CCQC modal combination rule using load-dependent Ritz vectors

  • Response spectrum method is still an effective approach for the design of buildings with supplemental dampers. In practice, complex complete quadratic combination (CCQC) rule is always used in the response spectrum method to consider the effect of non-classical damping. The conventional CCQC rule is based on exact complex mode vectors. Sometimes the calculated complex mode vectors may be not excited by the external loading and errors in the structural responses always arise due to the mode truncation. Load-dependent Ritz (LDR) vectors are associated with the external loading and LDR vectors not excited can be automatically excluded. Also, contributions of higher modes are implicitly contained in the LDR vectors in terms of static responses. To improve the calculation efficiency and accuracy, LDR vectors are introduced in the CCQC rule in the present study. Firstly, the generation procedure of LDR vectors suitable for non-classical damping system is presented. Compared to the conventional LDR vectors, the LDR vectors herein are complex-valued and named as complex LDR (CLDR) vectors. Based on the CLDR vectors, the CCQC rule is then rederived and an improved response spectrum method is developed. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method in this paper is verified through three typical non-classical damping buildings. Numerical results show that the CLDR vector is superior to the complex mode with the same number in the calculation. Since the generation of CLDR vectors requires less computational cost and storage space, the method proposed in this paper offers an attractive alternative, especially for structures with a large number of degrees of freedom.

A proposal for improving the behavior of CBF braces using an innovative flexural mechanism damper, an experimental and numerical study

  • Despite the considerable lateral stiffness and strength of the Concentrically Braced Frame (CBF), it suffers from low ductility and low seismic dissipating energy capacity. The buckling of the diagonal members of the CBF systems under cyclic loading ended up to the shortcoming against seismic loading. Comprehensive researches have been performing to achieve helpful approaches to prevent the buckling of the diagonal member. Among the recommended ideas, metallic damper revealed a better success than other ideas to enhance the behavior of CBFs. While metallic dampers improve the behavior of the CBF system, they increase constructional costs. Therefore, in this paper, a new steel damper with flexural mechanism is proposed, which is investigated experimentally and numerically. Also, a parametrical revision was carried out to evaluate the effect of thickness, slenderness ratio, angle of the main plate, and height of the main plates on the proposed damper. For the parametrical study, 45 finite element models were analyzed and considered. Experimental results, as well as the numerical results, indicated that the proposed damper enjoys a stable hysteresis loop without any degradation up to a high rotation equal to around 31% that is significantly considerable. Moreover, it showed a suitable performance in case of ductility and energy dissipating. Besides, the necessary formulas to design the damper, the required relations were proposed to design the elements outside the damper to ensure the damper acts as a ductile fuse.

Mechanics model of novel compound metal damper based on Bi-objective shape optimization

  • Traditional metal dampers have disadvantages such as a higher yield point and inadequate adjustability. The experimental results show that the low yield point steel has superior energy dissipation hysteretic capacity and can be applied to seismic structures. To overcome these deficiencies, a novel compound metal damper comprising both low yield point steel plates and common steel plates is presented. The optimization objectives, including "maximum rigidity" and "full stress state", are proposed to obtain the optimal edge shape of a compound metal damper. The numerical results show that the optimized composite metal damper has the advantages such as full hysteresis curve, uniform stress distribution, more sufficient energy consumption, and it can adjust the yield strength of the damper according to the engineering requirements. In view of the mechanical characteristics of the compound metal damper, the equivalent model of eccentric cross bracing is established, and the approximate analytical solution of the yield strength and the yield displacement is proposed. A nonlinear simulation analysis is carried out for the overall aseismic capacity of three-layer-frame structures with a compound metal damper. It is verified that a compound metal damper has better energy dissipation capacity and superior seismic performance, especially for a damper with double-objective optimized shape.

Seismic fragility assessment of steel moment-resisting frames equipped with superelastic viscous dampers

  • The superelastic viscous damper (SVD) is a hybrid passive control device comprising a viscoelastic damper and shape memory alloy (SMA) cables connected in series. The SVD is an innovative damper through which a large amount of seismic energy can dissipate. The current study assessed the seismic collapse induced by steel moment-resisting frames (SMRFs) equipped with SVDs and compared them with the performance of special MRFs and buckling restrained brace frames (BRBFs). For this purpose, nonlinear dynamic and incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) were conducted in OpenSees software. Both 5- and 9-story special MRFs, BRBFs, and MRFs equipped with the SVDs were examined. The results indicated that the annual exceedance rate for maximum residual drifts of 0.2% and 0.5% for the BRBFs and MRFs with SVDs, respectively, were considerably less than for SMRFs with reduced-beam section (RBS) connections and that the seismic performances of these structures were enhanced with the use of the BRB and SVD. The probability of collapse due to residual drift in the SVD, BRB, and RBS frames in the 9-story structure was 1.45, 1.75, and 1.05 times greater than for the 5-story frame.

Displacement Dependency and Capacity Evaluation According to the Cross-Sectional Shape and Aspect Ratio of Steel Rod Dampers (강봉댐퍼의 단면형상과 형상비에 따른 변위의존성 및 성능 평가)

  • In this study, the displacement dependence, strength, and energy dissipation capacity of the steel rod damper were evaluated. The test variables were cross-sectional shape and aspect ratio. The 6th test specimens were made for performance test. From the test results, it was evaluated that the displacement dependence conditions of design code were satisfied in all specimens. And the strength effect according to the cross-sectional shape was minimal. As a result, the strength and energy dissipation capacity of the aspect ratio of 13.7 were evaluated as excellent.

Serviceability-oriented analytical design of isolated liquid damper for the wind-induced vibration control of high-rise buildings

  • The effectiveness of conventional tuned liquid dampers (TLDs) in controlling the wind-induced response of tall flexible structures has been indicated. However, the impaired control effect in the detuning condition or a considerably high mass cost of liquid may be incurred in ensuring the high-level serviceability. To provide an efficient TLD-based solution for wind-induced vibration control, this study proposes a serviceability-oriented optimal design method for isolated TLDs (ILDs) and derives analytical design formulae. The ILD is implemented by mounting the TLD on the linear isolators. Stochastic response analysis is performed for the ILD-equipped structure subjected to stochastic wind and white noise, and the results are considered to derive the closed-form responses. Correspondingly, an extensive parametric analysis is conducted to clarify a serviceability-oriented optimal design framework by incorporating the comfort demand. The obtained results show that the high-level serviceability demand can be satisfied by the ILD based on the proposed optimal design framework. Analytical design formulae can be preliminarily adopted to ensure the target serviceability demand while enhancing the structural displacement performance to increase the safety level. Compared with conventional TLD systems, the ILD exhibits higher effectiveness and a larger frequency bandwidth for wind-induced vibration control at a small mass ratio.

Numerical and analytical investigation of cyclic behavior of D-Shape yielding damper

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the cyclic behavior of the D-shaped dampers (DSD). Similarly, at first, the numerical model was calibrated using the experimental sample. Then, parametric studies were conducted in order to investigate the effect of the radius and thickness of the damper on energy dissipation, effective and elastic stiffness, ultimate strength, and equivalent viscous damping ratio (EVDR). An analytical equation for the elastic stiffness of the DSD was also proposed, which showed good agreement with experimental results. Additionally, approximate equations were introduced to calculate the elastic and effective stiffness, ultimate strength, and energy dissipation. These equations were presented according to the curve fitting technique and based on numerical results. The results indicated that reducing the radius and increasing the thickness led to increased energy dissipation, effective stiffness, and ultimate strength of the damper. On the other hand, increasing the radius and thickness resulted in an increase in EVDR. Moreover, the ratio of effective stiffness to elastic stiffness also played a crucial role in increasing the EVDR. The thickness and radius of the damper were evaluated as the most effective dimensions for reducing energy dissipation and EVDR.

An experimental study on a steel multi-slit damper for seismic retrofit of soft-first story structures

  • In this research, the efficiency of a metallic energy dissipation device for seismic retrofit of an existing structure is evaluated by cyclic loading test. The proposed device, which is called multi-slit damper, is made of weak and strong slit dampers connected in series. Its energy dissipation mechanism consists of two stages: (i) yielding of the weak-slit damper under minor earthquakes; (ii) restraint of further deformations of the weak slit damper and activation of the strong slit damper under major earthquakes using a gap mechanism. A reinforced concrete (RC) frame with characteristics similar to soft-first-story structures is tested under cyclic loading before and after retrofit using the proposed device. The details of the experimental study are described and the test is simulated in an available commercial software to validate the analytical model of the damper. To further verify the applicability of the damper, it is applied to an analysis model of a 4-story structure with soft first story and its seismic performance is evaluated before and after retrofit. The experimental and analysis results show that the multi-slit damper is effective in controlling seismic response of structures.

Numerical and experimental behavior of moment concrete frame retrofitted with TADAS metal yielding damper under lateral loading

  • Since the cost of reconstruction is very high and the structure may have been damaged by an earthquake, we must retrofit the structure. Therefore, the importance of studying this issue is very high in order to achieve the desired resistance against the regulations. The present study involved the numerical and experimental analysis of nine concrete frames, consisting of three concrete frames, three concrete frames with bracing, and three concrete frames with a TADAS damper. The purpose of this study is to strengthen the damaged concrete frame using braces and TADAS dampers. Observations were made of the frames as they were subjected to controlled displacement. Also, ABAQUS software was used to compare numerical and experimental results. According to the results, the software was sufficiently capable of modeling the studied frames. Additionally, a parametric study was conducted on the thickness and number of bending plates. Thickness increases from 8 mm to 12 mm, 8 mm to 15 mm, and 8 mm to 20 mm, increasing the base shear by about 6.7%, 11.1%, and 25%, respectively. Furthermore, increasing the number of plates from 4 to 5, 4 to 6, and 4 to 7 increased base shears by about 4.5%, 8.4%, and 14%, respectively.

Performance based plastic design of friction damped RC building

  • As a supplemental energy dissipation device, friction dampers are widely employed to augment the behaviour of buildings under seismic forces. In the current work, a methodology for the design of the friction damping system of RC frame buildings is offered using performance-based plastic design (PBPD) method. Here 2% of maximum interstorey drift ratio for life safety (LS) level is taken into account as a target drift to estimate the design base shear. In this approach, the distribution of friction damper is determined based on the hysteretic energy demand of that storey. Two frames, five storey three bay (5S3B) and eight storey three bay (8S3B) RC frame building with and without friction damping systems are also taken up for the investigation. The suggested design approach is validated by the nonlinear time history analysis (NLTHA) procedure. Inter story drift ratio (ISDR) and storey displacement, which are the more closely related to structural damage during seismic excitation are evaluated. The results show that the friction damping system on a retrofitted RC frame building performs effectively under seismic excitations and that storey displacement and ISDR are within the limit at moderate and high seismic intensities.
