous damping coefficients for very narrow annular configurations, as journal bearing. can be approximated by considering the gap ratio to the radius of inner cylinder, while the fluid-stiffness coefficient is related to the Reynolds number, the oscillatory Reynolds number and the gap ratio.
The externally pressurized air journal bearings which have two circumferential grooves with inherently compensated restrictors are analyzed. Two circumferential grooves with restrictors are made on the bearing surface in order to increase the stiffness and damping coefficients. In this paper, the dynamic characteristics such as stiffness and damping coefficients of this type of bearings are calculated. As a result of theoretical analysis, it is verified that there exist the groove depth and the distance between two grooves which generate the maximum stiffness at the given bearing dimensions.
