Typical probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) results were used to estimate the performance indicator (PI) thresholds of unplanned reactor scram (URS) and safety system unavailability (SSU) for Korean nuclear power plants (NPPs). The changes in core damage frequency (${\Delta}$CDFs) of $10^{-6}/yr$, $10^{-5}/yr$, and $10^{-4}/yr$ were adopted as the risk criteria in setting up the PI thresholds. The PI thresholds for the URS were estimated using information pertaining to the initiating event frequencies, the CDF, and the CDF contribution of each initiating event. The PI thresholds of the SSU were estimated using information on the unavailability, the Fussell-Vesely importance, and the CDF.
Although various methods for determination of damage threshold in rock have been suggested, clear damage thresholds were determined by some methods, but different thresholds were measured by other methods. We determined the damage thresholds in Hangdeung granite using all the methods suggested, and investigated the best methods, applicability and errors of each method. The crack initiation threshold and the crack damage threshold which are important in investigation of characteristics of crack development and failure were verified by field strength ratio method and long-term constant load test. The crack closure stress and the crack initiation stress were 57.5 MPa and 77.6 MPa, and the most exact values were yielded by crack volumetric strain. The secondary crack initiation stress was 90.6 MPa and AE event count and AE event count rate were the effective methods. The volumetric stiffness, AE event count and AE event count rate were the most effective methods for determination of crack coalescence threshold and crack coalescence stress was 110.3 MPa. The crack damage stress was 127.5 MPa and was measured correctly by volumetric stiffness and AE event count rate. The ratio between crack initiation stress and uniaxial compressive strength was 0.47 which was very similar with the FSR value of 0.46. The ratio between crack damage stress and uniaxial compressive strength was almost the same as the ratio between long-term strength and uniaxial compressive strength, indicating that the crack initiation stress and the crack damage stress measured were correct.
Progressing from weather forecasts and warnings to multi-hazard impact-based forecast and warning services represents a paradigm shift in service delivery. Urban flooding is a typical meteorological disaster. This study proposes support plan for urban flooding impact-based forecast by providing inundation risk matrix. To achieve this goal, we first configured storm sewer management model (SWMM) to analyze 1D pipe networks and then grid based inundation analysis model (GIAM) to analyze 2D inundation depth over the Gangnam drainage area with $7.4km^2$. The accuracy of the simulated inundation results for heavy rainfall in 2010 and 2011 are 0.61 and 0.57 in POD index, respectively. 20 inundation scenarios responding on rainfall scenarios with 10~200 mm interval are produced for 60 and 120 minutes of rainfall duration. When the inundation damage thresholds are defined as pre-occurrence stage, occurrence stage to $0.01km^2$, 0.01 to $0.1km^2$, and $0.1km^2$ or more in area with a depth of 0.5 m or more, rainfall thresholds responding on each inundation damage threshold results in: 0 to 20 mm, 20 to 50 mm, 50 to 80 mm, and 80 mm or more in the rainfall duration 60 minutes and 0 to 30 mm, 30 to 70 mm, 70 to 110 mm, and 110 mm or more in the rainfall duration 120 minutes. Rainfall thresholds as a trigger of urban inundation damage can be used to form an inundation risk matrix. It is expected to be used for urban flood impact forecasting.
In this paper, a pulsed picosecond laser dressing method for bronze-bonded diamond wheel is studied systematically and comprehensively. The picosecond laser pulse ablation experiment is carried out, and the ablation thresholds of bronze-bonded and diamond abrasive particle are measured respectively. The results indicate that the single-pulse ablation thresholds of bronze-bonded are 0.89J/cm2, 0.24J/cm2 during strong/weak ablation stages. And the multi-pulse ablation thresholds of diamond abrasive particle are 1.69J/cm2, 0.49J/cm2 during strong/weak ablation stages. Obviously, diamond grains have less thermal damage during the process of gentle ablation. The diamond grains of the grinding wheel surface are graphitized during laser dressing. The bronze-bonded is relatively smooth and organizational stability, and the diamond grits have suitable prominent height, which are beneficial to maintain the good grinding performance of dressed bronze-bonded diamond grinding wheels.
In highly stressed conditions, the excavation damage zone induced by stress redistribution and disturbance must be evaluated after tunnel excavation. Therefore, the investigation of stress-induced deformation and fracture in rock is indispensable. In this study, fracture and damage mechanisms of rock induced by the accumulation of microcracks were investigated by the moving point regression technique as well as acoustic emission measured during uniaxial compression tests. Especially, the modified procedures to determine damage thresholds more systematically were newly proposed, and successfully applied to rock. From experiments, crack initiation and track damage stress levels were estimated to be $33{\~}36\%$ and $84{\~}89\%$ of uniaxial compressive strength respectively, for both of Hwangdeung granite and Yeosan marble. However, the normalized crack closure stress level for Yeosan marble was much higher than for Hwangdeung granite. In addition, the largest proportion of total axial strain in Hwangdeung granite was attributable to elastic deformation and initial microcracking. However, the greatest part of axial deformation in Yeosan marble arose from initial crack closure and unstable cracking. Finally, it was seen that unstable cracking after the crack damage stress level played a key part in the lateral deformation in rocks under uniaxial compression.
The quantitative risk assessment methods for thermal failure in targets were studied using fire modeling. To this end, Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), as a representative fire model, was used and the probabilities related to thermal damage to an electrical cable were evaluated according to the change in fire area inside a specific compartment. 'The maximum probability of exceeding the damage thresholds' adopted in a conservative point of view and 'the probability of failure' including the time to damage were compared. The probability of failure suggested in the present study could evaluate the quantitative fire risk more realistically, compared to the maximum probability of exceeding the damage thresholds with the assumption that thermal damage occurred the instant the target reached its minimum failure criteria in terms of the surface temperature and heat flux.
Every year, particularly during the monsoon rainy season, landslides at the Chuncheon province of South Korea cause tremendous damage to lives, properties, and infrastructures. More so, the high rainfall intensity and long rainfall days that occurred in 2020 have increased the water content in the soil, thereby increasing the chances of landslide occurrences. Besides this, the rainfall thresholds and characteristics responsible for the initiation of landslides in this region have not been properly identified. Therefore, this paper addresses the rainfall thresholds responsible for the initiation of landslides at Chuncheon from a regional perspective. Using data obtained from rainfall measurements taken from 2002 to 2011, we identify a threshold relationship between rainfall intensity and rainfall duration for the initiation of landslides. In addition, we identify the relationship between the rainfall intensity using a 3-day, 7-day, and 10-day antecedent rainfall observation. Specifically, we estimate the rainfall data at 8 sites where debris flow occurred in 2011 by kriging. Following this, the estimated data are used to construct the relationship between the intensity (I), duration (D), and frequency (F) of rainfall. The results of the intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) analysis show that landslides will occur under a rainfall frequency below a 2-year return period at two areas in Chuncheon. These results will be effectively used to design structures that can prevent the occurrence of landslides in the future.

EOIS(electro-optical imaging system) is the main target of the laser weapon. Specially, the image sensor will be vulnerable because EOIS focuses the incident laser beam onto the image sensor. Accordingly, the laser-induced damage of the image sensor needs to be identified for the counter-measure against the laser attack. In this study, the laser-induced damage of the CCD image sensor irradiated by the CW(continuous wave) NIR(near infrared) laser was experimentally investigated and mechanisms of those damage occurrences were analyzed. In the experiment, the near infrared CW fiber laser was used as a laser source. As the fluence, which is the product of the irradiance and the irradiation time, increased, the permanent damages such as discoloration and breakdown appeared sequentially. The discoloration occurred when the color filter was damaged and then the breakdown occurred when the photodiode and substrate were damaged. From the experimental results, LIDTs(laser-induced damage thresholds) of damages were roughly determined.
Based on damage accumulation of multi-grid composite walls, a method of dynamic reliability estimations is proposed. The multi-grid composite wall is composed of edge frame beam, edge frame columns, grid beams, grid columns and filling blocks. The equations including stiffness, shear forces at filling blocks cracking and multi-grid composite walls yielding, ultimate displacement, and damage index are obtained through tests of 13 multi-grid composite wall specimens. Employing these equations in reliability calculations, procedures of dynamic reliability estimations based on damage accumulation of multi-grid composite walls subjected to random earthquake excitations are proposed. Finally the proposed method is applied to the typical composite wall specimen subjected to random earthquake excitations which can be specified by a finite number of input random variables. The dynamic reliability estimates, when filling blocks crack under earthquakes corresponding to 63% exceedance in 50 years and when the composite wall reach limit state under earthquakes corresponding to 2-3% exceedance in 50 years, are obtained using the proposed method by taking damage indexes as thresholds. The results from the proposed method which show good agreement with those from Monte-Carlo simulations demonstrate the proposed method is effective.
Structural damage identification (SDI) is a crucial step in structural health monitoring. However, some of the existing SDI methods cannot provide enough identification accuracy and efficiency in practice. A novel whale optimization algorithm (WOA) based method is proposed for SDI by weighting modal data and flexibility assurance criterion in this study. At first, the SDI problem is mathematically converted into a constrained optimization problem. Unlike traditional objective function defined using frequencies and mode shapes, a new objective function on the SDI problem is formulated by weighting both modal data and flexibility assurance criterion. Then, the WOA method, due to its good performance of fast convergence and global searching ability, is adopted to provide an accurate solution to the SDI problem, different predator mechanisms are formulated and their probability thresholds are selected. Finally, the performance of the proposed method is assessed by numerical simulations on a simply-supported beam and a 31-bar truss structures. For the given multiple structural damage conditions under environmental noises, the WOA-based SDI method can effectively locate structural damages and accurately estimate severities of damages. Compared with other optimization methods, such as particle swarm optimization and dragonfly algorithm, the proposed WOA-based method outperforms in accuracy and efficiency, which can provide a more effective and potential tool for the SDI problem.
