A control algorithm combining viscous and non-linear Reid damping mechanisms has been recently proposed by the authors to command active friction dampers. In this paper, friction dampers and the proposed algorithm are applied to control the seismic responses of a nonlinear 20-story building. Piezoelectric stack actuators are used to implement the control algorithm. The capacity of each damper is determined by the practical size of piezoelectric actuators and the availability of power supply. The saturation effect of the actuators on the building responses is investigated. To minimize the peak story drift ratio or floor acceleration of the building structure, a practical sequential procedure is developed to sub-optimally place the dampers on various floors. The effectiveness of active friction dampers and the efficiency of the proposed sequential procedure are verified by subjecting the building structure to four earthquakes of various intensities. The performance of 80 dampers and 137 dampers installed on the structure is evaluated according to 5 criteria. Numerical simulations indicated that the proposed control algorithm effectively reduces the seismic responses of the uncontrolled 20-story building, such as inelastic deformation. The sub-optimal placement of dampers based on peak acceleration outperforms that based on peak drift ratio for structures subjected to near-fault ground motions. Saturation of piezoelectric actuators has adverse effect on floor acceleration.

In general, pulsation damper is installed in fuel rail for conventional MPI engine to decrease undesirable noise in vehicle cabin room. However, pulsation damper is so expensive that there are prevailing studies to reduce fuel pressure pulsations with integrated damping effect. This paper is one of basic studies for development of fuel rail to abate pulsations with self-damping effect. Primarily, the pressure pulsation characteristics was investigated with aspect ratio of cross section, wall thickness, and materials of fuel rail. A high aspect ratio or thin wall was found to absorb the pressure pulsations effectively. But volume effects on the fuel pressure pulsation reductions were not especially significant than cross section effects because volume increment rate is larger than pressure pulsation reduction rate. The fuel rail made of aluminum is effective for reduction of pressure pulsation than that of low-carbon steel. Pressure change period increases on the basis of same lengths of supply line and fuel rail as the volume is enlarged and/or the thickness of wall is thinned.
Recently, Since buildings are bigger and higher, the damage of human life can be increased by fire flame and smoke in fire. Smoke control system is necessary to decrease this damage. Therefore, Air supply pressurization smoke control system is applied to vestibule of escape stairway. NFSC requires pressure differential of above 40 Pa, but pressure differential is excessively overpressure in the field. It is known that the cause of this over pressure differential is much leakage of damper. Over pressure differential can bad effect to escaper by pressurizing the door. Analyze the real leakage of damper by increasing the number of dampers operation for identifying this problems. The result of testing, the leakage has difference between new dampers and increased the number of operation dampers. As the static preassure increase, the leakage difference increase. Comparison with preceding study, this result has similar linear tendency.
This study proposes a dynamic reliability analysis of control system as a method of quantitative evaluation of its performance in probabilistic terms. In this dynamic reliability analysis, the failure event is defined as an event that the dynamic response of the structural system exceeds a displacement limit, whereas the conventional reliability analysis method has limitations that do not properly assess the actual time history response of the structure subjected to dynamic loads, such as earthquakes and high winds, by taking the static response into account in the failure event. In this first paper, we discuss the control effect of the viscous damper on the seismic performance of the member-level failure where the failure event of the structural member consists of the union set of time-sequential member failures during the earthquake excitations and the failure probability of the earthquake-excited structural member is computed using system reliability approach to consider the statistical dependence of member failures between the subsequent time points. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed approach can present a reliable assessment of the control performance of the viscous damper system in comparison with MCS method. The most important advantage of the proposed approach can provide us more accurate estimate of failure probability of the structural control system by using the actual time-history responses obtained by dynamic response analysis.

In this study, a simplified design procedure for friction dampers of a multi-story structure in order to reduce seismic response is proposed. To get insight for control effect of the structure with friction dampers is difficult, because of a nonlinear characteristic by a friction damper. Since a control force of a friction damper is influenced by coupling velocity between floors, adjoining modes are coupled. Thus structural response are derived by assuming steady-state response in resonance. As it is impossible that an exact solution is obtained for seismic load, first, a closed form solution can be achieved under harmonic vibration. Second, to convert a three-story building into a single-degree-of-freedom(SDOF) structure, modal analysis is performed. Third, an equivalent damping ratio is derived with utilizing closed form solution. And response reducing factor is proposed by it. Finally, friction force of a damper is designed for using response reducing factor, and then designed dampers are verified for seven seismic data. The nonlinear analysis results confirm the validity of the proposed procedure.
This study proposes a new shape memory alloy-tuned mass damper (SMA-TMD) and investigates the effectiveness of this damper in reducing and controlling the vibrations of a transmission tower-line system under various seismic excitations. Based on a practical transmission line system and considering the geometric nonlinearity of this system, the finite element (FE) software ANSYS is used to create an FE model of the transmission tower-line system and simulate the proposed SMA-TMD. Additionally, the parameters of the SMA springs are optimized. The effectiveness of a conventional TMD and the proposed SMA-TMD in reducing and controlling the vibrations of the transmission tower-line system under seismic excitations is investigated. Moreover, the effects of the ground motion intensity and frequency ratio on the reduction ratio (η) of the SMA-TMD are studied. The vibration reduction effect of the SMA-TMD under various seismic excitations is superior to that of the conventional TMD. Changes in the ground motion intensity and frequency ratio have a significant impact on the η of the SMA-TMD. As the ground motion intensity and frequency ratio increase, the η values of the SMA-TMD first increase and then decrease. Studying the vibration reduction effects of the SMA-TMD can provide a reference for the practical engineering application of this damper.
This study describes the tail vibration reduction for the next generation high speed EMU(HEMU-430X). The model of 6 cars was generated and the calculation was performed using VAMPIRE(railway vehicle dynamic software). In view of ride characteristics, HEMU-430X was expected to sway at the tail because of the yaw damper direction. The lateral acceleration of vehicle body exceeded the criteria because of hunting. To reduce this hunting motion, some methods such as wheel profile change, the change of damping coefficient for the 2nd lateral damper, the damping coefficient change of yaw damper were tested, but had little effect. Finally, the yaw damper direction was changed and the tail vibration disappeared. In real running test, the tail vibration appeared at the speed of 150km/h and the yaw damper direction change made the vehicle stable at the speed of 300km/h. The maximum test speed of HEMU-430X is 430km/h. If the tail vibration appears at higher speed, some other methods in this study may be considered to reduce it.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to improve the irregularity of the stress-strain curve and to ensure accuracy when calculating the damping effect by preventing members from moving in the off-plane direction due to eccentricity when loads are applied. Method: The specifications of the steel strips used in this study are the same, but the curvature of the strips to constitute each damper is different. Each steel strip with different curvature was arranged in an triangle, three dampers with different curvature were made, and repeated load tests were conducted, and the amount of energy dissipation was calculated to measure the performance of the damper. Result: The amount of energy dissipation significantly decreases compared to the case where there is no initial curvature, and the change in the test energy dissipation amount according to the size of the curvature is not large, and the presence or absence of the hyperbolic rate is considered an important variable. Conclusion: The period is about 78.7% longer from T=0.3 to T=0.536sec, and the response spectrum acceleration is reduced from Sa=0.54g to Sa=0.229g, so the damping effect of the damper is sufficient.
Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) was applied to control the vibration of an offshore structure due to ocean waves. The errors caused by the linearization of the fluid-structure interaction effect and the phenomena when using the linearized equation of motion in TMD design were analyzed. To determine the performance of TMD in controlling vibration, both regular waves with varying periods and irregular waves with different significant wave heights were used. When the offshore structure received regular waves with a period similar to the first natural period of structure. TMD performed well in terms of response reduction. Such was not the case for the other periods. however, In the case of irregular waves, TMD triggered the reduction of structural response for waves with relatively small significant wave height. For irregular waves with relatively big significant wave height, however, TMD did not show any control effect. Therefore, TMD is useful in reducing offshore structural vibration due to ambient waves, thereby helping secure fatigue life.

In this study the effect and applicability of viscoelastic dampers on the seismic reinforcement of steel framed structures are investigated in the context of the performance based design approach. The effect of the damper on dissipating the input seismic energy was investigated with a single degree of freedom system. For analysis models a five-story steel frame subjected to gravity load, a ten-story and twenty-story structure subjected to gravity and wind load were designed. The code-specified design spectrums were constructed for each soil type and performance objective, and artificial ground excitation records to be used in the nonlinear time history analysis were generated based on the design spectrums. Inter-story drift was adopted as the primary performance criterion. According to the analysis results, all model structures turned out to satisfy the performance level for most of the soil conditions except for the soft soil(operational level). It was also found that the seismic performance could be greatly enhanced, and the structures were led to behave elastically by installing viscoelastic dampers on appropriate locations.
