  • Seismic control performance of MR dampers, which have severe nonlinearity, varies with respect to the dynamic characteristics of an earthquake such as magnitude, frequency and duration. In this study, the effects of excitation characteristics on the equivalent linear system of a building structure with the MR damper are investigated through numerical analysis for artificial ground motions generated from different response spectrums. The equivalent damping ratio of the structure with the MR damper is calculated using Newmark and Hall's equations for ground motion amplification factors. It is found that the equivalent damping ratio of the structure with the MR damper is dependent on the ratio of the maximum friction force of the MR damper over excitation magnitude. Frequency contents of the earthquake ground motion affects the equivalent damping ratio of long-period structures considerably. Also, additional damping effect caused by interaction between the viscousity and friction of the MR damper is observed. Finally. response reduction factors for equivalent linear systems are proposed in order to improve accuracy in the prediction of the actual nonlinear response.

  • The Tuned Pendulum Slab Damper(TPSD)system is mainly composed of suspended pendulum slab which was hanging with cable wire from the top floor of building without any extra loads structurally, and can be helpful to reduce vibration with effect of tuned mass damper function by the principle of pendulum movement. The experiment was performed with miniatures of the 30stories of steel structure building by the forced vibration test using shaking table, and the result was reduced about 42% of vibration. The purpose of this study was to make analysis of application of the TPSD system to new building and exist building against strong wind or seismic wave. The result of this study was that the TPSD system shall be satisfactory in field of execution, process control, safety and economical efficiency with saving up to 70% of construction cost.

  • This paper presents yaw vibration control performances of railway vehicle featuring controllable magnetorheological damper. A cylindrical type of MR damper is devised and its damping force is evaluated by considering fluid resistance and MR effect. Design parameters are determined to achieve desired damping force level. The MR damper model is then incorporated with the governing equations of motion of the railway vehicle which includes vehicle body, bogie and wheel-set. Subsequently, computer simulation of vibration control via proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller is performed using Matlab. Various control performances are demonstrated under external excitation by creep force between wheel and rail.

  • To investigate the vibration characteristics of compact disc player(CDP) due to excited vibration and disturbances, it is necessary to consider the transmissibility of the CDP. The disturbances as well as the temperature in the vehicle are the one of the important factors when CDP is designed. In this study, the effect on the temperature of the oil damper, which is applied to anti-vibration system of the CDP, was investigated. When the temperature was changed from $-30^{\circ}C$ to $90^{\circ}C$ and the properties of the oil damper (hardness of rubber, viscosity of oil) were changed, the transmissibility was measured. When the damper rubber has the large hardness, the difference of the transmissibility and natural frequency due to temperature showed the remarkable change as compared with the those of damper viscosity.

  • As the structures become larger, higher and more complicated, the demand for safety level has increased. In recent years, TLD(Tuned Liquid Damper) proved to be a successful control tool for reducing structural vibrations. For this reason, the influence of some key parameters of the U-type TLD on the dynamic response is studied. And simple and effectively developed learning control logic is used to control vibration of U type Tuned Liquid Damper system. The purpose of this paper is design optimal control system to deal with unknown errors from non linearity and variation that cost modeling difficulty in complex structure and is followed with the desired behavior. Finally this hybrid control method applied to U type Tuned Liquid Damper structure gives the benefit from better performance of precision and stability of the structure by reducing vibration effect. This research leads to safety design in various structure to robust unspecified foreign disturbances such as windy-load and earthquake.
